Alina is a hybrid wolf, solitary, without a pack, who has a very complicated life, balancing a job in the marketing department, student loans to pay off and medication to stay sane. Her only connection to the supernatural world is her friendship with Samia, the daughter of a strict alpha who rules with an iron fist. Tamia, despite living under her father's strict expectations, dreams of finding her true mate, but faces the constant pressure of arranged marriages between packs. To circumvent her father's plans, Samia makes an unusual deal with Alina, paying for her to go in her place to dinners with candidate alphas, but things take an unexpected turn when she comes across the pack alpha Bleeding Heart who calls her "Hybrid".

Hybrid: Between Alphas and Secrets Chapter 1 Protection

Alina´s POV

"My back burns like it's on fire. If someone had told me some time ago that I would be in this kind of pain, I would never have believed it. Now, chained in this dungeon amidst my own blood and vomit, I wonder how I got here. How can a man who claims to love me do this to me?

Today is one of those busy days for me-the day to con yet another poor guy who's taken an interest in Samia. Lucky for her, since she keeps such a private life, they barely know her face at those dances she complains about, the ones her father forces her to attend. But that's the deal. I have to help a friend, especially when she pays me ten grand a date.

Something feels different today, though. A weight sits heavy on my chest. I pop one of my pills, hoping for quick relief from my anxiety. In the meantime, I gather my long brown hair into a ponytail, swipe on a light shade of eyeshadow to highlight my brown eyes, and apply a rosé lipstick that enhances my lips. The black dress I slip into falls just below my knees, hugging my figure with a discreet V-neckline.

The restaurant's black façade glows under the lights, creating a striking contrast that screams exclusivity. Inside, an impeccably dressed host greets me and leads me to a table bathed in soft, strategic light. He offers me water, which I gladly accept-I need to calm my nerves.

The ambiance is refined. Wooden walls adorned with minimalist paintings, fresh flowers scenting the air, plush velvet chairs, and crisp white tablecloths. The soft hum of jazz plays in the background. Samia is lucky, I think, trying to steady myself.

A voice slices through my thoughts. "That perfume of yours isn't fooling anyone, hybrid."

My body locks up, the water catching in my throat as a man slides into the seat across from me. His brown eyes fix on mine, unwavering. I try to maintain my composure, but there's something in his gaze-something that strips away my defenses.

He has that effortless, dangerous charm. Tall, easily over six feet. Lean but muscular. His dark brown hair is neatly styled, his features sharp and commanding.

"Good evening," he says, voice smooth but edged with something else. "I'm Alpha Marco, and you're not Samia, Alpha Noah's daughter. But tell me-do you think you can play games with Alphas and walk away unscathed, hybrid? Don't you know what happens to those who try?"

The amusement in his tone unnerves me almost as much as his words. My pulse kicks up.

"I'm sorry," I murmur, pushing up from my chair, desperate to leave. But his voice halts me.

"Sit down. I didn't say you could go."

His smile is small, knowing. Reluctantly, I lower myself back into my seat.

"Look, I was just... helping a friend. I'm not a threat to you or your pack. I swear, you'll never see me again." My voice wavers, my hands curling into fists beneath the table.

He watches me, savoring my discomfort. My stomach churns, fear tightening around me like a vice.

"No, you're not a threat," he says, voice dropping to a near whisper. "But you're something far worse."

My brow furrows. "Worse? I don't know what you're talking about. And why do you even care? I'm just... nobody." I emphasize the last word, hoping to distance myself from whatever game this is.

He leans in, his breath warm against my skin. "You may believe that, but I don't. What you carry, hybrid, is rare. Valuable. Too precious to be left unprotected. That's why I'm offering you protection."

My heart stutters. "Protection? From what? No one is after me."

A smirk tugs at his lips. "Not yet. But you should be protecting yourself... from me. Because right now, the only thing stopping me from taking what I want is my patience. And patience isn't something I'm known for when it comes to liars. Do you understand?"

I swallow hard. "I don't have anything of value. I'm just trying to survive."

His amusement fades. "I can't do much about Samia's betrayal. She's an Alpha's daughter, which shields her under rules that don't apply to you." His gaze sharpens. "But you? You have no pack. You live alone on Lis Vill Street, tucked away in some ordinary district. No family, no one to come looking for you. If I wanted to, I could do anything I pleased, and no one would even ask questions."

A chill spreads through me. How does he know so much about me? My fingers tighten around my bag, every instinct screaming at me to run. But as I rise, I feel his eyes pressing into my back.

"Sit down," he commands, voice deceptively calm. "I'm not done with you yet."

Trembling, I obey.

"Tell me, what exactly were you thinking, pretending to be an Alpha's daughter?" He leans back, observing me like a predator biding its time.

"I told you. I was helping a friend. It was just a harmless setup," I say, but even I don't believe my own words.

"Harmless?" He lets out a short, humorless chuckle. "You really have no idea what you've stepped into, do you?" He shakes his head, eyes darkening. "There are others who would kill to get their hands on a hybrid like you. I, at least, am giving you a choice."

A choice? It doesn't feel like I have one. "And what exactly are you offering me?"

"Loyalty. Protection. A chance to stay alive. All you have to do is come with me."

A cold shiver runs down my spine. "And if I refuse?"

His smirk returns, slow and deliberate. "Then I'll give you a head start before the others find you. But we both know you wouldn't get far."

I grip the edges of the table, my mind spinning. This is a trap. A game where I'm already the losing piece. My pulse pounds in my ears as I realize: no matter what I choose, my life will never be the same again.

The Pierre Hotel smelled of old money and stale ambition, but all I could taste was the copper of my own rage. I stood in the back of the ballroom, a "mute" shadow in a silk dress, watching my sister Brande play the grieving saint on stage. She wiped away a fake tear, telling the crowd I was too "unstable" to attend my own engagement party. In reality, I was watching her share a secret, intimate squeeze with my fiancé, Chase Sterling, right under the blinding spotlight. When I finally hit "execute" and projected the video of them together in a hotel suite for the entire elite crowd to see, the room went cold. But the nightmare was just beginning. Instead of apologizing, my father crushed his scotch glass and told me to fix the mess. He demanded I issue a public statement claiming I had a mental breakdown and "hallucinated" the whole thing. "If you don't corroborate the Deepfake story, I'll have you committed to a facility with barred windows," he hissed. Brande just smirked from the corner, mocking me for being a "mute waste of space" who didn't even realize my own trust fund had paid for the diamonds around her neck. I realized then that in this family, silence wasn't a disability—it was a target. They thought because I didn't speak, I didn't have a voice. They thought they could use my silence to bury the truth and save their precious stock prices. They were wrong. I didn't just leak a video; I had the keys to every secret they ever tried to hide. I walked out of that hotel and straight into the black sedan of Julian Curtis, my father’s most ruthless rival and the only man who knew what really happened the night of the blizzard in Aspen. I handed him the encrypted files that would trigger a hostile takeover of my family’s empire. As the city blurred past, I looked at the man who held my future in his hands and typed one final message on my phone. "I'm not here to be saved. I'm here to be the knife."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."
