Chapter 1 Betrayal by a Close Friend

"Why is this happening..."

Lia Shimmer stared in disbelief at the notice of her degree revocation.

Months ago, she was an outstanding student, winning international awards and bringing glory to her school. Now, accused of plagiarism, she was being expelled.

Her designs were all her hard work!

"Shimmer, I never thought you'd be like this. I considered you a good sister, but you copied my work and got me suspected by the school..." Her university roommate and close friend, Sharon Frost, said innocently yet with a smug expression. "Luckily, the school and dean cleared my name. You should leave the design field."

Lia Shimmer looked toward the source of the voice and felt a sharp pain in her heart to see Sharon Frost linking arms with Xander Yung, both dressed in matching outfits like a loving couple.

Lia Shimmer was stunned by the engagement ring on Sharon Frost's hand. "You two..."

Today was S University's anniversary. Lia Shimmer, Sharon Frost, and Xander Yung were invited as excellent graduates. Lia Shimmer had planned to confess to Xander Yung during the event but was instead notified of her expulsion and degree revocation due to alleged plagiarism.

She looked to Xander Yung for help. As the first to see her designs, he could vouch for her. Sharon Frost had praised her creativity in front of him. If he testified...

Xander Yung met Lia Shimmer's eyes, guiltily and evasively. Finally, he said firmly, "Shimmer, I know Frost's designs are good. Your talent and grades don't match hers. You shouldn't have copied her work, harming yourself and her. You should apologize to the dean; maybe he'll reconsider revoking your degree."

"My designs are original! Sharon Frost copied me! Why should I apologize?"

Lia Shimmer felt she'd heard the biggest joke in the world. Noticing Sharon Frost's slightly swollen abdomen, she realized why Xander Yung was lying.

"Dear, you're kind, but..." Sharon Frost smiled viciously and said to Xander Yung in a coquettish voice, "Though Shimmer is my sister, she must pay for her wrongdoings. If not punished, she'll become a cancer in the industry. What if she copies others again? How about this..."

She looked down at Lia Shimmer with a venomous gaze. "If you kneel and promise to quit the field forever, I might plead for you."

"You dream!"

Lia Shimmer fought back tears. "Sharon Frost, you're just jealous of my talent and achievements. Do you think framing me and getting me expelled will make you a better designer? I won't leave. I swear I'll clear my name within two years and become the top designer in the country!"

"Dear, you saw her refuse. Let's not plead for her."

Seeing Lia Shimmer's defiance, Sharon Frost's face darkened. She raised her voice mockingly, "I hope she can still find work in our field with her degree revoked and plagiarism stain."

Watching Sharon Frost and Xander Yung leave like a golden couple, Lia Shimmer felt a stab of pain. Then, she heard a scornful laugh behind her.

Her sister, Lia Moon, stepped forward in high heels, arm in arm with Xu Ming, Lia Shimmer's former fiancé. "Shimmer, you're such a failure, abandoned by men again! Thanks for giving Xu Ming to me..."

"No!" Lia Moon covered her mouth, then gleefully corrected herself, "I took him from you. A failure like you, just like your dead mother, has no right to give men to others."

Lia Shimmer was enraged at the mention of her deceased mother. "Lia Moon, don't push it!"

"Am I wrong?" Lia Moon sneered. "Your dead mother and brother must be restless in their graves seeing you like this." She moved closer to Lia Shimmer's ear. "Your dead brother cried for you before he died, how pitiful!"

Lia Shimmer woke up, looking at the clock-it was 3:45 p.m.

After missing a flight to the U.S. due to illness and losing a job interview, she had to look for work domestically.

"Miss Shimmer, though your abilities are good, our company can't tolerate plagiarism. Please leave."

Recalling her company's recent discovery of her alleged plagiarism and her subsequent dismissal, Lia Shimmer bitterly smiled. Over the years, she'd lost countless jobs due to this scandal.

She checked her phone for job replies and saw a news headline: "Famous designer Sharon Frost wins abroad, attends award ceremony with husband Xander Yung, sharing a sweet kiss."

Seeing their elegantly dressed figures, Lia Shimmer felt irony. She had also entered this competition, but the organizers, learning of her alleged plagiarism of Sharon Frost, withdrew her entry without letting her participate. They were catering to Frost, and the results were rigged. Frost must be very pleased now.

Closing the news, Lia Shimmer found a job rejection: "Your portfolio is excellent, but it doesn't meet our requirements. Please try elsewhere."

Recognizing the sender's name, Lia Shimmer panicked. During her interview, the boss had shown interest in her designs.

She called back urgently, thinking it was a mistake. "Hello, is this Tianyu Decoration Company? I'm Lia Shimmer..."

"Sorry, Miss Shimmer, your portfolio didn't pass."

Before she could finish, she was coldly interrupted. Lia Shimmer was stunned. "Can you tell me why? You said my portfolio was good."

The HR manager paused, then sighed. "Miss Shimmer, your portfolio is outstanding, and we're very satisfied. However, did you plagiarize Miss Frost's work? She's our top domestic designer, and she is respected in the industry. She seems to dislike you, and we can't risk offending her by hiring you. Sorry..."

Sharon Frost again!

Even after two years, she still wouldn't let go, constantly targeting Lia Shimmer to drive her out of the design field. But this only proved Frost feared her. Lia Shimmer was determined to stay in the industry; she didn't believe Frost could suppress her forever!

Hearing a knock, Lia Shimmer thought it was her delivery and rushed to the door, hair tied up and in slippers.

But she froze at the sight of a man in a black suit with a cold, handsome face like a god. He was impeccably dressed, with a slim, athletic build, shiny shoes, and a limited-edition Cartier watch. His expensive clothes seemed ordinary to him.

Behind him stood several equally well-dressed, sunglasses-clad bodyguards, expressionless and stern, like spy elites from movies.

The man seemed familiar, but Lia Shimmer couldn't place him. She asked tentatively, "Are you looking for someone?"

An elderly man beside him, looking like a butler, handed her a card. "Miss Shimmer, we're from the Holt Group."

Holt Group? Lia Shimmer's eyebrows shot up. Why would they come to her? Had she offended someone important?

Then a child's voice chimed in: "Mommy, I'm back. Did you miss me today?"

Lia Shimmer looked down to see a small boy with features resembling the man's, a pale, chubby face like a crystal bun. But his call to her was shocking. Embarrassed, she whispered, "Little boy, you must have the wrong person."

Ignoring her, the child squeezed in and looked around the empty room without any children's items. He pouted sadly, "Mommy, in just one day, you threw away all my things..."

I died on a Tuesday. It wasn't a quick death. It was slow, cold, and meticulously planned by the man who called himself my father. I was twenty years old. He needed my kidney to save my sister. The spare part for the golden child. I remember the blinding lights of the operating theater, the sterile smell of betrayal, and the phantom pain of a surgeon's scalpel carving into my flesh while my screams echoed unheard. I remember looking through the observation glass and seeing him-my father, Giovanni Vitiello, the Don of the Chicago Outfit-watching me die with the same detached expression he used when signing a death warrant. He chose her. He always chose her. And then, I woke up. Not in heaven. Not in hell. But in my own bed, a year before my scheduled execution. My body was whole, unscarred. The timeline had reset, a glitch in the cruel matrix of my existence, giving me a second chance I never asked for. This time, when my father handed me a one-way ticket to London-an exile disguised as a severance package-I didn't cry. I didn't beg. My heart, once a bleeding wound, was now a block of ice. He didn't know he was talking to a ghost. He didn't know I had already lived through his ultimate betrayal. He also didn't know that six months ago, during the city's brutal territory wars, I was the one who saved his most valuable asset. In a secret safe house, I stitched up the wounds of a blinded soldier, a man whose life hung by a thread. He never saw my face. He only knew my voice, the scent of vanilla, and the steady touch of my hands. He called me Sette. Seven. For the seven stitches I put in his shoulder. That man was Dante Moretti. The Ruthless Capo. The man my sister, Isabella, is now set to marry. She stole my story. She claimed my actions, my voice, my scent. And Dante, the man who could spot a lie from a mile away, believed the beautiful deception because he wanted it to be true. He wanted the golden girl to be his savior, not the invisible sister who was only ever good for her spare parts. So I took the ticket. In my past life, I fought them, and they silenced me on an operating table. This time, I will let them have their perfect, gilded lie. I will go to London. I will disappear. I will let Seraphina Vitiello die on that plane. But I will not be a victim. This time, I will not be the lamb led to slaughter. This time, from the shadows of my exile, I will be the one holding the match. And I will wait, with the patience of the dead, to watch their entire world burn. Because a ghost has nothing to lose, and a queen of ashes has an empire to gain.
