Sophie Bennett stepped out of the taxi and gazed up at New York City's magnificent skyline. The buzz of ambition and limitless potential filled the air, making it electrifying. She had grown up in this city, where she had dreamed of a life much better than the one she had experienced. She had been studying overseas and pursuing her love of painting for five years when she returned.
Sophie, both excited and frightened, inhaled deeply as she clutched her portfolio against her chest. The city of New York has changed since she left. It all seemed brighter, faster, and larger. Both she and the world had moved on. The sound of cabs blaring muffled her voice as she mumbled to herself, "Welcome back, Sophie." and the chatter of passersby.
James, her brother, had insisted on hosting a welcome-back dinner at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the city. At first, Sophie was apprehensive because James's ideal of a laid-back meal typically featured pricey wine, five-star restaurants, and people she hardly knew, but she felt powerless to turn him no. James had, after all, always been her pillar of support, particularly following their parents' financial downfall almost ten years before.
Sophie's breath caught as she walked into the darkened restaurant. The room exuded grandeur, with golden accents, crystal chandeliers, and an aura of exclusivity that made her feel uncomfortable in her plain black outfit.
"Over here!" James waved from a private table in the corner. He was all smiles, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit that screamed success. But Sophie barely noticed him.
Sitting across from her brother was Lucas Vance.
Her heart stuttered, and the air seemed to leave the room. Lucas Vance. The name alone carried weight. He was a tech tycoon who had built empires out of startups and was one of the city's most influential billionaires. However, Lucas was a quite different matter to Sophie. He had been a constant in her life for as long as she could remember, was her brother's best friend, and had once, though he was unaware of it, broken her heart.
Lucas's sharp blue eyes met hers as he raised his head. The world around them briefly became hazy. Even with the subtle simplicity of his navy suit, his tall form demanded attention as he stood up from his chair.
His deep voice sent an uncontrollable chill down her spine as he said, "Sophie." "It's been a long time."
In the hopes that he wouldn't notice the impact he still had on her, she forced a grin. "Lucas. It's nice to meet you.
Before she could accept Lucas's hand, James pulled her into a bear hug, relieving the tension.
"Look at you! James taunted, ruffling her hair as he used to when they were little, "My baby sister is all grown up."
"Stop it!" Sophie swatted his hand away, laughing. Her eyes, however, strayed back to Lucas, who was observing her with an enigmatic look.
As the evening wore on, Sophie made an effort to concentrate on James's enthusiastic tales of his most recent business endeavors, but she couldn't get rid of the sensation that Lucas was watching her. His typical charisma was subdued, and he was quieter than she remembered. by something deeper, something she couldn't quite put her finger on.
"So, Sophie," Lucas said suddenly, his voice cutting through James's rambling. "What's next for you? Are you planning to stay in New York?"
Sophie hesitated. "That's the plan. I'm hoping to get my art career off the ground, but..." She trailed off, feeling the weight of her uncertainty.
Lucas leaned forward, his gaze steady. "You'll succeed. I have no doubt about that."
Her cheeks flushed under his intensity. "Thanks, but it's not that simple."
"Nothing worthwhile ever is," he replied, his voice softer now.
Before Sophie could respond, James clapped his hands. "Alright, enough shop talk. Let's celebrate!"
Even though the evening was filled with good wine and laughing, Sophie couldn't get rid of the suspicion that Lucas was concealing something. Although he was kind and attractive, there was a tenseness in his jaw and a hint of guardedness in his eyes.
