The Don's Billion Dollar Rival Bride Chapter 1 The price of duty

(Sienna's POV)

"You're getting married in two weeks."

The words hit me like a slap. My fingers went numb, and the wine glass slipped from my fingers, shattering against the marble floor.

I barely heard the sharp gasp of a maid rushing to clean up the mess. My eyes locked onto my father, Edward Monroe, who sat in his leather chair, completely unfazed.

"You can't be serious," I whispered, my throat tightening.

"I'm always serious when it comes to family matters," he said, lighting a cigar. He exhaled a slow puff, his sharp blue eyes watching me like I was some unruly child throwing a tantrum. "You will marry Julian Castellanos. This alliance will strengthen both our families."

Julian Castellanos. The name alone made my stomach twist. I have heard the name a dozen times. Cold. Ruthless. A man who never smiled.

"I don't even know him," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"You'll get to know him after the wedding," my father said, as if it was that simple.

I clenched my fists. "I have a life, Father. Plans. You promised me control of Monroe Enterprises...."

"And you'll still have it. After you're married."

Anger burned in my chest. "And if I refuse?"

His gaze turned ice-cold. "That's not an option."

I sucked in a sharp breath. "I'm not some pawn in your business deals."

"You've always been a pawn, Sienna." His voice was calm, too calm. "You were just too naive to realize it."

A cold chill ran down my spine.

I turned to my mother, Margaret Monroe, who had been silent this whole time. "Mom?" My voice cracked slightly. "You're okay with this?"

She finally spoke, her tone unreadable. "Sienna, sweetheart, it's for the best. Julian is....."

"I don't care who he is!" I snapped. "I won't marry a man I don't love."

My mother's lips thinned. "Love is a luxury, not a necessity."

I let out a bitter laugh. "And you're happy with this life? With him?" I gestured toward my father.

Her expression didn't change. "Happiness is irrelevant. Power is what matters."

The words slammed into me. I felt like I couldn't breathe.

I turned back to my father. "I can't do this."

"You will," he said. "Or you'll lose everything."

My stomach dropped. "What?"

"You heard me." He exhaled another cloud of smoke, his smirk slow and cruel. "Defy me, and I'll strip you of your inheritance and your hard work. You'll have nothing."

My pulse roared in my ears. "You wouldn't."

"Try me."

Silence stretched between us, suffocating and thick.

I felt my world caving in.

I swallowed hard, my fingers trembling. I had spent years working toward taking over Monroe Enterprises, proving myself capable. The life I had built, the dreams I had fought for and now, all of it could be ripped away in an instant. My father knew exactly how to control me.

I forced herself to meet my father's gaze as I found it hard to breathe. I needed time. "Give me time to think."

His smirk didn't fade. "You have until tomorrow," he said. "After that, there's nothing left to discuss."

***********

I stormed out of the estate, barely registering the cold night air as I pulled out my phone.

Harper. I needed Harper.

I dialed her number. "Pick up. Pick up."

Voicemail.

I cursed under my breath. I needed to get out of here.

Flagging down a cab, I rattled off an address without thinking.

I needed to breathe, to think-to drown this anger in something reckless.

The car pulled up outside Celeste, the city's most exclusive nightclub. I didn't hesitate. The moment I stepped inside, the bass pulsed through my veins, and the scent of whiskey and expensive perfume wrapped around me like a drug.

"Sienna?"

I turned toward the bar, spotting Harper, my best friend, in a short red dress, holding a cocktail.

"What the hell are you doing here?" she asked, brows furrowing.

I slid onto the barstool beside her. "Trying to forget that my father just sold me off like a piece of property."

Harper's eyes widened. "Oh, hell no. Who?"

"Julian Castellanos."

She nearly choked on her drink. "You mean The Julian Castellanos? Ice-cold billionaire, rumored to ruin more companies than he builds?"

I groaned. "Yep."

Harper whistled. "Damn. If you're about to marry a soulless devil, we better make tonight count."

I smirked. "That's exactly the plan."

Harper signaled the bartender. "Two shots of your strongest."

I downed the drink without hesitation, the burn trailing down my throat.

And then I saw him.

A man leaned against the VIP section, dressed in a sharp black suit, a glass of whiskey in hand. Dark hair, sharp jawline, piercing blue eyes. He was watching me.

My pulse quickened.

"Who is that?" I murmured.

Harper followed my gaze. "No clue. But damn, he looks dangerous."

Exactly what I needed.

I grabbed my second shot, downed it, and stood.

Harper's eyes widened. "Sienna, wait...."

Too late.

I walked straight toward him, heels clicking against the floor. He didn't look away. Didn't even blink.

I stopped in front of him, tilting my chin up. "You've been staring."

His lips curled slightly. "And you walked right over."

His voice was deep. Smooth. Dangerous.

I arched my brow. "Should I be worried?"

He leaned in, his breath warm against my ear. "That depends. Do you like playing with fire?"

Heat licked down my spine.

"Maybe."

"Good." His gaze dropped to my lips before flicking back to my eyes. "Because I don't do soft, sweetheart."

My heart pounded.

This wasn't me. I wasn't reckless. I wasn't impulsive.

But tonight, I needed to be.

"Dance with me," he murmured.

I didn't think. Didn't hesitate.

He took my hand, pulling me onto the dance floor. His grip was firm, his body close. He moved with effortless confidence, his touch possessive.

"Do I get a name?" I asked, breathless.

A smirk. "Stranger"

"Stranger?". The name rolled off his tongue like a promise of sin.

My pulse thundered.

One night. Just one night before everything changed.

I leaned closer, lips brushing his ear. "Then ruin me, Stranger."

His grip tightened.

"Careful what you wish for, sweetheart."

And then he kissed me-hard, demanding, nothing soft about it.

I let myself get lost in it. In him. In the reckless abandon of this night.

I had no idea that this wasn't just one night. That this hot stranger would turn my world upside down in ways I couldn't begin to imagine.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, the crinkle of the sanitary paper sounding like thunder in the sterile room. The doctor didn't even look at me as he confirmed the news: the pregnancy was over. My husband, Keyon, didn't answer my call. He just sent an automated text: "In a meeting." When I returned to our cold mansion, I found his iPad glowing with a message from his "muse," Katina. He was throwing her a secret gala tonight-on our third wedding anniversary. He told her he couldn't wait to escape the "boring" and "draining" atmosphere I created at home. Keyon didn't stumble in until 3 AM, smelling of Katina's perfume with a smear of red on his collar. When I handed him the divorce papers, he laughed in my face. He called me a "glorified housekeeper" with no skills and no future, promising I'd be back in three days begging for a subway ticket. He even bet his friends ten thousand dollars that I wouldn't survive a week without his name. He had his assistant cancel my credit cards and block my gate access before I even reached the end of the driveway. He wanted me to starve. He wanted me to crawl. He sat in his office, mocking the "desperate" woman who pawned her three-million-dollar wedding ring for scrap metal just to pay for a meal. I stood on the rainy curb, watching the man I had protected for three years treat my life like trash. He didn't know about the ultrasound I just threw in the bin. He didn't know that while he was calling me "dull," I was the one secretly writing the code that kept his billion-dollar empire from collapsing. As I slid into a cheap Uber, I opened a hidden, encrypted app on my phone. The screen refreshed to a dashboard for an account Keyon didn't know existed. The balance was ten figures long-the accumulated wealth of "Solaris," the world's most elusive tech genius. Keyon thinks he just evicted a parasite, but he's about to find out he just declared war on the only person who can hit "delete" on his entire life.

My five-year-old daughter was dying in the ICU, her heartbeat replaced by the continuous, electronic scream of a flatline. I gripped her cold hand, my throat sealed shut by a terror so absolute I couldn't even cry out. I dialed my husband Grayson's private number, the one reserved only for me and his assistants. He declined the call instantly. A second later, a text buzzed against my palm: "In a meeting. Do not disturb. Stop calling." Five miles away, Grayson was at a luxury gala, adjusting his silk tie and laughing with Belle Escobar. He told her I was just being "dramatic" and using our daughter's "fever" as an excuse to avoid the event. He had no idea Effie's heart had already stopped. When I finally reached our penthouse, soaked from the rain and carrying Effie's small socks in a plastic bag, Grayson didn't even look at me. He snapped at me for ruining the hardwood floors and asked if I'd left Effie with the nanny just to "feel sorry for myself." Three days later, while I buried our daughter in a small, lonely ceremony, Grayson was at the Hamptons. Belle posted a photo of him golfing with the caption: "A mental health day with the boys." He didn't even attend the funeral, but he returned home demanding I clear out Effie's room to make a study for Belle's son. The injustice burned through me until there was nothing left. I swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, desperate to join my daughter. But instead of the darkness, I woke up to blinding lights and the scent of Grayson's expensive cologne. I was standing in a ballroom, wearing a blue silk dress I had already burned. Above me, a banner read: "Happy 5th Birthday Kaiden & Effie." I was back, exactly one year before the tragedy. This time, I wasn't going to be the grieving wife. I was going to be their worst nightmare.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
