A Broken Heart's Awakening Chapter 1

At 25, everyone said that Evelyn Carter was the luckiest woman in all of the city of Beaumont.

The heir to one of the city's most influential families, Victor Blake, fell in love with her at first sight during a performance. Even after a tragic accident caused a stage rig to collapse, leaving her paralyzed, Victor defied all expectations and married her.

After the wedding, Victor spared no expense, hiring the top medical experts both in the country and abroad to treat her injuries, and he indulged her every need. He would do anything for her.

The day she stood again was their third wedding anniversary. Evelyn, filled with excitement, bought a large bouquet of flowers, eager to surprise Victor.

But just before she could enter their private room of a club, she overheard a conversation that would haunt her forever.

"On your anniversary, you're not at home with your little wife, instead you're here drinking with us. What's up with that, Victor?"

"Little wife? She's just his pet. He keeps her around, sitting in that wheelchair like a useless thing, making her do whatever he says."

Victor was sitting on the couch in the room, silently listening to their words, making no attempt to refute them.

James Thornton, his childhood friend, threw his arm around Victor's shoulder with a grin.

"If you ask me, Victor's plan was brilliant. He orchestrated Evelyn's stage accident to make sure she couldn't compete with Sophia anymore. Now she's stuck in that wheelchair, and Sophia gets to win the awards."

Evelyn froze in place, her hand just inches from the door, her smile suddenly faltering.

James and Victor had grown up together, and he wasn't shy about speaking so recklessly in front of him.

Seeing Victor's lack of reaction, James continued, "I just don't get it. If you've already ruined her, why go through the trouble of marrying her? Why hire the best doctors to treat her legs? Was it really love at first sight?"

Evelyn's heart clenched. She held her breath, waiting for Victor's response.

If Victor truly loved her, she could give up everything for him, even her own dreams.

But Victor's next words struck her like a slap to the face.

"Do you think that's possible? I married her so that Sophia could get what she wanted, to be with the person she truly loves. I don't need to be happy, but she has to be."

The room fell silent for a moment, and James let out a sigh, patting Victor on the shoulder.

"That's one way to put it. But you know that John Huxley just won't take no for an answer. He's been relentlessly pursuing Evelyn, even after she got married, still holding onto his obsession with her. Sophia has agreed to return home tomorrow, and it's likely she's finally giving up on him, ready to let go for good. You've had your fun with Evelyn, but don't wait until Sophia's married to someone else before you regret it."

Evelyn could listen no more. Her hand trembling, she wheeled herself back to the mansion.

The doctor visited again to check her legs, asking if she could feel anything. Evelyn stared blankly, shaking her head.

The man she had spent three years of marriage with, the one who had shared her bed every night, was the one who had caused the accident that left her paralyzed.

She couldn't bring herself to tell anyone in the mansion that she could now stand on her own.

There were spies everywhere in Victor's household. She couldn't risk him finding out that she was capable of walking again-what if he decided to ruin her legs once more?

At 10 PM, Victor came home as usual and asked the doctor about Evelyn's condition. When he was told that Evelyn still had no feeling in her legs, he sighed in relief, as if finally able to rest easy.

He then smiled, pulling a jewel necklace from his pocket and placing it around her neck.

"Happy anniversary, my love. Do you like it?"

Normally, Evelyn would have been overjoyed, caressing the necklace and resting her head against his chest with a shy smile.

But now, she couldn't smile at all.

Victor noticed her change in mood and knelt down in front of her, his brow furrowing with concern. "What's wrong? Did someone upset you?"

Without waiting for her to reply, he frowned and coldly ordered the butler, "Call everyone in the house to come here..."

Evelyn forced a smile, stopping him. "I'm fine, please don't make them uncomfortable."

Victor gently touched her face. "I've been busy at work today. I didn't even have time to spend the day with you. I promise we'll make it up."

Evelyn quickly replied, "How about tomorrow? I heard that international dance superstar, Deanna Cassan, is performing here in Beaumont. I'd love to see it..."

"Tomorrow won't work," Victor interrupted, cutting her off.

To the outside world, I was the envy of every she-wolf as the fiancée of Alpha Kael. But inside the gilded cage of his pack house, I was a ghost. I molded myself into perfection for him, wearing the colors he liked and suppressing my own voice. Until I walked past his study and saw him with Lyra—the orphan he called his "sister." His hand rested intimately on her thigh as he laughed, telling her, "Elara is just a political necessity. You are the moon in my sky." My heart shattered, but the physical blow came days later. During a training exercise, the safety cable snapped. I fell twenty feet, shattering my leg. Lying in the dirt, gasping through the pain, I watched my Fated Mate run. Not to me. He ran to Lyra, who was burying her face in his chest, feigning terror. He comforted her while I bled. Later, in the infirmary, I heard him whisper to her, "She won't die. It will just teach her who the real Luna is." He knew. He knew she had sabotaged the rope with silver, and he was protecting her attempted murder. The final thread of my love incinerated into ash. The next morning, I walked into the Council Hall, threw a thick file on the table, and looked the Elders in the eye. "I am dissolving the engagement," I stated coldly. "And I am withdrawing my family's silver supply. I will starve this Pack until you beg." Kael laughed, thinking I was bluffing. He didn't notice the lethal Beta from the rival pack standing in the shadows behind me, ready to help me burn Kael's kingdom to the ground.

Five years ago, I gave everything – my dreams, my health, every last penny – to save the man I loved from a fatal heart condition. I scrubbed pots on double shifts, my hands raw, convinced I was putting my love on the path to recovery. But his fiancée, Jennifer, had other plans. She showed him doctored photos, whispered lies, and made it seem like I was selling my body, not my soul, for him. He believed her instantly, threw the money back in my face, and walked away, spitting that I deserved to rot. Now, five years later, those words are a cold prophecy: my kidneys are failing, I have six months to live. As I stumbled out of the free clinic, dizzy and broken, I saw him again-Ethan Scott, now a superstar music producer, stepping out of a luxury car with Jennifer, her hand protectively over a pregnant belly. They were heading into the exclusive private hospital next door, a world away from my despair. My body chose that moment to betray me; I collapsed, scattering my pills and medical records on the dirty sidewalk. He stared down at me, his eyes colder than any winter, then watched as Jennifer ground her heel into my hand and had my lifeline swept into a trash can. He even threw a crumpled twenty-dollar bill at my feet, declaring I was worth less than a donation to an animal shelter. How could he believe such monstrous lies? How could he, the man I sacrificed everything for, be so utterly blind to the truth of what I endured for him? What secret did Jennifer hold over him that made him choose her cruel deception over the life-saving act I committed?

The Pierre Hotel smelled of old money and stale ambition, but all I could taste was the copper of my own rage. I stood in the back of the ballroom, a "mute" shadow in a silk dress, watching my sister Brande play the grieving saint on stage. She wiped away a fake tear, telling the crowd I was too "unstable" to attend my own engagement party. In reality, I was watching her share a secret, intimate squeeze with my fiancé, Chase Sterling, right under the blinding spotlight. When I finally hit "execute" and projected the video of them together in a hotel suite for the entire elite crowd to see, the room went cold. But the nightmare was just beginning. Instead of apologizing, my father crushed his scotch glass and told me to fix the mess. He demanded I issue a public statement claiming I had a mental breakdown and "hallucinated" the whole thing. "If you don't corroborate the Deepfake story, I'll have you committed to a facility with barred windows," he hissed. Brande just smirked from the corner, mocking me for being a "mute waste of space" who didn't even realize my own trust fund had paid for the diamonds around her neck. I realized then that in this family, silence wasn't a disability—it was a target. They thought because I didn't speak, I didn't have a voice. They thought they could use my silence to bury the truth and save their precious stock prices. They were wrong. I didn't just leak a video; I had the keys to every secret they ever tried to hide. I walked out of that hotel and straight into the black sedan of Julian Curtis, my father’s most ruthless rival and the only man who knew what really happened the night of the blizzard in Aspen. I handed him the encrypted files that would trigger a hostile takeover of my family’s empire. As the city blurred past, I looked at the man who held my future in his hands and typed one final message on my phone. "I'm not here to be saved. I'm here to be the knife."
