Chapter 1 Circumstance

Don Carlo Du Vanguard sat in his room, a cigarette in between his lips. He had been pacing the room for hours, and the result was perspiration on his brow and his shirt sticking to his back despite the air conditioner that was on in his room.

He was afraid. He was scared because he knew.

He knew that he had offended Don Sebastian by asking a few of his men that had crossed into his territory by mistake to lie down and be stripped of their clothes a few days ago.

He had also ordered that they be beaten and their money collected from them and brought to him. Even though he knew that Don Sebastian was a person who didn't care when it came to war, he also wanted to show his rival that he didn't care.

The men had told him that the money had been given to them by Don to purchase some goods, but he had been adamant. He wanted to show Don Sebastian that his territory wasn't to be trampled upon. He wanted to show him that he was also a crazy warlord and Mafia Lord.

But at that moment, Don Carlo knew that he was afraid.

And that was why he had told his men to maintain positions across the yard where they could easily pick off their enemies. That was why he had made sure that his daughter and his son, his wife included, were inside their rooms, safe and away from where the fighting would hit.

That was why he was in his room, his Ak47 rifle on the bed. That was why he was waiting, his heat hammering in his chest, his pulse increasing by the second. He had been waiting for hours, and he knew that very soon, he wouldn't have to wait anymore.

Don Carlo was a man that was known for his possession of extensive weapons. Anybody that went to war with him came out testifying that he was a freak and he possessed the best weapons when it came to war. They also said he was a man that loved the sight of blood.

Don Carlo smiled, knowing that today was the day he was either going to confirm or debunk all those rumors. Today was that day.

When he heard the rumble of the trucks, the hammering of his chest increased. He stared, squinting at the dust that gathered because of the swift movement of the approaching trucks.

And that was why when it happened, he didn't see it.

He heard it.

The explosion rocked the entire compound that belonged to Don Carlo, throwing him off his feet and against the wall. Instantly, he reached for his gun, fear in his every movement.

At that moment, the shooting began, and Don Carlo found out that maybe he wasn't made for war after all. He hardly fought. Most of the time, it was his men that fought, and they did it outside his compound, maybe in the town or in the vast forests. But he had brought war to his household, and he was going to face the music whether he liked it or not.

When Don Sebastian had sent him letters demanding his money and payment for the disgrace of his men, he had torn and burnt the letters, recording them and sending them as videos to his rival. He had been laughing all through, knowing that he wanted war, and he was going to get it.

His main aim of fighting Don Sebastian was because he wanted the two territories to belong to him. Two territories belonging to him meant not only was his business going to flourish, the drug business he did underground was going to go smoothly because he was going to be controlling two platoons.

There were a lot of advantages. There was the advantage of him becoming the most feared man in the area, and not having anybody to oppose him. That was why he had done it.

That was why Don Carlo had risked not only his life, but the life of his family members, his servants and his men as well. He was going to war without caring about the consequences, and he didn't want to care one bit as far as he got what he wanted.

The wails of his men brought him out of his reverie and back to the present, telling him that Sebastian's men were slowly gaining the upper hand. He peeked through the window blinds, his gun by his side.

There were three trucks, and he could see a few dead bodies already around the truck.

His phone rang, the shrill sound the only different sound apart from the sounds of bullets that rented the air.

It was his deputy and the leader of his men, the most feared man after him in his territory, Julian Santos.

"We need backup, Don."

His deputy was talking from a burner phone, and even though he was outside in the heat of the battle and just a few feet away, his voice was cracking due to static that was normally associated with burner phones.

"What's the situation?"

Don Carlo peeked out of the window once again, happy to see that there were a few more dead bodies across the other trucks too.

"We're catching them from our hidden positions. But we need some men to push them out of the compound. If we can do that, we'll get them to retreat. We need numbers, sir."

Ending the call, Don Carlo found his way into his sitting room, running down the stairs of the huge Carlo mansion. There, he found a group of his men huddled in a corner, their guns at the ready. It was his plan to make sure that he had backup no matter the circumstances, and this was why he had positioned these men where they were.

"Move, all of you. You're going to attack by surprise, and use your grenades too. Come on now, move!"

The door opened and the dozen men poured out of the house.

When he heard the sounds of "retreat!" from Don Sebastian's men a few minutes later, he knew that he had won the war, even if it was just temporary.
