Alexander Knight has everything, money, power, and a reputation as the city's most irresistible playboy. Women are his pastimes, not his priorities, and no one has ever dared to resist him... until Sophia Carter. Hired to manage a high-profile project at his company, Sophia is smart, grounded, and completely unimpressed by Alexander's charm. Her refusal to fall at his feet only fuels his obsession, turning what started as a chase into something far more dangerous, something that feels like love. But when their secret passion ignites into a public scandal, Alexander is forced to choose between protecting his empire or standing by the woman who's become his greatest weakness. And Sophia must decide if she can trust a man who's broken every rule except the one she never expected him to: never let her go. A slow-burn, scandalous, and deeply passionate romance about power, desire, and the one woman who brings a billionaire to his knees.

The Playboy's Undoing Chapter 1 The Spark

Alexander

They say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. That's an understatement. My father didn't just hand me a spoon, he built me an empire before I could walk. Knight Enterprises is one of the largest real estate investment companies in the country, and at thirty-two, I sit at the helm of it. Billionaire, bachelor, philanthropist, laser-focused and a womanizer. Let's not pretend otherwise.

The thing about women is they've always come easy. Too easy. I flash a smile, drop a compliment, and suddenly I'm the most interesting man in the room. Add my bank account to the mix and, well, you can imagine how little effort I've had to make.

So when I walked into the charity gala at the Hilton last Friday, I expected the usual. Eyes following me. Champagne glasses lifted toward me. Women angling their bodies so I couldn't miss the curves.

And yes, it all happened. I played my part too smooth, charming, predictable. I was in the middle of a laugh with a model whose name I couldn't remember when I saw her.

She was... different.

She stood near the back of the room, close to the exit, holding nothing but a glass of water. Not dressed to impress, not angling for attention. A simple navy dress, hair in soft waves, not a diamond or designer logo in sight. And the way she held herself, confident, steady, untouchable.

When I walked over, I was expecting the usual script. A pause, a flicker of recognition, the coy smile. Instead, she looked at me like I was interrupting.

"Hi," I said, giving her the smile that's gotten me out of trouble more times than I can count. "I don't think we've met."

"You're right. We haven't," she said, her tone cool and flat. Then she turned back to her water.

Just like that.

It wasn't just rejection, it was dismissal. Like I wasn't worth her time.

Do you know what that does to a man like me? It doesn't bruise the ego. It ignites it.

I didn't sleep much that night. Her face kept flashing in my head not because she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen (though she might have been), but because she didn't care who I was. She was immune.

By morning, I had her name. Sophia Carter. Event planner. Mid twenties. Graduated top of her class from NYU. Started her own boutique firm that handles high profile events, which explained why she'd been at the gala. No ties to my world beyond work. No social climbing agenda I could detect.

I should've let it go. I had a Monday board meeting, investors to charm, deals to close. But every time I glanced at my reflection in the glass walls of my office, I thought about how she'd looked at me like I was just another man.

"Alexander?" My assistant, Jeremy, knocked lightly on my door. He was thirty, sharp, loyal, and married with two kids. Everything I wasn't. "The board is waiting."

I straightened my tie and grabbed my notes. "Let's make it quick."

Two hours later, I was sitting at the head of the long mahogany table, running through revenue projections while half the board fought not to yawn. Knight Enterprises had just secured a billion dollar deal with investors in Dubai, but even that didn't stir me today.

After the meeting, my younger sister, Lila, stormed into my office. She's twenty-eight, a lawyer, and the only person in the family who doesn't let me get away with my nonsense.

"You looked distracted," she said, crossing her arms. "Don't tell me it was another woman."

"Don't be ridiculous," I said.

Her eyes narrowed. "So it was another woman."

I didn't answer.

Lila groaned. "Alex, one day your games are going to blow up in your face. And when that happens, don't come crying to me."

I smirked. "Relax. It's just... she was different."

"Different how?"

"She didn't want me."

That got a laugh out of her. "Finally. Someone immune to the great Alexander Knight. I'd like to meet her. Shake her hand."

"You're hilarious."

"No, I'm serious." Lila leaned on my desk. "If she's not interested, let her be. Don't make her another one of your projects."

But it was too late. In my head, the game had already started.

Sophia Carter had ignored me.

And I was going to make sure it never happened again.

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran's "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father's multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city's most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins-the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street-and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
