Chapter 1 A Shadow Beginning

Chapter 1: A Shadowed Beginning.

The wind howled through the dark alleyways of Crestwood, a city where secrets clung to the streets like mist. Monica Rivers adjusted the hood of her jacket, her heart pounding as she pressed herself against the damp brick wall. Her breath came in short, controlled bursts as she peered around the corner, eyes locked on the man exiting the Grand Royale Hotel.

She had memorized his face from old newspaper clippings and surveillance footage, but seeing him in person was different. He moved with quiet confidence, his sharp eyes scanning his surroundings as if he knew he was being watched. Monica's fingers tightened around the small dagger she kept hidden in her sleeve. This was the man responsible for the death of her parents, or as she had believed for the last decade.

She took a slow breath, tonight, she would get her first real glimpse of the monster who had shattered her world.

Gad crossed the street, slipping into a black car that was waiting for him at the curb. Monica hesitated only for a second before darting into traffic, weaving between honking vehicles to keep up. Her mind was a tangle of emotions, grief, and anticipation. All these years, she had trained, waiting for the moment she could face him.

The car turned a corner, and Monica picked up her pace, her boots slapping against the pavement. She reached for her earpiece. "Do you have eyes on him?"

Static crackled before a voice answered. "Yeah. He's heading toward the docks. You sure you want to do this alone?"

"I need to," she replied, "Stay on standby."

As she ran, memories clawed their way to the surface flames, licking the sky, her mother's desperate screams, and her father's blood staining the floor. And standing among the chaos, a shadowy figure with piercing eyes. Gad Donovan. The man she had vowed to destroy.

Gad's fingers drummed against the leather seat of his car as he watched the city lights blur past. He could feel it. Someone was following him.

He exhaled slowly. It wasn't the first time.

"Want me to lose them?" his driver asked, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"No. Let them follow." Gad's voice was smooth, unaffected. He had spent too many years in the underbelly of this city to be rattled by a tail. If anything, he was curious. Who was bold enough to track him?

His thoughts shifted as the docks came into view, the salt in the air mixing with the scent of oil and decay. The car slowed, and he stepped out, pulling his coat tighter against the night's chill. He made his way toward an abandoned warehouse, his steps deliberate, knowing his pursuer would be close behind.

Monica watched from the shadows, her grip tightening on her dagger. This was it. The moment she had waited for. She inhaled sharply, then moved, swift and silent as a ghost. She reached him just as he entered the warehouse, slipping in through a side door before he could disappear.

Inside, the air was thick with dust, the only illumination coming from a few flickering overhead lights. Gad stood in the center of the vast space, his back to her. It was almost too easy.

Monica stepped forward, raising her dagger. "Gad Donovan."

He didn't turn, but she saw the subtle shift in his posture. "That's my name."

"You killed my parents."

A pause. Then, finally, he turned to face her. Their eyes met, and for a brief second, confusion flickered across his features before his expression settled into something unreadable. "Did I?"

Rage flared in Monica's chest. "Don't pretend you don't know. I saw you that night. You stood over their bodies. You"

"You saw what you wanted to see," Gad interrupted, his voice calm, measured. "But I've never killed an innocent in my life."

Monica hesitated, caught off guard by the certainty in his voice. It wasn't the reaction of a man caught in a lie. It was something else entirely.

"Then explain," she demanded, her grip on the dagger tightening. "Because I've spent the last ten years believing you were the monster who ruined my life."

Gad studied her for a long moment before he exhaled. "You're not ready for the truth."

Monica lunged. She was fast, but he was faster. He sidestepped at the last second, catching her wrist and twisting it just enough to make her drop the dagger. She spun, aiming a kick at his ribs, but he blocked it effortlessly.

"You're skilled," he admitted. "But revenge won't give you what you're looking for."

Monica wrenched free, breathing hard. "And what exactly am I looking for?"

"The real killer. The one who set that fire. The one who wanted your parents dead."

Her heart stilled. "What are you saying?"

Gad stepped closer, his voice a low murmur. "I wasn't the only shadow in that room that night. If you want justice, you need to stop looking at me and start looking at who benefited from their deaths."

Monica's mind raced. Could it be possible? Had she been chasing the wrong enemy all these years?

Gad reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. "When you're ready for the truth, come find me. Until then, stop hunting ghosts."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Monica standing amidst the dust and shadows, her world shifting beneath her feet.

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.

I had been a wife for exactly six hours when I woke up to the sound of my husband’s heavy breathing. In the dim moonlight of our bridal suite, I watched Hardin, the man I had adored for years, intertwined with my sister Carissa on the chaise lounge. The betrayal didn't come with an apology. Hardin stood up, unashamed, and sneered at me. "You're awake? Get out, you frumpy mute." Carissa huddled under a throw, her fake tears already welling up as she played the victim. They didn't just want me gone; they wanted me erased to protect their reputations. When I refused to move, my world collapsed. My father didn't offer a shoulder to cry on; he threatened to have me committed to a mental asylum to save his business merger. "You're a disgrace," he bellowed, while the guards stood ready to drag me away. They had spent my life treating me like a stuttering, submissive pawn, and now they were done with me. I felt a blinding pain in my skull, a fracture that should have broken me. But instead of tears, something dormant and lethal flickered to life. The terrified girl who walked down the aisle earlier that day simply ceased to exist. In her place, a clinical system—the Valkyrie Protocol—booted up. My racing heart plummeted to a steady sixty beats per minute. I didn't scream. I stood up, my spine straightening for the first time in twenty years, and looked at Hardin with the detachment of a surgeon looking at a tumor. "Correction," I said, my voice stripped of its stutter. "You're in my light." By dawn, I had drained my father's accounts, vanished into a storm, and found a bleeding Crown Prince in a hidden safehouse. They thought they had broken a mute girl. They didn't realize they had just activated their own destruction.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
