As I stared blankly at the ground, I reminisce about the betrayal of the beta of my former pack, the Silver Moon Pack, a year ago. I just turned eighteen and my parents who were the Alpha and the Luna of this once powerful pack were brutally stabbed and killed with a dagger by the second in line, Eliott, who deemed them as weak for wanting to sign a peace treaty with our fiercest rival, the Red Blood Pack. Now Eliott is the undisputed Alpha and he's bracing for an all-out war with our merciless adversaries.
Suddenly, I heard the piercing laughter of the Luna of my adoptive pack echoing in the corridor, a sound that twisted my insides like a knife. Her voice, filled with venom, reminded me of my place within the Dark Shadow Pack: a servant, a nobody.
"Diana!" The sharp voice of the Luna broke through my thoughts. "Get in here and clean this mess up!"
I sighed, pushing my unruly hair behind my ear, and trudged into the main hall where she stood, hands on her hips, glaring at me. "You call this clean? What kind of worthless creature are you?"
"I'm trying my best, Luna," I whispered, avoiding her piercing gaze. I could feel the heat of her anger radiating from her like a storm waiting to unleash its fury.
"Your best isn't good enough!" she spat, stepping closer, her breath hot against my face. "You're nothing but a useless slave. If you can't clean, maybe I should find a more suitable punishment for you."
I swallowed hard, my heart racing. "Please, I-"
"Enough!" she shouted, cutting me off. "You think you deserve pity? You're lucky to even be here. Remember that, or I'll make you regret it."
As I turned to leave, my heart sank with familiar despair. What would it take to escape this life? I longed for the day when I could feel free, but every moment of abuse chipped away at my spirit.
Just then, I heard a voice behind me, smooth and commanding. "Leave her alone, Luna."
I glanced back, my breath catching in my throat as I met the gaze of Alpha Kael. His dark hair framed his chiseled face, and those deep blue eyes held a mixture of authority and something softer that made my heart flutter.
"She's a servant," the Luna hissed. "She deserves to be treated as such."
Kael stepped closer, his presence radiating power. "She may be a servant, but she's still a member of this pack. Show her some respect."
I could hardly believe what I was hearing. The Alpha was defending me? My heart raced, a flicker of hope igniting in my chest.
"Respect?" the Luna scoffed. "You want to coddle her? She's nothing but an orphaned outcast. You're better than this, Kael."
"Am I?" he challenged, his voice deep and resonant. "You think being cruel makes you stronger? You're wrong. Strength lies in protecting those who can't protect themselves."
I barely dared to breathe.
"Stay out of this," the Luna snapped, but Kael didn't back down.
