Sonya Edwards is a successful entrepreneur who has risen from the ashes of her painful past with a nonchalant husband. But when her ex-husband Callum Peters comes crawling back to her, she must decide whether to give him another chance or simply leave him in the dust.
Sonya's POV
*****
"Congratulations, Mrs. Peters. You're four weeks pregnant!"
As soon as I heard those words from the doctor sitting behind his desk, my mouth fell, my eyes fluttering as I tried to wrap my head around the whole thing.
I'm... I'm pregnant?
I wracked my head, trying to think of how possible this was.
My husband, Callum Peters, and I have been married for three years. But it wasn't a happy union.
Our union was an arranged marriage from both our parents to secure both our family names after the media scandal incident that involved the two of us.
Callum's parents have always pressured him for an heir and we have tried our best to have a child to no avail. We even tried IVF but that proved fruitless too.
"T– Thank you, doctor," I muttered, my face heating up with a blush as I stretched my right hand forward and took the result papers.
I stared at the results, my eyes skimming through as if I still couldn't believe the doctor's words. Maybe it's because I couldn't.
After three years of an unhappy marriage, Callum rarely ever slept at home. He had houses all around the city and stayed in these houses for weeks without seeing me.
And each time when he finally sees me, he doesn't make any moves to touch me.
Except for one unexpected night about a month ago when he came back drunk...
I touched my stomach, my lips curling up into a warm smile as I realized that a child was growing in there.
"If you seem this excited, I can only imagine how excited your husband would feel." The doctor remarked with a smile as I stood up from the office seat.
I flashed him a smile and shook my head. "You have no idea, doctor."
Without wasting another second, I rushed out of the office and scurried to my car outside the hospital premises.
When I stepped into the car and started ignition, my mind began racing with so many possibilities. I was unsure of how to break the news to Callum.
Do I tell him on call since we rarely ever saw each other?
"No, that would be a bad idea." I sighed to myself, shaking my head as I began driving through the busy highway of the city. "His birthday is coming up soon though. Maybe..."
I could surprise him on his birthday! I'll go to his office with a cake and break the news of my pregnancy to him on that day.
It would be the perfect surprise.
"Sonya, you're a genius," I said to myself, my smile widening as I kept on driving.

On the day of Callum's birthday, I prepared myself to go see him in his office.
Before I did, I grabbed my phone and decided to dial his number, to at least wish him a happy birthday before getting to his office.
Unfortunately, when I called his number, the call got directed to voicemail, causing me to sigh with disappointment.
I'll just drop a message then...
"Uh, good morning, Callum," I said awkwardly, while simultaneously placing some finishing touches to my makeup in the mirror. "I just want to say happy birthday. I know our marriage hasn't been the happiest and that there have been a lot of things that need fixing. But I promise you... I'm sure that's all about to change soon."
My heart was filled with warmth as I subconsciously touched my stomach and smiled while the phone was still stuck to my ear.
"Anyway, I'm on my way to your office. I hope to see you there. L– Love you." I said the last part hastily, hanging up and placing my phone in my purse before I sighed.
The last time I ever dared to tell Callum 'I love you,' he had lashed out at me and mocked me.
"What do you expect me to say? That I love you too?!" His sarcastic voice still echoed in my mind from that fateful evening. "Hehe, don't be delusional, Sonya. You and I both know that if it weren't for our parents meddling, we wouldn't be sitting at this dining table together or be in this sham of a marriage."
"Gosh, I shouldn't have come here in the first place!" He had snapped and flung the plates of food that I had painstakingly prepared, causing me to jolt with fear.
Ever since then, the words 'I love you' made my heart sink whenever I heard them used either on the television or by actual people.
I sighed, shaking my head before I parted my hair aside in front of the mirror and nodded my head before clutching my purse and running out of the room.
When I got to the large living room, I picked up a red box where I had kept the cake I had custom-made for his birthday.
It took me ten minutes to get to the high-rise building where his office was. His father is the CEO of this company and owns a chain of other companies in the country.
Anyway, I've been here only a few times so no one recognized me at all as I navigated my way through the lobby until I got to the elevator.
When the elevator took me to the floor where Callum's office was located, I drew in a deep breath as I stepped out and continued walking, my footsteps heavy with the excitement I felt.
Callum's office door soon came into my view. However, his secretary, who sat on a large desk outside his office, was nowhere to be found.
That's... Odd.
I dimmed my eyes, glancing at the secretary's desk before scanning my gaze around the office floor.
"Maybe she stepped out to go get something," I muttered to myself.
I shrugged to myself and decided to knock on Callum's office door. However, when my knuckles were only a few inches away, I paused when I heard giggling from within the office.
The giggling belonged to a female voice, causing my eyebrows to furrow into a frown as I placed my head on the door after looking around and realizing that no one was looking at me.
"Oh, Callum. We should've just gone to one of the hotels nearby to celebrate your big day." The female voice said slyly, her voice low but clear.
My heart began pounding heavily against my chest, my body trembling as I waited patiently, trying desperately to hear Callum's voice.
After a few seconds, the worst happened, and my world came crashing down.
"Very well, then. I'll take you to one of my penthouses and maybe we could... Order some delicacies from that new restaurant." Callum's deep voice echoed, followed by a chuckle. "And then I could eat you out if you know what I mean."
The two of them continued laughing, causing my eyes to twitch as hot tears stung them.
Without thinking straight and led by my emotions, I barged into the office, my gaze immediately landing on Callum sitting behind his office desk.
Sitting on top of Callum's legs was Amanda, his secretary, whose long brown hair was tied up in a messy bun.
The buttons of her shirt were undone, exposing her breasts to Callum, who was too busy trailing kisses all over her neck and chest to notice my entrance.
"Callum!" I screamed out, closing the door behind me and forcing the two of them to swerve their heads to me with surprise.
The box of cake in my hands fell to the ground, crashing down alongside my heart.
