After I Die

My mom pointed at me and yelled with fury. "If I'd known I'd give birth to someone as heartless as you, I should've strangled you at birth!"

Kimberly hid behind my mom. "Karlee, you took my cake. Why did you still hit me? Do you hate me that much?"

She looked innocent, as if she'd been deeply wronged, questioning me with a pitiful tone.

My dad overheard and pulled Kimberly into a comforting hug. He glanced at me, his expression unreadable.

Blood trickled down from the corner of my mouth.

They didn't know I hadn't stolen anything. Kimberly had offered me the cake herself.

Ever since Kimberly told my mom that eating vegetarian meals and drinking plain porridge would bring blessings, my three daily meals turned into watery gruel.

While they ate, I stood to the side, swallowing hard.

The constant hunger made my eyes light up when I saw the cake in Kimberly's hand.

Maybe my gaze was too intense. Kimberly deliberately held the cake out to me. "Go on, eat it. Consider it charity."
