Reunion With Ex-boyfriend After Rebirth Chapter 1 1

Chapter 1

Eloise Brooke

'Congratulations, Mrs Holt. You are four weeks gone'

As I waited in the living room, my fingers tightened around the pregnancy test result, as if my whole world depended on it.

Lucas, my husband, walked in through the entrance door. Elegant in his charcoal suit. A briefcase in his grip. A deep frown on his face... as always.

My heart pumped hard in my chest as I stood and went to take his briefcase. "Lucas... You are home..."

He ignored me and went to sit on the couch.

"How was work? I made dinner... You should shower and eat something." I was sure I looked so stupid right now, with my voice almost shaky. I just didn't want him to have a reason to complain today like he always does.

"I'm not hungry..." He paused, his eyes scanned me with contempt, then he said, "Give me that," his voice icy cold and dismissive.

I hurried to give him his briefcase.

"Sit." He commanded, without so much as even a glance.

My heart pounded hard against my ribcage as I sat across from him, waiting for his face to soften so I could break the news of our baby to him, but what he did next made me freeze on the spot.

He dropped a paper and pen on the center table and pushed them to me, with the casual word. "Sign it, Eloise."

'What's this?' I resisted the urge to ask a question, reaching for the paper, however, my eyes widened the moment I saw what was written in the paper.

'Divorce agreement' I looked at him, shocked.

"Wh... what is this?"

"Divorce agreement. We are getting a divorce, Eloise."

I froze, the paper slipped from my hand. What is he talking about?

"Are you joking?"

"No, I'm not." He replied flatly, and my face went pale.

I swallowed the lump in my throat, picking the paper from the floor.

"Uhm... I...I... Lucas... Wh...why... I mean, what's going on? Why are you giving me this?"

I stuttered, hands trembling, lips quivering, and heart hammering against my ribcage.

"Lucas---"

"Rose and I are getting married. She's carrying my baby, and we are going to start living together soon. I don't want you to make her uncomfortable."

My jaw dropped, and my eyes widened. For a second, I stared in silence, trying to process what he said, and after a long silence, my voice sounded beneath the loud pounding in my chest. "Ro... Rose?"

Rose? Isn't that the woman he claimed was 'just a friend?'. The same woman I've told him several times that I wasn't comfortable with him being around her, and he claimed that I was just being insecure?

"I will write you a cheque later when you are done packing... I think that'll be enough to compensate you since you have nothing now."

Just like that? A cheque? To compensate me? After five years of marriage?

My heart twisted in my chest. I stared at the paper, its black letters swimming before my eyes. My mouth parted, but no sound came. Everything in me had gone still. I couldn't even cry. There were no tears left in my eyes.

'I promise to love, care for you, and cherish you for the rest of our lives'

That vow he made to me five years ago when we were joined together in front of both of our families as husband and wife. Did it mean nothing to him? The promise he made to always protect me, have they gone with the wind?

Love wasn't what brought us together, I know that. This whole marriage thing was arranged by both our parents, but I've always loved Lucas desperately. I was ready to make this marriage work, regardless of what it was going to cost me. But It was the worst mistake I ever made. Trying to make a man who feels nothing for me, to love me.

If only my parents are alive.

Born with a silver spoon in my mouth, and the heiress of a multi-billionaire, I got everything I ever wanted. My parents loved and treated me like a princess. I had the smoothest life, loved by everyone, Lucas and his mom included. At least that was what I thought, but that love only lasted till after the sudden death of my parents, and I lost everything they left for me.

Without another word, Lucas stood and turned to leave.

I rose to my feet and shook my head. "You can't divorce me, Lucas. I'm carrying our child."

He stopped and turned to me, his eyes flickered with shock, but it only lasted for a split second, then disappeared.

I knew I was crazy, but I was hoping he would change his mind about the divorce. However, his next words pierced right through my heart like a dagger.

"Do what you wish with the baby, Eloise. Keep it, or get rid of it... Your choice."

"Lucas!"

"Sign the paper before nightfall."

My legs trembled beneath me, and I crashed to the floor when they weakened.

Twenty months ago, I was here too. Bleeding. Broken. Mourning the child we lost. And he hadn't cared then either. Even when he was the reason we lost the baby.

'Why did I stay even after everything?'

There was only one answer. I was madly in love with him. And if there had to be another reason, it would be that he was the only family I had left. I was practically living at his mercy.

"Lucas..." My voice trembled. "Please don't do this... You can't do this," I crawled to him and held his leg, whimpering.

"You're all I have left, Lucas... Please... don't do this. Our child needs you. I need you." I begged without a choice. If I didn't, I was going to end up on the street. I would not be able to give our child the happy life he or she deserves.

"Sign the paper and leave my house, Eloise. I'm done." He kicked me roughly, and without another glance, walked away, while I cried out...

I lived as the "scarred ghost" of the Stephens penthouse, a wife kept in the shadows because my facial burns offended my billionaire husband’s aesthetic. For years, I endured Kason’s coldness and my family's abuse, a submissive puppet who believed she had nowhere else to go. The end came with a blue folder tossed onto my silk sheets. Kason’s mistress was back, and he wanted me out by sunset, offering a five-million-dollar "silence fee" to go hide my face in the countryside. The betrayal cut deep when I discovered my father had already traded my divorce for a corporate bailout. My step-sister mocked my "trashy" appearance at a high-end boutique, while the sales staff treated me like a common thief. At home, my father threatened to cut off my mother's life-saving medicine unless I crawled back to Kason to beg for a better deal. I was the girl who took the blame for a fire she didn't start, the wife who worshipped a man who never looked her in the eye, and the daughter used as a human bargaining chip. I was supposed to be broken, penniless, and desperate. But the woman who stood up wasn't the weak Elease Finch anymore; she was Phoenix, a tactical predator with a $500 million secret. I signed the divorce papers without a single tear, walked past my stunned husband, and wiped the Finch family's bank accounts clean with a few taps on my phone. "Your money is dirty," I told Kason with a cold smile. "I prefer clean hands." The cage is open, the hunt has begun, and I’m starting with the people who thought a scar made me weak.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.

I was the titan of Wall Street until an indictment and an ankle monitor turned my penthouse into a gilded cage. To save face, I was forced into a marriage with Elza, a "mute" girl from the Schmidt family whom I treated as nothing more than a silent piece of furniture while my empire crumbled. The night I was poisoned at a high-society gala, a mysterious server in an oversized uniform saved my life with terrifying, clinical precision. They disappeared into the night, leaving me with a silver cufflink and a burning obsession to find the shadow who held my life in their hands. Back home, I took my frustration out on Elza, telling her she was "exhausting to look at" and "smelled like sickness" after her charity visits. Her own family treated her like a stray dog, trying to humiliate her at the next gala by dressing her in what they claimed was a cheap knockoff while whispering to the press that she was nothing but a high-end escort. "Stay out of my way," I would growl at her, never noticing the steel in her eyes. I sat at my table, watching my rivals' stocks plummet and wondering who "The Zero"—the legendary financial ghost—really was. I never suspected that the woman I ignored was the same one solving the equations that were currently burning Manhattan to the ground. The injustice peaked when Elza stood before the city's elite, not as a victim, but as a queen. She dropped over a hundred million dollars to buy back her family’s legacy, revealing a secret fortune that made my own empire look like pocket change. As I grabbed her wrist and saw the small red mole hidden beneath her watch, the truth hit me like a physical blow. The silent wife I had despised was the savior I had been hunting, and she was finally done playing the victim. "We have a lot to talk about, wife," I whispered, realizing I had been sleeping next to the most dangerous woman in the world.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.
