I was a lowly Omega, but the Moon Goddess herself declared I was the fated Mate to Alpha Kaelan. For a year, I believed our love was a legend, and for the last eight months, I carried what I thought was his son and heir. Then I found the scroll. A year before he even met me, he had performed a blood ritual to make himself sterile. He did it all for another woman. The love story I cherished was a lie. He and his warriors had a betting pool on who the father of my bastard child was. They laughed as they used me on cold nights. He drugged me and let his true love, Seraphina, kick my swollen belly for fun. Then he offered my unconscious body to his men as a reward. My fated love, the future I was promised, was nothing but a sick, twisted game they played for their amusement. As I lay there, violated and broken, my heart didn't just break. It turned to ice. So I swallowed the forbidden herbs to end the life inside me. This was not an act of despair. It was the first act of my war.

Chapter 1

Elara POV:

The old parchment felt brittle beneath my trembling fingers, the ink faded to the color of dried blood. It was tucked away in the false bottom of Alpha Kaelan's private desk, a place I was only cleaning because the castle staff feared his temper.

My eyes scanned the elegant, spidery script of the pack's shaman.

"Ritual of Blood Binding. Performed upon Alpha Kaelan of the Blackmoon Pack. To sever his line from the Moon Goddess's whim and bind his life essence to his chosen, Seraphina. One year past. Note: The ritual renders the Alpha sterile as a consequence."

The words swam before my eyes, refusing to connect. A cold wave washed over me, so intense it felt like being plunged into a frozen lake. My hand instinctively went to my stomach, where our child-his child-had been growing for eight long months. The swell of my belly was a constant, heavy reminder of the future I thought we had.

A future as his Mate, his Luna.

The Moon Goddess herself had decreed it. The moment I first saw him, a year and a half ago, my world had tilted on its axis. His scent-a storm rolling in over a forest of pine and wet earth-had called to my very soul. My heart had hammered against my ribs, and the wolf inside me, a creature I had always struggled to understand, had howled a single, possessive word.

"Mine."

He had felt it too. I saw it in his eyes. He was the Alpha, and I was a lowly Omega, but the Goddess's will was absolute. He had accepted me. He had marked me.

But this scroll... this scroll said he had made himself unable to father a child a year ago. Before he even met me. For Seraphina.

Panic clawed at my throat. This was a mistake. A misunderstanding. I had to ask him. I had to see his face when he told me this was a lie.

I left the scroll on his desk and ran from the study, my bare feet silent on the cold stone floors of the Gothic castle. The heavy tapestries depicting ancient wolf battles seemed to watch me, their woven eyes full of judgment.

I raced towards the great hall, the chamber where Kaelan held council with his most trusted warriors. The massive oak doors were closed, but I could hear the rumble of deep voices and laughter from within. It was a sound that usually made me feel safe. Now, it filled me with a dreadful unease.

I pressed my ear to the cold wood.

"...can't believe she hasn't figured it out yet," a voice I recognized as Beta Corvus, Kaelan's second-in-command, boomed. "Eight months along and still thinks the pup is yours, Alpha."

A wave of cruel laughter followed.

"He made himself pure for Seraphina," another warrior chimed in. "But the Goddess cursed him with a Mate anyway. At least he found a use for her. A warm body for his loyal men to share on cold nights."

My blood turned to ice. My breath hitched in my chest. No. No, it couldn't be.

Then, I heard Kaelan's voice, the voice that could command armies and soothe my soul. But there was no warmth in it now. Only a cold, hard cruelty.

"Let her believe what she wants," he growled, and I felt the faint, oppressive pressure of his Alpha's Command even through the thick door. It was an innate power all Alphas possessed, a vocal command that lesser wolves were magically compelled to obey. "She's an Omega. What is she going to do? Even if she finds out, a worthless Omega carrying a bastard pup has no power here."

A fresh wave of roaring laughter crashed against the door, so loud I felt it vibrate in my bones.

"I'll wager a thousand gold coins the pup is mine," Corvus declared, his voice full of dark amusement. "I started this game, after all."

"I'll take that bet!" Lucian, another warrior, shouted. "I've had my turn more than anyone!"

A sickening thought, a whisper of telepathic communication, slithered into the edges of my mind. It was from Corvus, a Mind-Link broadcast to the other warriors in the room. The Mind-Link was a sacred connection, meant to unify the pack in hunts and in battle. They were using it like a tavern gossip line.

"I tried three times last month," Corvus's mental voice bragged, slick with pride. "She tastes like honey and desperation. It's delicious."

Something inside me shattered. The beautiful, fated love story I had built my life upon crumbled into dust and ash. It was all a lie. The loving looks, the tender touches, the promises of a shared future as the pack's Alpha and Luna. All a sick, twisted game.

I stumbled back from the door, a silent scream trapped in my throat. I had to get away.

"Stay," a distant echo of Kaelan's command brushed against my mind, a reflex from him feeling my presence.

But for the first time, the command had no teeth. It wasn't a shield that rose up; it was a tide. A surge of pure, overwhelming heartbreak and betrayal that simply washed his command away as if it were nothing. An inner strength I never knew I possessed, born in that single, soul-crushing moment.

I turned and fled, not knowing where I was going, only knowing I had to escape the suffocating walls of the castle. I ran until my lungs burned and my legs gave out, collapsing in the dark woods at the edge of the pack's territory.

After what felt like an eternity, a cold calm settled over me. The tears stopped. The shaking subsided. There was only a hollow, empty space where my heart used to be.

I knew what I had to do.

I found the hut of the old shamaness, the one Kaelan had banished for practicing forbidden magic. She looked at my swollen belly and the dead look in my eyes, and she did not ask any questions.

"I need Moonshadow Herb," I said, my voice flat and emotionless.

She nodded slowly, her ancient eyes holding a flicker of pity. "It will be painful. And there is no going back."

"Good," I said.

With the small, dark pouch of herbs clutched in my hand, I walked back to the castle, back to the grand suite I shared with the Alpha. But as I reached the door, I saw something was wrong. The intricate silver lines of the blood seal, a magical lock keyed to the life force of the inhabitants, had been changed. My blood signature was gone.

The door swung open before I could touch it.

Seraphina stood there. His beloved adopted sister. She was wearing a shimmering silver gown, the one that had been tailored for me, for my Luna ceremony after the pup was born.

Behind her, Kaelan stood in the shadows, his face an unreadable mask of cold indifference.

"The protection wards have been updated," he said, his voice void of any emotion. "The seal is now keyed to Seraphina's bloodline. This is her home now."

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.
