Chapter 1 Fired

A grating alarm went off across the room, so loud it nearly broke her eardrum. Dunn swung her left hand angrily, slamming it into the alarm and seriously damaging it.

With bags under her eyes, she mouthed, "A blissful morning to get late," as she got out of bed.

"I shouldn't have started that drama, now I'm doomed for not being able to sleep" When she realized that today was the general meeting with the higher-ups, her whining continued.

"What the.." She cried out and bolted into the bathroom. This girl woke up at eight thirty am and is expected to resume by nine am, so she will not be spending the twenty to thirty minutes that a normal girl would spend in the restroom.

She spent an additional minute after taking a shower because she nearly forgot to brush her teeth. She cast a glance in her closet in search of an understated yet elegant dress.

She was still grumpy at the thought of the big meeting with the superiors today. With a sigh, Dunn chose a corporate teal gown that fit her well-it was not too big or too tight.

She leaned over to try to find a heel, but none was on offer.

"Damn!!" She exclaimed looking at how pathetic she was. She placed her legs into a black boot and carried her normal cross bag to fit it.

She told herself, "I look gorgeous and expensive," but her feelings deceived her and she started to laugh at herself.

"But I am way better than that Los Angeles model." She growled and left the house. After tossing her keys into the bag and closing her door, she realized she had not eaten.

She dismissed it with a shrug and called a cab to get her to work.

She made a mouthful, "Lavender News station please." She works as a secretary for the general manager of the station.

She hissed, making the driver look at her disgustingly through the mirror as she said, "That flirty old man." She swiftly collected herself and settled back to enjoy the ride as soon as she realized that.

"Your money is $100, ma'am. We are here." As she heard the driver's voice, she forced herself to slowly open her eyes and stretch.

"Gratitude" After that, she got off and turned to face the building ahead of her.

"I'm partially doomed" She stumbled in and nearly fell, tripping over her shoelaces. She bent over to tie it properly.

"You're still tying your laces, The time is nine fifteen am and I took permission to come call you on the phone" She heard my friend and colleague's voice making her raise her head.

"Don't worry, I lied on your behalf so just go in and tell them you had a runny stomach due to indigestion which made you come late" Laura, Her friend smirked.

She mumbled as a result of thinking, "When I thought she had helped me, how do I say something so awkward in front of everyone?"

"Now that you are following me, walk as though you are dehydrated." With a laugh, Laura entered the station, Dunn trailing closely behind.

The moment she stepped her feet into the meeting hall, The faces that turned in her direction, their eyes alone made her dehydrated so no need to pretend.

"You shouldn't have any excuse to come late for a meeting like this " Thank goodness no one witnessed her flirtatious old boss, Mr. Lake, almost scream, causing her to squirt in disgust.

With his customary flirtatious tone, Johnny said, "Come and sit here."

Hiding her distaste, she thought, "I have a legitimate reason for detesting Johnny since I hate guys who are clingy and love talking naughty."

"Unfortunately, someone who deliberately investigated one of the wealthiest models and brought attention to our news station has to be fired." With anticipation of learning what would happen next, everyone looked up.

The mention of Dunn's name had everyone in a state of extreme shock.

Her lower lips drop down immediately as she stutters, overwhelmed with confusion.

"Dear Dunn Edwards, you are hereby fired as a secretary to the general manager of this station for digging out an unfavorable article about Joan, One of our most cherished and loved models in the whole of the United States" The man was known to be the CEO of the station mouthed and penned down.

She and the other staff's confusion skyrocketed as they watched the higher-ups leave the meeting room.

"Why did you do that?" Nancy mouthed, putting on a sympathetic look.

"Do what? I didn't know anything" She mouthed looking at Nancy with confusion all over her facial expression.

"Everyone here knows how much you detest Joan, so I'm not surprised you could do it " Except for Laura, Nancy walked out of the meeting hall wearing an evil smile that she quickly covered up.

"I will come meet you at home, but you have to leave now before they call the security," Laura said, looking pitifully at her friend.

"I will stay till three pm before I get going, I have to pack my things too" Dunn smiled sadly. She stood up and proceeded to rest and pack her things later in the day.

"To celebrate my defeat, I am positive I will head to the club and get wasted." With sobs and dejected eyes, she too left.

************

Joan was seen with her phone placed on her right ear. She was receiving a call which made her smile.

"I got the job done ma'am" One of the girls she sent on an errand voice came in through her phone.

"I will send you the remaining payment now, I will clear away people that dislike me. I'm Joan, America's treasure and hottest model" She smirked, putting an end to the phone call.

She smiled satisfied at the result of her actions "I don't care if I stooped so low but I'm coming to New York soon and I need a clear path" She mouthed, picking up the glass cup in front of her and placing her lips on the edge of the cup to gulp down the content.

"What the hell is this?" She screamed, spitting out the wine angrily.

"I apologize, ma. You were occupied on the phone when I brought it, so it became mixed with room temperature." One of the maids begs on her knees.

"You are a crazy bitch; you ought to have shoved your meaningless justifications down my throat." She yelled, throwing the glass cup in her direction and she dared not try to dodge it.

" You are fired! " She screamed. She stood up and walked away to avoid getting angrier just by looking at those lowlifes.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
