I grew up with Asher from a young age. He once saved my life by taking a hit meant for me from an enemy, and I was kidnapped and brutally mistreated because of him. Everyone in the circle knew that I, the daughter of the Dixon family, was the center of Asher's world. But when he returned from building a branch in the Golden Triangle after two years, he brought back a young woman dressed in immaculate white. She looked pure, but she was provocative in her gaze. "Nicola, it was just an accident between Asher and me, but he insists on taking responsibility for me. Please stop him." I looked at her hand resting on her belly with Asher's ring around her finger. My fingers trembled slightly. The next moment, the bodyguard behind me pressed a cold gun barrel against that young woman's temple. I turned to Asher, who was clenching his fists tightly. I said coldly, "If you insist on marrying her, then leave the Dixon family for good."

Love Turns To Ashes Chapter 1

I grew up with Asher from a young age.

He once saved my life by taking a hit meant for me from an enemy, and I was kidnapped and brutally mistreated because of him.

Everyone in the circle knew that I, the daughter of the Dixon family, was the center of Asher's world.

But when he returned from building a branch in the Golden Triangle after two years, he brought back a young woman dressed in immaculate white.

She looked pure, but she was provocative in her gaze. "Nicola, it was just an accident between Asher and me, but he insists on taking responsibility for me. Please stop him."

I looked at her hand resting on her belly with Asher's ring around her finger. My fingers trembled slightly.

The next moment, the bodyguard behind me pressed a cold gun barrel against that young woman's temple.

I turned to Asher, who was clenching his fists tightly. I said coldly, "If you insist on marrying her, then leave the Dixon family for good."

Chapter 1

Asher's eyes were bloodshot. He stood straight. "Nicola, Gretchen stayed with me in the Golden Triangle for two years. Without her, I might not have made it back. I was drugged, and she had sex with me because she wanted to save me. She's always seen me as her elder brother. It's my fault, and I must take responsibility for her."

I loved Asher dearly, who had been unwaveringly standing up for me.

Yet, he stood against me for Gretchen at that moment.

I tried to stay calm. "If she weren't pregnant, would you choose to marry her?"

He was silent for a moment and then said in a hoarse voice, "The doctor said my last injury was so severe that I might not father any other children. Gretchen's pregnancy is a blessing from heaven. I truly want a baby, Nicola. Please let me have this."

Seeing his tightly knit brows, I suddenly remembered when he held me and said, "Nicola, even if we never have children, I'll always stay with you."

Those words become a blade piercing my heart at that moment.

I slowly stood up and walked to him. "So, do you want her to stay with you? Do you want me to accept her carrying your baby without any resentment?"

Asher's brows furrowed even more tightly. "Nicola, you're the Dixon family's daughter. She's just an orphan like me."

I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. "Asher, when my father took you in, I protected you and helped you rise. If I weren't the Dixon family's daughter, would you be standing here talking to me?"

Asher looked a little guilty, but he remained stubborn. "I want to keep this baby because I am grateful to you. Gretchen even agrees to give you her baby. She just sees me as her elder brother."

Gretchen Sanderson looked up with tearful eyes. "Asher, don't make things difficult for Nicola. I don't care about these things. Nicola, what happened between Asher and me was an accident. I have no interest in marrying Asher. I just want to stay around him."

I raised my eyebrows slightly, and the black-clad bodyguard behind me stepped forward and slapped Gretchen hard. "This is not your place to speak."

Gretchen's cheek was swollen, and Asher immediately shielded her behind him. "Nicola, Gretchen nearly died when she saved me in the Golden Triangle. How dare you treat her like this? She has a pure heart and no malice."

Gretchen glanced at me smugly, but what she said sounded broad-minded. "I'm fine. I'm not delicate. It doesn't hurt at all. As long as Nicola feels better."

Watching her and Asher perform their little act in front of me, I felt utterly disgusted. "Fine. Have it your way."

Asher looked up abruptly. Disbelief and joy flashed in his eyes. "But there's no room for you and her in my place. If you want to keep your baby, take her back to your place."

Without looking back, I turned and left. "Asher, don't dirty my home."

I lay paralyzed in a luxury Swiss clinic, my body a heavy sack of meat I no longer controlled. The heart monitor’s rhythmic beep was the only thing louder than the silence, a mocking countdown to my inevitable end. My fiancé, Jordan, walked in looking impeccable in the custom suit I had bought him for his birthday. He wasn't alone; my best friend, Chloe, followed him into the room, wearing the vintage Givenchy dress I had saved for our anniversary gala. Jordan didn't look like a grieving man; he looked bored as he held up a blue folder confirming that my family's offshore trust had finally cleared. Chloe giggled, leaning over me to ask if I finally realized it was the engagement wine she had spiked seven days ago. Jordan brushed a cold hand over my forehead, calling me a "perfect little asset" before pulling Chloe into a hungry kiss right over my dying body. To ensure there was no turning back, he pulled out a silver lighter and set my living will on fire, watching the only document that could have saved me turn to ash. I tried to scream, to curse them both to hell for stealing my life and my legacy, but all that came out was a wet, rattling wheeze. My own father, I would later learn, had known about the takeover and chose the profit over his own daughter's life. As the darkness swallowed me whole, I made a silent, desperate promise: if there was anything after this, I would come back and destroy every single one of them. I gasped, my body jerking upright as air rushed into my lungs like liquid fire. I wasn't in Switzerland, and there was no poison in my veins. I was back in my Manhattan bedroom, staring at a phone that read June 12—the morning of the wedding, the day I was supposed to die, and the day I decided to burn their world to the ground.

My wife, Vicky, said she had a business trip. "It's important, Ethan," she' d said, not looking at me. That was her excuse for missing the music festival, the one I' d bought tickets for months ago. So I went alone. Then, on the main stage screen, there she was, smiling next to Dylan Hayes, her college ex. The interviewer asked about inspiration. "Sometimes you wish you could go back to a simpler time," Vicky cooed, her eyes on Dylan. "Like, three years ago, before I made certain life choices." Three years ago. That's when we got married. My stomach dropped. The beer tasted like poison. My own public declaration of divorce at an open mic that night spiraled into a media frenzy. Vicky, terrified of public backlash, hit back. Not at me, but at my sick younger brother, Liam. She threatened to cut off funding for his life-saving leukemia treatments unless I went along with her sanitized PR narrative: we'd "amicably separated," and she was simply "reconnecting" with her new business partner-Dylan. The injustice burned. To leverage my brother's health for her image? To see her ex-lover ensconced in her company, a reminder of her betrayal? I was trapped, but I wouldn't be broken. She wanted a new chapter without me? Fine. I would write one for me and Liam. That night, while she celebrated her carefully crafted facade, I packed our bags. I typed up a divorce petition, signed it, and left it on her pristine kitchen island. I found a new, fully-funded clinical trial for Liam across the country. My brother' s treatment, my escape. We were gone, leaving her to face the consequences of her choices.

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
