The brightness of computer screens bathed Sophia's face in an eerie blue light as her fingers danced over the keyboard. The clock on the wall chimed incessantly, showing 2:37 AM. But time mattered nothing when you were remaking your life, one line of code at a time.

NeuroLink's office, normally humming with activity, suddenly stayed motionless. Only the hum of servers and Sophia's quick typing broke the calm. She enjoyed it this way: just her and the exquisite complexity of artificial intelligence, without interruptions or prying eyes.

As she worked, unbidden thoughts of her recent separation from Ethan flashed across her mind like uninvited pop-up advertising.

"I can't do this anymore, Sophia," Ethan had murmured, his voice a combination of exasperation and hopelessness. "It feels like I'm married to your company, not you."

Sophia remembered the ache of his words, how they had penetrated through her carefully formed shields. "That's ludicrous, Ethan. You understood how significant this was to me when we got married."

"Important? It's become an obsession! When was the last time we had supper together? Or spend a weekend away? I feel like I'm fighting for your attention with a machine."

She had tried to bargain, to defend her vision, her enthusiasm. But staring into Ethan's usually warm green eyes, she had seen only icy disappointment. That look still tormented her.

Sophia shook her head, dispelling the memories. She took a sip of lukewarm coffee, grimacing at its unpleasant taste. Focus. The past was the past. Her future was NeuroLink, and right now that future rested on building this natural language processing system.

She absorbed herself in the exquisite reasoning of her task, letting hours go by unknowingly.

A voice shocked her from her code trance. "Soph? Did you sleep here again?"

Swiveling in her chair, Sophia spotted Maya standing at the doorway, arms crossed but a grin flashing on her lips. Maya's ever-present clunky headphones dangled around her neck, and she looked like she had just rolled out of bed, her bright purple hair a jumble. Given Maya's distaste to mornings, this was definitely true.

Sophia lifted her arms over her head, making a joke. "Sleep is for the weak." She smiled. "Besides, I think I've finally cracked the context retention problem we've been having."

Maya's eyes lit up. "No way! Show me."

For the following hour, the two friends and co-founders sat around Sophia's computer, eagerly examining the possibilities of the breakthrough. Maya's inventiveness beautifully complimented Sophia's technical accuracy, which was why they worked so well together.

"This is huge, Soph," Maya muttered, squeezing Sophia's shoulder. "But you know what else is huge? The fact that you're speaking at the tech conference in..." she looked at her watch, "...four hours."

Reality came slamming back. The show. Potential investors. The fate of NeuroLink hangs in the balance. Sophia's tummy did a flip of joy and anxiety. "Oh god," she muttered, hiding her face in her hands. "I'm not ready. The slides aren't polished. I haven't slept. I probably smell like a computer lab."

Maya sighed. "Relax, Wonder Woman. This is our time. Go home, shower, and put on something that says 'I'm a kickass tech CEO.' I'll finish refining the presentation slides and meet you at the meeting."

Sophia looked up at her buddy gratefully. "What would I do without you?"

"Probably forget to eat and turn into a coding zombie," Maya said. "Now go. Shoo. Make yourself human again."

An hour later, Sophia stood in front of her closet wrapped in a towel, hair streaming over the carpet. She gazed at her clothes, feeling self-conscious. What does a tech CEO under fire wear? She decided on a neat white shirt, cut black jeans, and a striking red jacket. Professional, but with a splash of color to stand out in the sea of suits she knew would crowd the meeting.

After adding a touch of mascara, Sophia looked in the mirror. She scarcely recognized the lady looking back at her. Gone was the bright-eyed girl who'd fallen in love with an ambitious law student project. In her place stood someone stronger, more focused, with a gleam of purpose in her eyes. Was this who she was now? Had the divorce and the tireless pursuit of her goals ruined her irrevocably?
