He's the last kind of man she wants to fall for... but the only one she can't resist. Lysander has spent her life building walls around her heart. As a dedicated young nurse, she has no time for heartbreak-not again. But when Nolan Castille, a reckless billionaire with a smoldering smile and a troubled past, becomes a frequent visitor at the hospital, their worlds collide. He's infuriating. He's arrogant. He's everything she should avoid. But behind his charm lies something deeper-something broken. And when she glimpses the pain he hides, staying away becomes impossible. Lysander knows she's playing with fire. Nolan isn't the type to commit, and she isn't the type to settle for less. But the more she tries to resist, the more fate keeps pushing them together. Will she be the one to heal him... or just another scar on his soul?

Chapter 1 Strangers in the Supermarket

Chapter One

Lysander hated grocery shopping. It was an errand she barely had time for, sandwiched between long shifts at the hospital and the few hours of sleep she managed to squeeze in. But here she was, in the middle of a bustling supermarket, hunting down a specific brand of coffee because Sienna had dramatically declared she wouldn't survive another morning without it.

She weaved through the aisles quickly, ignoring the chatter of other shoppers and the faint hum of pop music playing overhead. The fluorescent lights buzzed softly, and the cool air smelled faintly of citrus and freshly baked bread from the nearby bakery section.

Spotting the coffee on the top shelf, Lysander stretched onto the tips of her toes, fingers just grazing the edge of the box. She let out a frustrated sigh. Of course, it had to be out of reach.

Just as she contemplated climbing the lower shelf for better leverage, an arm reached past her, easily grabbing the coffee she'd been struggling with.

She turned sharply, expecting to thank an employee-only to be met with an annoyingly smug expression.

"Having trouble, sweetheart?"

The man holding the coffee was tall, his dark hair slightly tousled in a way that looked effortlessly styled rather than messy. His sharp jawline and piercing green eyes made it impossible not to stare for a second too long.

Lysander quickly shook off the brief moment of distraction. "I'm not your sweetheart," she said, crossing her arms. "And I don't need your help."

He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Really? Because it looked like you were about to start rock climbing."

"Give me the coffee," she said, ignoring his teasing tone.

Instead of handing it over, he inspected the box, as if deciding whether it was good enough. "Sienna must be picky if she insists on this brand."

Lysander stiffened. "How do you-"

He smirked. "You muttered her name while reaching for it. Either that, or you just really love talking to yourself."

Lysander snatched the coffee from his hand. "Thanks for the unnecessary commentary."

She turned on her heel, eager to put distance between herself and the infuriating stranger, but he fell into step beside her effortlessly.

"So, do I get a name, or should I keep calling you Coffee Girl?"

Lysander exhaled sharply. "You should try calling me nothing."

"Hmm." He shoved his hands into his pockets, as if entirely unbothered by her disinterest. "I like Coffee Girl better."

She stopped abruptly, turning to glare at him. "Look, I don't know what your deal is, but I have places to be, so-"

"You're a nurse, right?"

Her frown deepened. "How do you know that?"

He tapped his temple. "Observant. You've got that exhausted-but-determined look. And," he gestured vaguely at her tote bag, "your hospital ID is kind of sticking out."

Lysander cursed internally and shoved it deeper into her bag.

"Now that we've established I'm perceptive, I think it's only fair you tell me your name."

She exhaled slowly, debating whether to keep ignoring him or just get this conversation over with. Against her better judgment, she muttered, "Lysander."

The smirk returned, like he'd just won something.

"Nolan Castille." He extended a hand. "Pleasure to meet you, Coffee Girl."

Lysander stared at his outstretched hand for a second, then walked away without another word.

She heard him chuckle behind her.

Something told her this wouldn't be the last time she saw him.

I was at my own engagement party at the Sterling estate when the world started tilting. Victoria Sterling, my future mother-in-law, smiled coldly as she watched me struggle with a cup of tea that had been drugged to ruin me. Before I could find my fiancé, Ryan, a waiter dragged me into the forbidden West Wing and locked me in a room with Julian Sterling, the family’s "fallen titan" who had been confined to a wheelchair for years. The door burst open to a frenzy of camera flashes and theatrical screams. Victoria framed me as a seductress caught in the act, and Ryan didn't even try to listen to my pleas, calling me "cheap leftovers" before walking away with his pregnant mistress. When I turned to my own family for help, my father signed a document severing our relationship for a five-million-dollar payout from Julian. They traded me like a commodity without a second thought. I didn't understand why my own parents were so eager to sell me, or how Ryan could look at me with such disgust after promising me forever. I was a sacrifice, a pawn used to protect the family's offshore accounts, and I couldn't fathom how every person I loved had a price tag for my destruction. With nowhere left to go, I married Julian in a bleak ceremony at City Hall. He slid a heavy diamond onto my finger and whispered, "We have a war to start." That night, inside his secret penthouse, I watched the paralyzed man stand up from his wheelchair and activate a screen filled with the Sterling family's darkest secrets. The execution had officially begun.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
