Chapter 1 billionaire mistress

Susan's POV]

"I'm sorry, Susan. I just can't do this anymore..." Jack's words left me pale.

"What do you mean, Jack?" I asked, hoping to confirm what he had just told me.

"I can't disobey my parents, Susan. I'm sorry, but I tried. I'm really sorry; this couldn't work out..." he said, hanging up the call before I could even utter another word.

My grip loosened on my phone as it hit the ground, smashing into pieces. My legs gave way, crumbling down as the realization hit me.

"Jack just broke up with me. No, this can't be... No! I must be dreaming, right?" I mumbled, tears slowly flowing down my face.

My hands gathered the shattered pieces of the phone, trying to put them back together.

"No, it can't be. I have to call him. I have to call Jack; he can't do this... Why would he...?"

But what was I doing? The phone was already ruined. I shouldn't have thrown it in the first place. I'm sure Jack must have made a mistake, right? He must have...

"Susan Anderson!" A yell caught my attention, echoing around the room.

Managing a proper gaze, I caught sight of the CEO's secretary approaching me, accompanied by two of the company's bodyguards.

Her eyes met mine as I tried standing back up, but before I could even give a proper stance, I felt a sharp sting on my face, which almost caused me to stumble back. My hands covered my cheek.

"You bitch! You must think you're smart!" the secretary spat, glaring at me with disgust.

"What do you mean, Mrs. Smith?" I asked, only to witness her drawing out some newspaper which she flung at me, scattering through the air as one landed on my face.

Holding it up to check what was written there, my eyes widened in shock as my grip loosened, and the paper slipped from my fingers, fluttering down.

"Lovie Groups of Companies launched a new product called 'Mother's Love'," the caption read.

How is this possible? This can't be... Just how?

"You care to explain that, Susan? I must say I have suspected you right from the very day... Finally, I have proof," I heard the secretary say, a grin painting on her lips.

"But Mrs. Smith... How is this possible? How did they steal our idea?" I asked.

Lovie Group was our rival company, always trying to bring our company down, but seeing what read in the newspapers... They had just launched the product which was an idea I had created last week. How is this possible?

"Oh, so now you're just going to fake it, right? Yeah, you can't escape this one, surely. Has nobody told you that you're a bad actress? You're asking how they got the idea. Isn't it obvious? You sold it to them," she accused.

"Mrs. Smith, I didn't sell the idea to them. I can never do that," I insisted.

"Whatever. You're fired, Susan Anderson. I want you to pack your stuff and leave," she said as she turned to walk away.

"Please, Mrs. Smith... please. I can prove it. I didn't do such a thing. Why would..." I pleaded, the tears which had seized before now began to pour down my face. My vision blurred as I recalled the sting of the slap on my cheek, but I noticed a pause in her steps as her gaze turned back to me. A flicker of hope sparked within me. Maybe it wasn't over as I thought; maybe I still had a chance to keep my job. But the words that left the secretary's lips shattered the little hope I had.

"And yeah, what was I even saying? You don't have anything. All of your belongings, every single thing, are the company's property. And currently, you're trespassing. Guards, throw her out," she commanded. In that moment, I felt a grasp on my arm.

As one of the guards tightened his grip, forcing me forward.

"Please... no! Just please listen to me. Please hear me out, Mrs. Smith..." I pleaded, but my words seemed to have little effect. Each and every employee of the company glared at me as I was dragged towards the company doorstep, a forceful push from the bodyguard almost caused me to fall into the street. My hand wrapped around my stomach as I stumbled, scraping my hands against the ground.

"Hey, what do you think you're doing?!" A woman shouted, rushing to my aid to help me up as she scolded the bodyguard.

But that was not what I needed at that moment; she was only making things worse. I couldn't lose my job-it was the only livelihood I had.

"Are you alright, dear? I hope he didn't hurt you..." I heard the woman ask, but her words felt like a distant murmur to my ears. I didn't realize when I had gotten back on my feet. My legs trembled as I tried taking small steps. Glancing back at the company, I distanced myself further. It was already evening, with the sun set and the street turning dark.

My hands remained wrapped around my stomach, feeling a slight glimpse of pain. The doctor had just informed me yesterday that I was one month pregnant.

This was supposed to be a happy time, but why did it feel like my world was only crashing down even more? Was I really going to bring the baby into a world I couldn't hold together?

Why would Jack do this to me? His parents had never liked me from the very beginning; I had even heard his mother gossiping and saying horrible things about me.

But Jack was always there. He had always defended me, and now, after five years of being together, he said this. What about all the words, the hope? "Don't worry, Susan. Once I get this job, we'll get married and have a lovely family..." he had said, right? So, what happened all of a sudden?

I found myself standing at my house doorstep as I slowly made my way in.

The house only seemed to bring back memories of Jack and me-the lovely ones and the bad. Now, all that remained were the shattered pieces of our broken dreams. We had rented this house together and had even started saving money to buy our own. But yeah, that wasn't happening anymore now, was it?

Wiping the little tears that crumbled, I took the stairs as I approached my room, grasping the doorknob as I opened the door. Walking in, my gaze rose, but what I saw left me pale.

"Who... are you?" I questioned, catching sight of a lady laying on my and Jack's bed.

A creak from the bathroom door made me turn as I caught sight of Jack stepping out, a towel wrapped around his hips. His eyes met mine in an instant, and they widened.

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.

My stepmother sold me like a piece of inventory to a man known for breaking people just to plug the financial crater my father left behind. I was delivered to the Morton estate in the middle of a freezing storm, stripped of my phone, and told that if I didn't make myself useful, my senile grandfather would be evicted from his care facility by noon. The master of the house, Adonis Morton IV, was a monster living in a silent mausoleum, driven to the brink of madness by a sensory condition that turned every sound into a physical assault. When I was forced into his suite to serve him, he didn't see a human being; he saw a source of agony. In a fit of animalistic rage, he pinned me to the wall and nearly strangled me to death just for the sound of a shattering teacup. I only survived by using my grandfather’s secret herbal blends and pressure-point therapy to force his overactive nervous system into a drugged sleep. But saving him was my greatest mistake. Instead of letting me go, Adonis moved me into a guest suite connected to his own bedroom by a hidden door. He didn't just want me as a servant; he needed me as a human white-noise machine to drown out the demons in his head. The nightmare deepened when he took the promissory note that defined my freedom and tore it into confetti. By destroying the debt, he destroyed my exit strategy. He replaced my maid’s uniform with a silver silk dress that clung to my skin but did nothing to hide the dark, ugly bruises his fingers had left on my neck. He branded me as his "primary care associate," a title that was nothing more than a gilded cage. I felt a sickening sense of injustice as he forced me to sign a contract that banned me from contacting other men and required me to sleep wherever he slept. He looked at me with a possessive heat, calling me his "medication" rather than a woman. My family had sold my body, but Adonis Morton was intent on owning my very presence, using my grandfather’s medical bills as a leash to keep me within twenty feet of him at all times. Standing in a neglected greenhouse with mud staining my expensive silk, I realized I was no longer a victim waiting for rescue. If I was going to be his medication, I would learn how to be his cure—or his undoing. I began clearing the weeds with a cold, calculated frenzy, determined to turn this prison into my laboratory. He thinks he has trapped a helpless girl, but I am going to pry open the cracks in his stone walls until his entire world comes crashing down.
