My brother is a firefighter, and one day he responded to a fire alarm and arrived at the scene. After extinguishing all the open flames, he discovered a charred body. This was not a simple arson case, but rather a murder in retaliation against them. My brother immediately contacted Xie Duo'er, and only after hearing that she was safe did he feel relieved. A colleague asked about me. My brother scoffed, "What could happen to her? It's better if she were dead-don't let her bother me anymore!" He didn't know that I was dead; that charred female body was me.

Chapter 1

Kevin and the fire brigade arrived at the fire and extinguished the raging flames. As usual, they began inspecting the site to prevent a second chance of fire.

It was an amusement park abandoned for years, with very few visitors. None of them had expected they would find a corpse there.

A group of seasoned firefighters was stunned into silence by the horrifying sight they would not forget for the rest of their lives.

On the charred remains of a carousel sat a disfigured and armless corpse.

This wasn't just a simple case of arson. It was premeditated murder.

Kevin immediately reported the discovery. Soon, the criminal investigation team and a forensic examiner arrived at the scene.

"It's a female corpse. The victim's skull, lower limbs, and chest bones are severely deformed, likely from being struck with a blunt object like a hammer. There are also signs of tearing injuries showing she was mistreated when she was alive. The forensic examiner said as he conducted his inspection.

"How deeply does the murderer hate her? It's so cruel!" The investigators, even though accustomed to dealing with dead bodies, couldn't help but take sharp intakes of breath as they looked at the horrifying body.

Kevin, having just finished giving his statement, walked over and patted Dennis on the shoulder. "Any leads on the victim's identity?" He asked.

Dennis, Kevin's long-time friend, sighed and shook his head. "The body is completely charred. We can't extract DNA, so there's no way to match it with the missing people in the database."

Kevin scanned the surroundings, his brows furrowing. "This place is remote and desolate, with no surveillance cameras. The killer must have deliberately chosen this spot to dispose of the body. But why go to such lengths to set it on fire?"

As he shifted his weight, the charred wood beneath his foot cracked with a brittle snap.

As a spirit now, I felt my heartbeat was roaring in my ears.

Had Kevin finally sensed that something was amiss?

Amid my roaring heartbeat, I heard Kevin say, "It seems like the killer is deliberately provoking us."

"Dennis, we've found something!" The forensic examiner held up a ring with his gloved hands. "There's a diamond ring in the victim's mouth."

I could barely breathe.

The small diamond, despite being scorched by the flames, still shimmered with a haunting brilliance, just like it did on the day Kieran proposed to me. But now, I could never wear it again.

Kevin took the ring and examined it closely. My heartbeat raced as I watched him. Did he recognize it?

"There are two faintly visible initials engraved on the inside of the band," he murmured. "Looks like... C and B."

That was my name.

Chelsea Brown.

The truth was on the verge of being uncovered.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
