Chapter 1 The Old House

Karen's pov

I rode down the eerie pathway that lead to my parents old house, according to my GPS it was situated in the farthest corner of the street. I had a solemn song on by one of my favorite singer–taylor swift, as I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel.

After I got admitted into college the first thing, my parents suggested was that I stay in their old house in Houston as a reward for my achievement. I was literally happy about it, my dad signed a document transferring the right of ownership of the house to me.

I hummed to the music as I pulled into the parking lot that was at the corner of the duplex and climbed down the car, a cool wind blew past my face brushing it tender texture around my face. A sweet smile spread across my lips as I stared at the building before me, despite the fact that it was an old house the beige and white color that were use to paint the house was fascinating even thought it was already in faded display.

I walked toward the trunk of the car and pulled out my bags, dragging them toward the front door as I looked down to my pocket to fish out my keys, as I brought out the keys, I spotted a young man in his late forties sitting in his front yard with a news paper in his hands.

He looked towards my direction and waved to me, I nodded flashing a bright smile his way as I inserted the key. The door creaked open as a dusty smell welcomed me. I sighed as I stared at my apartment with the thought of so much cleaning I had to do, I made my way up the stairs.

After so much cleaning and washing I threw myself on the couch with a plate of pancakes and soft drink, I ordered from a nearby eatery. I sipped the orange juice as I swiped through my course lists and time schedule for the course list.

I dropped my phone next to me so I get a mouthful of the pancake, but as I brought it close to my mouth, my phone started blaring with an incoming call from my mom. I dropped the pancake and quickly grabbed the phone.

"Hello, mom," I said.

"Karen, how are you doing?" My mom asked in worried tone. "Haven't you gotten to the house?"

"Yes, mom."

"Okay, how'd see the environment, are the neighbors friendly?"

"I can't really say anything for now, mom. I just got here, I love this environment. It's peaceful and quiet."

"Okay, I'm sure you're going to like it. I and your father spent two months there last summer and we had a lot of fun, just try and avoid late night walks and early morning. Ensure you eat much and drink less."

I rolled my eyes as my mom continued her lecture about my daily schedule of, do-and-don't. She ended it with a sweet kisses sound which I assumed she was probably smearing her phone screen with her red lipstick.

As soon as the call ended, I stuffed as much pancakes in my mouth and lay my head on the couch while I chew on it, Slowly.

After finishing up with the pancakes, I took the plate to the kitchen. As I dropped the plate in the sink, I spotted a girl about my age standing next to the window opposite mine. She had blue eyes with specks of gray, her hair was short black hair with slight red at the tip. She was staring at me, almost like she could see through me.

I waved at her cheerfully but when she didn't budge or returned the waved, my smile deflated and I dropped my hand, slowly to my side. I heard someone whom I assume was her mother called her, she turned towards the direction before turning to me, before leaving she waved at me with a thin-lipped smile.

I walked back to the living and turn on my laptop, I needed to do something that would pull me out of the boredom I was starting to submerged in. As soon as I strolled through the list of movies that piled up the screen, I heard a knock on the door.

I turned towards the door in awe of who it might be, I wasn't expecting anyone and I didn't have anyone friends in Huston. I walked toward the door, slight frightened by who it might be. I opened the door and saw the girl I saw in the window earlier, she was holding a stray of muffins along with a smile.

"Hey," I mumbled with a smile.

"Hi, I'm Mila. The next door neighbor and my mom wants you to have this," she said stretching forth the tray my way.

I collected the tray from her. "Thanks, tell your mom I'm grateful." I turned to go back into the house.

"Can I come in?" Mila asked, her eyes glowing in excitement as she flashed a friendly look my way.

I shrugged returning a thin-lipped smile to her. "Yes, of course you can."

She walked in and took a seat on the couch, while I went into the kitchen to dropped the muffins. "I'm Karen," I said as I made my way to sit in the couch opposite her.

She smiled. "Nice name, are you a new intake in Bradenton college?"

I gasped in slight awe. "How'd you know that?"

She chuckled and tucked her har behind her ears. "My mom is a close friend to yours, earlier today they called to informed her that you're coming, since then my mom wouldn't breath without telling me how much you're such a nice girl."

I wrapped my hands under my chest. "Cool, my parent can be so informative sometimes, but it's cool to know I won't be lonely in this neighborhood."

She smirked. "I also attend Bradenton college."
