As the wedding approached, I stumbled upon a post from my boyfriend on Twitter.
"The betrothal gift I presented to her amounted to $28, 000. Now, suppose she experiences a miscarriage at the sixth month of her pregnancy. In such a case, would I be entitled to request the return of that betrothal gift? "
After receiving a flood of praise from his male followers, he became conceited.
"I've fucked her for countless times, who else would take her now? Once she has a child, she will become more vulnerable and easier to control."
I saved the screenshots and decisively blocked him.
When he saw my flat stomach, his face turned pale. "What happened to our baby?"
1.
Two years into my relationship with Jonny Greyson, I got pregnant.
Our parents both thought it was about time to meet.
To make a good impression on Jonny's parents, I spent the morning with my parents at the mall, buying the best cigarettes and wine, and even picked out a silk scarf for Kate.
I was full of anticipation for the upcoming meeting.
To my surprise, when our family arrived at the private room, it was already filled with people.
As I opened the door, the pungent smell of smoke hit me, making me feel nauseous.
Angrily, I grabbed a waiter and questioned, "Why did you give away the room I reserved?"
"We didn't. The people who came were with Mr. Greyson."
Jonny rushed over from the dining table, complaining before I could speak, "Why are you so late? We couldn't wait and started eating."
Hearing this, my parents' faces darkened.
My father Jerry Patel said sternly, "Since we're not welcome, let's discuss this another day."
Seeing Jerry about to leave with me, Jonny panicked and quickly apologized with a forced smile.
"I didn't mean it that way. It's my fault for the offensive words that upset you. Please, have a seat. My parents have been waiting for a long time."
As soon as I sat down, the smoke from the table made me dizzy, and I couldn't help but retch.
Jonny looked displeased at the man smoking. "Dad, Mary is pregnant. The smoke is making her sick."
His father Mike snuffed out the cigarette, muttering, "Tsk, highborn lady, isn't she?"
"Let's eat something first. You must be tired from the journey," Jonny's mother Kate warmly invited.
My mother Cerci Patel raised her eyebrows slightly, looking at her without speaking.
"We're not here merely for the meal. Our main purpose is to discuss the financial support for the newlyweds. The amount we previously mentioned was $100, 000. Have you considered it?" Jerry asked directly.
Kate's face stiffened, and she glanced at Jonny, saying, "Jonny might not have told you about our family's situation. His father and I are just ordinary farmers. The amount is indeed... a bit much. Could we lower it a bit? Weddings are about good blessing, aren't they?"
Cerci, holding back her anger, asked, "Then how much do you suggest?"
"How about," Kate held up two fingers, smiling, "seventy thousand? Both numbers—seven and zero—are considered holy and blessed."
I pursed my lips, looking at Jonny, who remained silent, and asked, "Is this your mother's opinion or yours?"
2.
He looked up at me, hesitating to speak, his eyes seemingly blaming me for being unreasonable.
Noticing the tension, Kate tried to smooth things over, "Oh, it's not that we can't afford your proposed number. We just renovated the house, so money is tight. Eventually, the money will be for the young couple, right? Isn't the baby the most important thing now?"
I chuckled softly, "Maybe not. If I can't offer our child the basic guarantee, I will possibly abort the pregnancy."
The smile vanished from Kate's face, and she drummed her fingers on the table impatiently, continuing, "Let's each think about it."
Back home, seeing my parents' concerned eyes, I forced a smile and said, "It's okay, I can handle it."
Curled up in bed, I scrolled through Jonny's social media, unable to hold back my tears.
I dialed his number, and he picked up immediately.
His voice came through the receiver.
"Mary, I'm sorry for what happened today, but you know our family's situation. My parents are old, and I can't let them sell everything for my wedding. Please understand them. It's not easy for them to raise me..."
"Jonny!" I tried to calm my emotions, "Is it because of me that your parents have it hard? Shouldn't you take some responsibility?"
"Stop being so mean. I've only been working for a few years and haven't earned much. If you're willing to wait, I'll save up and marry you."
I laughed coldly, "Have you forgotten that it was my father who helped you get your job?"
After I exposed him, he became defiant, "So what? Everything I have now is because of my own efforts. Even without your father, I wouldn't be worse off! Your family looks down on me, always condescending. Do you know how humiliating that is for me? Why can't you understand..."
I interrupted him, "Stop flattering yourself. Without my father, you'd still be working on the assembly line. I chose you because you were hardworking and ambitious, never complaining about your background. You promised to be faithful after marriage, but look at you now. It's disgusting!"
Before he could respond, I continued, "Since you despise my family's help so much, I'll have Mr. Watson approve your resignation tomorrow. Go back to where you came from!"
I hung up the phone without hesitation.
3.
He and Kate had booked the room early, waiting for us to arrive.
The third day, "Oh, Mary, you're here," Kate greeted warmly, holding my hand as I entered. "Last time was all a misunderstanding."
"So, Kate, are you prepared with the money this time?" I asked directly.
Kate paused for a moment, then smiled as she looked behind me. "Let's not talk about that. Where are your parents? We can discuss things when they arrive."
I smiled back at her. "My parents aren't feeling well, so it's just me today. If there's anything you want to say, please feel free."
Kate frowned, her lips curling into a disdainful sneer.
"Well, I won't beat around the bush. We don't have much money, but we do have a house. His uncle has already cleared out his place for you two to use as a wedding home. You're already expecting, and it's important to marry soon for appearances. It might not affect Jonny, but your reputation will suffer..."
I looked at Jonny with a smile. "Jonny, did you forget to mention what I said to your mom yesterday? Why don't you chat with her for a bit, and we can talk later."
With that, I gave his shoulder a firm pat.
