Chapter 1

Burning Desire

Mary's POV

Being the only child of the CEO of one of the biggest beverage companies in the country meant my life had always been dictated by responsibilities. While other girls my age dreamt about romance and adventure, my world was consumed by board meetings, financial reports, and corporate rivalries.

The company was everything to my father. It was his legacy, his life's work. And now, it was falling apart.

A new rival company had taken the market by storm, stealing our top clients and crushing our sales. The pressure to save my father's empire was suffocating me. Every day felt like a battle, and no matter how much I fought, I was losing.

I sat in my office, my fingers gripping a pen so tightly it nearly snapped. My mind raced through possible solutions, each more desperate than the last.

And then my phone rang.

Stella.

"Hey, Mary! There's this amazing party tonight, and we have to go!" Her voice was filled with excitement. "Come on! You might meet your future husband there!"

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "Stella, I don't have time for parties. I need to figure out how to fix this mess."

"Oh, please. You're working yourself into an early grave. Just one night, Mary! One night to let loose! You deserve this."

I hesitated. The truth was, I couldn't remember the last time I had done something for myself. Everything revolved around my father's company. Maybe... just this once?

"Alright," I relented. "But just this once."

"Yes!" She squealed. "I'll send you the address. Don't be late!"

When I got home, my father was in his study. I knocked, stepping inside.

"Princess," he greeted, opening his arms for a hug. "You look exhausted. How was work?"

I sank into his embrace, my voice weary. "It's bad, Dad. No matter what I do, I can't fix this."

He sighed, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "Mary, you've done all you can. Sometimes, you need to step back and breathe. You're a young, beautiful woman. Enjoy life a little."

I hesitated before saying, "I'm going to a party tonight."

His eyebrows shot up. "Well, that's a surprise."

Then he smirked. "Just make sure you use protection, and if you can, find yourself a rich, handsome man while you're at it."

"Dad!" My face burned as I stormed out of the room, his laughter echoing behind me.

---

The dress I chose was bold, scarlet red, hugging my curves like a second skin. The sleek fabric shimmered under the light, accentuating every line of my body. My long brown hair cascaded in soft waves down my back, and my makeup was subtle but alluring.

I stared at my reflection in the mirror, suddenly unsure. Was this too much?

Before I could change, my phone rang.

"Don't even think about backing out!" Stella warned.

I sighed. "Fine."

The driver took me to the address she sent-a high-end bar on the far side of the city, the kind of place where only the elite gathered.

As I stepped out of the car, a chill ran down my spine.

"Oh no. What have I gotten myself into?"

Inside, the atmosphere was electrifying. Dim lighting, low bass thrumming through the walls, and expensive perfume lingering in the air. Stella found me immediately.

"Mary, you look incredible! Every guy in here is going to lose their minds!"

I groaned. "I don't want to be the center of attention."

"Too late," she said, dragging me toward the bar.

I ordered a drink-one drink turned into two, and soon, the stress of the past weeks began to melt away. My body felt lighter, the music more inviting.

For once, I let go.

The dance floor called to me, and I answered.

I moved to the beat, my body swaying effortlessly. I didn't care who was watching. It was liberating.

Then I felt it.

A presence. A pair of eyes searing into me from across the room.

I turned.

And there he was.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. Devastatingly handsome.

He leaned against the bar, his posture relaxed, yet there was something dangerous about him. His dark hair was tousled, his tailored black shirt rolled at the sleeves, revealing strong forearms. But it was his eyes that held me captive-icy blue, piercing, unreadable.

A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he lifted his glass to his mouth, taking a slow sip, never breaking eye contact.

My heart raced. Who was he?

Before I could look away, he started walking toward me.

Smooth. Confidence. Like he owned the world.

The closer he got, the harder it was to breathe.

He stopped inches away. The scent of his cologne, rich cedarwood and spice wrapped around me like a drug.

He tilted his head, studying me.

"Dance with me."

His voice was low, smooth, and commanding.

I didn't answer. I didn't need to. His hand slipped around my waist, pulling me into him.

The world faded. It was just him and me.

Our bodies moved in perfect sync. His grip was firm but not forceful, his fingers pressing into my skin, igniting sparks with every touch.

I felt his breath on my neck as he leaned in, his voice a whisper.

"You're playing with fire, sweetheart."

A shiver ran down my spine.

Then, before I could think, before I could stop myself, I leaned in.

Our lips brushed.

A spark.

Then an inferno.

He didn't hesitate. His mouth claimed mine, deep, hungry, possessive. My knees buckled, but his arm tightened around my waist, holding me against him.

The kiss was unlike anything I'd ever known, raw, consuming, dangerous.

His fingers tangled in my hair, his other hand gripping my waist, pulling me closer until there was no space left between us.

Heat flooded through me, an unfamiliar but exhilarating sensation.

The music pounded around us, people danced, but nothing else existed.

Only him.

Only us.

I should have pulled away. I should have walked away.

But I didn't.

Because for the first time in a long time, I wanted to burn.

And God help me, I didn't care if it consumed me whole.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.
