"Anne, we need you in ward A14," Callie called out to Anne, who was taking off her uniform. Her shift had ended, and she was about to head to Frank's family dinner.
"I thought I was done for the day?" Anne asked.
"Doctor Williams needs you there," Callie explained before leaving the changing room.
Anne sighed, lightly tapping her head. She put her uniform back on.
"I need to call Frank and let him know I'll be late," she said to herself. She took out her phone and dialed his number.
"Hello?" Frank answered on the first ring.
"Hey, Frank, I'm sorry but I won't make it on time. An emergency came up, so I'll be late," Anne explained.
"It's okay, Anne," Frank replied with a sigh. "I'll call Mom and let her know. We'll reschedule everything."
"Thanks, hun," Anne said, preparing to hang up.
"Wait," Frank said before she could. "You didn't tell me you love me or call me by my sweet name."
Anne smiled. "Okay, I love you, my sugar fairy."
"I love you too, my fairy angel," Frank replied. Anne kissed the phone and hung up, putting it back in her bag. She then headed to the ward to check on the emergency. When she arrived, the door was slightly open.
"Doctor Williams?" she called out.
"Come in, Anne," the doctor said, not turning around from the patient.
Anne stepped in and closed the door behind her.
"Mr. Salvador, how are you doing?" she asked the patient, who gave a weak smile. She sat down next to him.
"Anne, Mr. Salvador has something to tell you," Doctor Williams said.
Mr. Salvador looked at her seriously. "Anne, I believe you know about my condition?"
She nodded. "Yes, I do."
"I've been in this hospital for a few days now, and every day you've checked on me. I appreciate it," he said with a strained smile. Anne knew something wasn't right.
"So, sir, how can I help you?" she asked cautiously.
He looked her straight in the eye. "Anne, I want to have a child with you."
Anne froze. "Is that a joke?" she asked, uneasy.
He climbed off the bed and knelt in front of her, surprising her even more. This wasn't a man who begged for anything, but today he was desperate.
"Anne, you need to understand how important this is to me," he pleaded. "I have no family, and I need a bone marrow transplant. The only way to do it is to have a blood relative, but I don't have any. I have less than a year to live. I'm only 28, and I've spent my life building my career. I've made money, but I have no one left except my foster mother in Alaska. Please, I'll compensate you well. Just help me."
Anne was still in shock. She glanced at Doctor Williams, but he avoided her gaze. Then she turned back to Mr. Salvador.
"I... I need time to think about this," she said, her voice shaky. She stood up and left the room.
Outside the hospital, Anne got into her car and drove to Frank's house. It was almost seven when she arrived. She parked and walked to the gate.
"Who's there?" Sandro, the security guard, asked.
"It's me, Anne," she replied softly. Sandro opened the gate, and she walked inside.
She could hear laughter from the living room as she entered the house. But when she stepped in, she saw Frank and a blonde woman kissing on the couch. They didn't notice her standing there, and she watched for a full five minutes as they continued.
"Frank!" Anne finally shouted.
They stopped, and Frank looked up, shocked to see her. He hadn't expected her to be back so soon.
"Baby, who's she?" the blonde woman asked, still clinging to Frank.
Frank pushed her off and stood up, adjusting his pants as he walked toward Anne. Without saying a word, Anne took off her ring and threw it at him, then rushed out of the room.
She went straight to her car, drove home, and collapsed on her bed, crying into her pillow. Soon, she heard a knock at the door.
"Anne, please listen to me," Frank's voice called from outside.
She didn't move. Neighbors who knew about her relationship with Frank gathered outside, but she stayed in her room, letting the tears flow until she eventually fell asleep.
The next morning, Anne got ready for work, had her coffee, and stepped outside. To her surprise, Frank was waiting on her doorstep.
She quietly closed the door behind her and began walking to her car.
"Anne!" Frank called out.
"I'm so sorry for what happened yesterday," he said, but she didn't turn around or say anything. She got in her car and drove off, leaving him standing there.
