"I think it's about time you devour me." I heard him say and I blinked. What was he talking about? A frown creased my face. His confidence and graceful poise seem to unnerve me. He had something about him I couldn't figure out, yet. "Wh-a-t did you say?" I stuttered, forcing myself to tear my eyes away from his face. He chuckled, then leaned closer to my ears. "I asked when you were going to devour me." I flinched. What was he playing at? Was he flirting with me so openly? I willed myself to ignore his statement. I had a bigger task at hand to let myself be bothered by a pretty man. I cleared my throat and his eyes were now focused on me. "I have no time for your gimmicks. Excuse me." Chapter 1 One

Ava's POV

"And what did you think you are doing?" I heard the unmistakable voice of Alpha Luke as I stepped in to do my duties that morning.

"Good mor...ning alpha." I stuttered, bowing my head as my eyes briefly landed on where he was sitting.

He had a pen on his hand and he was scribbling some things into a book.

"That didn't answer my question bitch." He growled, stood up then walked closer to me. "Who the hell are you and what did you want in my chamber this early?"

I took two steps backwards, intimidated by his tall, burly frame but I didn't let it show in my face.

"I am here to clean your Chambers alpha." I said gently, not meeting his gaze.

"Clean my Chambers? And you didn't know I don't like being disturbed before 9:am?"

He asked and I shook my head. Alice didn't tell me that. I wish I had knew that before, I wouldn't have been in this kind of situation.

"Who are you talking to darling?" I heard a feminine voice ask from alpha Luke's inner room.

That must be his fiancee that I have heard so much about. I have heard different tales from various pack members of how her beauty seems to shimmer brightly like the sun. Just seeing her walk into the room Alpha Luke and I stood confirmed all I've heard.

"It's no one you should bother yourself about." I heard him say as she leaned in to kiss him.

I felt my wolf growl inwardly when they kissed but I didn't know why. My wolf rarely communicates with me so it all seemed shocking to me. Most people in the pack had termed me wolfless. They believed I was cursed by the moon goddess and would never see a mate. It was a wild belief in our pack that anyone who doesn't have a wolf is cursed and would die without having a mate.

I was still in my thoughts when I felt a hand ran across my eye and I flinched. It was Alpha Luke, apparently he had been talking to me. His fiancee wasn't by his side anymore.

"You haven't been listening to what I was saying." He said, his eyes summing me up.

I shook my head slowly. "I'm sorry alpha."

"Layla wants you to do some chores for her."

He said and I assumed his girlfriend to be Layla as she was now back from the inner chamber. A polythene bag was in her hand which she immediately threw at me and I caught it just in time, thanks to my sharp reflexes from my days of training secretly.

"What's this?" I asked, looking from Alpha Luke to Layla.

Layla scoffed then asked. "It's my undies and clothes, any problem?"

I checked the bag then confirmed what she had said. It was indeed her undies. Why in the name of the seven gods is she giving me her undies and clothes? I furrowed my eyebrows. Maybe she wanted me to deliver it to the pack's drycleaner.

Layla cleared her throat, instantly gaining my attention. She must have noticed the confused look on my face.

"You should return them tomorrow before evening and make sure it is ironed."

She said then turned to go back into the inner chamber.

"Joe takes three to four days to wash and iron." I said which made her stop in her tracks.

She turned back with her brow creased. "Who the hell is Zoe?"

'Oh, she didn't know the pack's drycleaner?' I thought inwardly.

"Joe." I corrected. That earned me a disgusted look from her.

"He's the pack drycleaner." I explained.

She scoffed, then gave a small laugh before she faced Alpha Luke who was now back to his scribbling on the table.

"Luke, who the hell is this clown?" I was surprised to hear her ask Alpha Luke.

"I don't know, she must be new." I heard Alpha Luke responded nonchalantly.

"That explains it." Layla scoffed once more then gave me a hard look, maybe to intimidate me. But I didn't cower as she she expected.

I remained proudly standing on my feet, my eye fixed on hers, and that seems to infuriate her.

"Get that back to me by tomorrow or you'd be sorry!" She barked leaving me standing rooted and stunned.

I couldn't say anything as Alpha Luke's gaze was on me all through. If it was any other person, I would have throw the clothes right back. But Layla was no ordinary person; she was Alpha Luke's fiance and the daughter of another pack's Alpha too.

As I went out of the pack house, my mind was clouded with the thoughts of my sick mother who was the very reason I was here to work.

She told me the pack had been attacked. During the attack she had been infused with wolfsbane. This now affect her healing abilities. She's almost wolfless as she could now be affected by various human diseases and illness.

I had hoped to raise some money for her surgery which would barely be enough, but I have another plan to borrow from the pack bank.

I just hope everything goes smoothly as I had planned, I'm beginning to get edgy and frustrated.

As I took the alleyway that led to the hospital where my mother was currently receiving treatment, the ringing of my phone jolted me out of my reverie.

It was Dr. Alex from the hospital calling, and seeing his name suddenly brought some kind of fear in me. I picked up after contemplating for some seconds.

"Where are you Ava? You need to come to the hospital right away." He said and immediately hung up.

I immediately noticed the urgency with which he spoke and I broke into a run. Dr. Alex was the one attending to my mother at the pack hospital and I knew it had to do with my mother when he called.

I was breathing hard as I ran into Dr. Alex's office, startling him from the list of files he was rummaging through.

"Is my mother okay doctor?" I asked, still breathing hard from how I had run so fast to the hospital.

"Your mother is fine." He cleared his throat then added, "but won't be for long, if we don't carry out the operation in a few days."

My mind instantly raced. What does he mean by she won't be for long?

"But you said she still have some months!" I cried out, my voice thin from exhaustion.

Dr. Alex is the pack's best doctor and he's quite efficient. But everyone in the pack knew him for his greed.

His fees were always outrageous! He's a callous and selfish man.

"Yes, it's quite surprising. Last time I checked, the cancer was in the early stage but now....."

Doctor Alex's words were inaudible to my ears as I was now filled with my own thoughts. I couldn't watch my mother die. I had to save her one way or the other. Even if it meant going to the ends of the earth.

And with a new determination, I breezed out of the doctor's office with only one destination in mind.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.

For four years, I traced the bullet scar on Chace’s chest, believing it was proof he would bleed to keep me safe. On our anniversary, he told me to wear white because "tonight changes everything." I walked into the gala thinking I was getting a ring. Instead, I stood frozen in the center of the ballroom, drowning in silk, watching him slide his mother's sapphire onto another woman's finger. Karyn Warren. The daughter of a rival family. When I begged him with my eyes to claim me, to save me from the public humiliation, he didn't flinch. He just leaned toward his Underboss, his voice amplified by the silence. "Karyn is for power. Ember is for pleasure. Don't confuse the assets." My heart didn't just break; it incinerated. He expected me to stay as his mistress, threatening to dig up my dead mother’s grave if I refused to play the obedient pet. He thought I was trapped. He thought I had nowhere to go because of my father’s massive gambling debts. He was wrong. With shaking hands, I pulled out my phone and texted the one name I was never supposed to use. Keith Mosley. The Don. The monster under Chace's bed. *I am invoking the Blood Oath. My father’s debt. I am ready to pay it.* His reply came three seconds later, buzzing against my palm like a warning. *The price is marriage. You belong to me. Yes or No?* I looked up at Chace, who was laughing with his new fiancée, thinking he owned me. I looked down and typed three letters. *Yes.*

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.
