THE DECISION

The city's din faded as I stepped into my apartment, the silence enveloping me like a shroud. I locked the door, the click echoing through the empty space. Alone. Again. I dropped my keys on the counter, the metallic clang breaking the stillness. The familiar routine brought no comfort. Every day felt like a repetition, a cycle of isolation. My gaze wandered to the window, where city lights twinkled like stars. I felt disconnected, a spectator watching life unfold without me. The TV flickered to life, casting a pale glow. I sank into the couch, letting the noise fill the void. But the laughter, the chatter, and the music only highlighted my solitude. I grabbed my phone, scrolling through social media. Faces smiled, couples hugged, friends laughed. Everyone seemed connected, except me. The screen blurred as my eyes watered. Why did being alone hurt so much? I'd grown accustomed to it, yet the ache persisted. Memories of my childhood home flashed through my mind. My parents' smiles, my siblings' laughter, the smell of freshly baked cookies. It was a different life, one I could hardly remember. But the pain remained, a constant reminder of what I'd lost. As the night wore on, the city's sounds faded, and the silence grew thicker. I felt trapped, unable to escape the emptiness. Suddenly, my phone buzzed, breaking the spell. A text from an unknown number: "Hey, how's it going?" I hesitated, unsure how to respond. Who was this? And why were they reaching out? "Who is this?" I typed. "Someone who knows what it's like to be alone." My heart skipped a beat. How did they know? The conversation flowed easily, like a gentle stream. We talked about nothing and everything, our words weaving a connection. For the first time in months, I felt seen. Heard. The stranger's voice was a balm to my soul, soothing the ache of loneliness. As the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow over the city, the stranger's final message arrived: "Goodnight. You're not alone." Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes. For the first time in a long time, I felt hope. Maybe, just maybe, I wasn't alone after all.
