Chapter 1 Blight

Feei

My skin prickles with unease like I've got live insects running a marathon on it. I itch to turn around and confront the one tailing me, such an amateur I thought my lips curling into a smirk. Just a pervie stalking a young unarmed woman. A walking target for men like him. I stride into an alley and walk deeper into the shadows and his steps quicken as the distance shorten between us. I whirled around just as he tried to grab me from behind. I grab hold of his wrist and within a few seconds had him on the cold, hard frosty ground.

He gasps in disbelief as he stared at my smiling face.

"Hi! How can I help?" I bit out, the smile still plastered on my face. My eyes frosty emeralds no doubt.

" Um... nothing. I just thought...I"

" That's what I thought, next time don't stalk people. You never know where it gets you."

"Yes, I'm sorry."

I let go of him and watch as he walks out of there fast as he could. I chortle, and walk deeper into the alley, my apartment building is in the other side, I lift my head and scent the air, pulling it deep into my lungs. I wait for the onslaught of images to go through my skull, and a slight pain splinters my temples and I gasp slowly, glad that I don't need to move again. I'm glad that I don't have to move out of this city for another one yet.

I meandered the streets and find myself staring at my apartment building, I ignore the overly cheerful receptionist's wave and jump in the elevator.

I've chosen this comfortable apartment building on a whim, to pamper myself just once instead of choosing low budget hostels full of college students and backpackers.

I brandish my key and open my door, I close it silently, and hop on the sofa. I strip my jacket off and and chuck it beside me. I sigh, rubbing hands over my tired eyelids trying to shake off the fatigue, working in a nightclub has its perks and moans.

I strip and slowly made my way to the shower and wash all my worries away, another day lived, another tick off in my life. A bitter smile comes to my lips, I stave off the shroud of sadness that swathes me, a tear creeps out from my eyelid and joins the water cruising down my cheeks.

Finally, I step out and towel dried my body and slid into my PJ's and jump into bed my body braces for what's to come.I took in large gulps of air and close my eyes, teetering towards the abyss of sleep.

I jump up gasping for breath as claws has just started to claw at me. Loud voices from the next apartment filtered in, I sighed and hurry outside. P*ss*d off and sleep deprived, I hissed loudly as I stepped outside to confront my noisy neighbor.

I rapped loudly on the door, the voices stopped and silence filled the air. I knocked loudly, footsteps come nearer and the lock turned and the door opened just as I curl a fist to knock.

Frosty ice blue eyes set in a killer handsome face, his face looks so perfect and untouchable, the kind of untouchable beauty that repels all touches, I want to smash a fist into all that perfectness. I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Yes! How can I help you?" A perfect smirk taunts me to lift my fist.

"Someone people are trying to sleep, I would appreciate it if you keep it down."

"Is that all?"

"Yes. Thank you." I bit out.

Help, please help me ble...

I stiffened, not having heard a voice in my head in ages. I gripped my head and back away from the door. No, no I don't want to get myself entangled in this situation, I take a whiff of what they are and slowly back away. How did I not scent them, I have become lazy and reckless.

Ignore all pleas. They'll always put you in trouble.

I take another step back. Trying to pull myself together, pretty guy was shoved out of the way, the door widened and a huge guy steps out with a small, very pale almost translucent teenaged girl, dark veins stand prominently on her arms in his arms.

"What are you doing Nolan?"

"You tell me she says she can help."

"Blessed moon." The girl points a frail finger in my direction.

I froze, and so did the guys. I gather my thoughts together and attempt at an awkward smile. And walk towards my door. "Sorry I think you got the wrong person."

"Please. Please help me. It's the dark blight. I know you can help." She whispers as an inky black tear makes its way down her cheek.

One wrong decision changes her life. Caught stealing in the wrong person's house. Thing is he won't let her go easy. He wants to own her, his little thief. ***** Footsteps echoed behind her. Measured. Calm. Unhurried. Not boots. Bare feet on polished wood, like the devil himself had rolled out of bed to stretch his claws across the shadows cast by the full moon that could be seen through the broken glass window high in the sky. She bit down hard on her lip. Shit she got in the wrong house. Then his voice whiplash in the room. "I'd offer you a sip of my coffee, but you look like the type to slip something into my cup." Cady jolted. Whirled around, her hands clutching her throat. He stood just at the edge of the kitchen-half-shadow, half-statue. Shirtless, sweatpants riding low on his hips like even gravity deferred to him. One hand wrapped around a cup of coffee, the other hanging loose at his side. No weapon. No cuffs. No badge on display. But his eyes... They pinned her in place more effectively than steel. Ford Wilson. The name meant a dozen things depending on who you asked. Hero. Tyrant. King of a city no one remembered voting for. She'd never seen him up close before. Only the headlines. The rumors. The whispers that followed in the wake of bodies that didn't make it to court. "Didn't expect company tonight," he said, sipping slow, like this was a casual inconvenience and not a break-in. Cady couldn't speak. Her throat was sandpaper and panic. He walked toward her. Unhurried. Lethal. "Let me guess," he said softly. "Rent's overdue. Boss shorted your paycheck. Maybe someone you love is sick. The usual story. You're not the first, you won't be the last." She gritted her teeth. "I'm not looking for pity." "Good," he said, eyes narrowing. "I don't offer it." He stopped a few feet from her, head tilted like he was studying an exhibit. Not a threat. Not a thief. Just an animal caught in the wrong kind of trap. "You picked the wrong house." She swallowed. "Didn't come for you." "But you found me." His voice dipped, quiet now. "And that makes you mine." Her stomach twisted. "You're not calling the cops?" she managed. He smiled, but it wasn't kind. "Why would I share?" Her heart thudded wildly. "You going to kill me?" "Not yet," he said, too casually. "You broke in. That's leverage. And I never waste leverage."
