Chapter 1 Working for survival

Bella POV

My name is Bella Carter, a member of the Crescent pack, obviously an orphan. I was adopted by a single mother who later died with her child, and after that, I began to work as a house help with one of the Pack's members.

I was always beaten, and tortured by everyone who felt like inflicting pain on me whenever they wanted. It was tormenting to live with these types of people who felt that it was right to inflict pain on the members of their pack instead of protecting them.

I was a loner, which was the reason people took advantage of me. I was also the weakest member of the pack.

My wolf had tried communicating with me, telling me to fight back, but I wouldn't listen, so I guess, she was angry with me that we lost communication.

When my adopted mother was alive, life was rosy for me but after her death, everything changed. People called me names, they told me that I was cursed, that I killed my parents, my adopted mother, and her child.

In the house I worked, I wasn't allowed to touch some items.

The woman of the house was nice but didn't allow me to touch anything without her husband consenting to it.

I was given the name Carter by my adopted mother while the name Isabella was found on the necklace my adopted mother saw worn on me.

The woman of the house was kind to me, but I feared that one day she was going to change completely towards me. It was all because of her I had a place to sleep. Left to her husband, I should leave to the street after taking care of his house, but the woman told me to stay in the little house outside the one they lived in.

I could see the fear in her eyes whenever her husband looked at her after scolding me.

After some while, the woman also died leaving her husband and children alone.

"You are cursed," He always told me.

He instructed me not to stop my duty in the house unless I wanted to see his brutal side. I agreed to this in fear.

He reminded me anytime I came to his house of how his wife accepted me and how she died. I saw how brutal he was when he began to punish me; his friends punished me, and I was made to parade the street in the night.

"You have ten minutes to get this," He said to me in the night, waking me up, and I had no choice but to get it within ten minutes, or I would be beaten brutally.

His children, both younger and older mocked me.

I was always punished for the slightest mistake.

I was made to clean the entire house. The house was large, and some of his friends lived there. It had more than twelve rooms, but no one dared force themselves on me as they feared death.

I didn't complain as I believed that I was at fault. Maybe, my presence murdered anyone who showed me mercy. I will keep accepting their punishments until I die.

I sniffled when I remembered the punishments I always received. It wasn't my fault that I came into this world, but why did the moon goddess make me like this? I didn't get to see or know who my real parents were. The woman who had adopted me also died.

"Why this tragedy?" I asked myself.

The torture, the maltreatment, I just had to overlook. Someday, I will either be taken by the cold hand of death, or maybe someone will take me away making me understand that I am not what they call me to be.

I walked out of the house door as I was done cleaning and was met by one of his friends, a lady. She laughed at me to scorn.

"You, this good-for-nothing scumbag," she said laughing. "You look like a fool in this attire."

Ignoring her words, I greeted her and hurried to my quarters.

Immediately, I got into my quarter, I heard her scream.

"What is it?" I asked myself nervously.

I was afraid to go out as I might be implicated in anything she was planning. But, the scream got louder.

I walked out of my quarter a little and flinched as I saw her being bitten by two wolves. I withdrew back, but what got me afraid was when I saw one of the wolves transform into a human. He was one of the man of the house's friends.

I raced back into my quarter and sat on the floor.

"It's not safe here," I said.

I walked to the window as I still didn't believe what I saw. As I climbed up a table to get a glimpse, the other wolf had already transformed into a human. I stood, watching in horror as I saw her body fall to the ground.

"What the heck!" I exclaimed silently.

I watched, as I saw the man of the house walk out, shaking the two men. He turned to look at my window and I got down immediately so as not to be caught watching them.

"How can he want to kill his friend?" I asked myself. "Did he also kill his wife?"

My instinct told me to shut my door close, which I did. I also climbed the table and closed my window.

"It's better dying of suffocation than being bitten," I told myself.

Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door and this made me afraid. The knock became louder deafening my ears.

I took in a deep breath ready for whatever might happen. Slowly, I walked to the door and met Mr. Scott, the man of the house standing.

"I need you to clean up this mess." He said, pointing to the lady's body.

I knew better than to disobey his words. I walked out to get the body.

"I want it clean; no one should see it, or you will be forced to go to jail." He said.

I knew he meant every one of his words, although he was scared to touch me as he didn't want to die.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

My stepmother sold me like a piece of inventory to a man known for breaking people just to plug the financial crater my father left behind. I was delivered to the Morton estate in the middle of a freezing storm, stripped of my phone, and told that if I didn't make myself useful, my senile grandfather would be evicted from his care facility by noon. The master of the house, Adonis Morton IV, was a monster living in a silent mausoleum, driven to the brink of madness by a sensory condition that turned every sound into a physical assault. When I was forced into his suite to serve him, he didn't see a human being; he saw a source of agony. In a fit of animalistic rage, he pinned me to the wall and nearly strangled me to death just for the sound of a shattering teacup. I only survived by using my grandfather’s secret herbal blends and pressure-point therapy to force his overactive nervous system into a drugged sleep. But saving him was my greatest mistake. Instead of letting me go, Adonis moved me into a guest suite connected to his own bedroom by a hidden door. He didn't just want me as a servant; he needed me as a human white-noise machine to drown out the demons in his head. The nightmare deepened when he took the promissory note that defined my freedom and tore it into confetti. By destroying the debt, he destroyed my exit strategy. He replaced my maid’s uniform with a silver silk dress that clung to my skin but did nothing to hide the dark, ugly bruises his fingers had left on my neck. He branded me as his "primary care associate," a title that was nothing more than a gilded cage. I felt a sickening sense of injustice as he forced me to sign a contract that banned me from contacting other men and required me to sleep wherever he slept. He looked at me with a possessive heat, calling me his "medication" rather than a woman. My family had sold my body, but Adonis Morton was intent on owning my very presence, using my grandfather’s medical bills as a leash to keep me within twenty feet of him at all times. Standing in a neglected greenhouse with mud staining my expensive silk, I realized I was no longer a victim waiting for rescue. If I was going to be his medication, I would learn how to be his cure—or his undoing. I began clearing the weeds with a cold, calculated frenzy, determined to turn this prison into my laboratory. He thinks he has trapped a helpless girl, but I am going to pry open the cracks in his stone walls until his entire world comes crashing down.
