Chapter 1 Echoes from the Deep

The rhythmic hum of the research vessel Endeavor vibrated through the steel deck as Dr. Evelyn Carter stood at the bow, her wind-tossed hair whipping behind her like a banner of defiance. The Atlantic stretched before her in endless shades of indigo and gold as the sun sank into the horizon. To many, this sea was just water and myth. But to Evelyn, it was a question she'd been chasing her whole life.

And tonight, it was whispering back.

"Dr. Carter," a voice called, breathless and tight with urgency.

She turned. Lucas Reyes, the ship's lead oceanographer, was striding toward her, his brows furrowed and a tablet clenched in his hand. Something in his expression made Evelyn's heart thud against her ribs.

"We picked up a signal," he said, handing her the device. "But... it's not just strange. It's impossible."

Evelyn frowned, eyes scanning the flickering data. The signal was weak, fragmented, as though clawing its way through time itself. But the ID frequency was unmistakable.

"USS Monarch," she whispered. "That submarine vanished two years ago."

"Vanished and presumed lost," Lucas said grimly. "Until now."

He tapped the tablet, and a recording played-a voice, barely audible, distorted with static and raw desperation.

"-need help-rift is... alive-God help us-"

The words cut off in a hiss of white noise. Evelyn's blood chilled.

Before she could speak, Naomi Patel, their historian and linguistic specialist, appeared with something even more unsettling-an old, sea-stained map. "You need to see this."

Evelyn took the parchment. The ink had faded with age, but the markings were clear: an uncharted trench, precisely where the signal originated. Notes in archaic script warned of a cursed rift, a place where time shattered and souls were lost.

Lucas glanced at the coordinates. "That's fifteen nautical miles east of here. It doesn't even appear on satellite scans."

"It does now," Naomi murmured. "Barely."

Evelyn ran her finger over the map's darkened spot. The word "rift" echoed again in her mind, colliding with the distressed voice. This wasn't coincidence. It was a beacon. A door, maybe even a trap.

But if the Monarch was alive-or something aboard was-then they had a duty to find out.

"Prep the submersible," she said, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside her. "We dive at dawn."

As her team scrambled into action, Evelyn remained at the edge of the deck, staring into the waves. The wind seemed to whisper her name, and for a second, she swore the ocean answered back with something ancient.

Beneath them, the rift was waiting.

And once you crossed into the Bermuda Rift... there was no promise of return.
