Chapter 1 PROLOGUE – A GLIMPSE OF THEIR PAST WOUNDS AND EMOTIONAL WALLS

The rain pelted the black SUV's tinted windows in unrelenting torrents, a continuous rhythm. The city outside dissolved into neon streaks and shadows, reflecting the harsh, merciless world he had created for himself. Alexander Steele sat still in the backseat, his face's angular lines illuminated by the light from his phone. The message remained unsent while his fingers lingered over the screen.

"I'm proud of you, Dad."

The remarks seemed strange, even hollow, as though they were coming from a guy he had lost sight of. As he had done a dozen times before, he erased them. Pride? To a man who had come to understand that silence was a sign of strength, what was that? To a man forged in the merciless furnace of abandonment and treachery? No, Alexander Steele avoided using sentimental language. If his heart was still there, it was a fortress, impenetrable, protected by walls he had long since ceased to doubt. He was fashioned by the walls.

It was the ninth anniversary of his father's passing tonight. A man who had insisted on complete perfection but never on love. He left behind wealth, influence, and an uncompromising ideal that Alexander both despised and aspired to. It was in his blood, cold steel.

However, for some reason, the silence felt more oppressive and a little stifling tonight.

Another storm was brewing across the Atlantic.

The smell of rain mixed with gun oil and wet ground as Captain Isabella "Ice" Reyes stood at the edge of the tarmac of the military base. Her thoughts were elsewhere, transported back to a long-forgotten memory, even as the noise of distant helicopters reverberated across the bleak sky. One that now characterized her existence.

It was twelve years ago. The funeral.

The folded flag was pushed into her hands, which were shaking.

Her mom's tears.

"You have to be strong now, Bella."

So she had been. Her armor was strength. She was the strongest soldier in her unit because of her cold accuracy, discipline, and control. The woman who never felt or flinched. Never let anyone know there were cracks beneath the ice, much less go close enough to notice them.

But occasionally, in the quiet between missions, late at night, she sensed it-the pain. The defeat. The crushing burden of being completely alone and indestructible.

It was one of those evenings tonight.

In her locker was an unopened letter. from her father, with whom she had not communicated for years. The man who had left long before she had mastered the art of deadly grace with a weapon. He had made an effort to connect, to clarify. He had gone unnoticed.

Forgiveness was a sign of weakness. And she wasn't feeble at all.

Two spirits. Two steel fortresses.

Despite being in different worlds, they are united by the same unwavering coldness.

Neither was aware that fate was already slipping between their armor's cracks.

Sparks would fly when they collided, and neither could predict when it would happen.

However, steel is difficult to bend once it has been forged.

And affection? The last thing either of them was ready to fight over was love.

"You're a creepy bastard." His eyes smolder me and his answering grin is nothing short of beautiful. Deadly. "Yet you hunger for me. Tell me, this appetite of yours, does it always tend toward 'creepy bastards'?" **** Widower and ex-boss to the Mafia, Zefiro Della Rocca, has an unhealthy fixation on the woman nextdoor. It began as a coincidence, growing into mere curiosity, and soon, it was an itch he couldn't ignore, like a quick fix of crack for an addict. He didn't know her name, but he knew every inch of her skin, how it flushed when she climaxed, her favourite novel and that every night she contemplated suicide. He didn't want to care, despising his rapt fascination of the woman. She was in love with her abusive husband. She was married, bound by a contract to the Bratva's hitman. She was off-limits. But when Zefiro wanted something, it was with an intensity that bordered on madness. He obsessed, possessed, owned. There'd be bloodshed if he touched her, but the sight of blood always did fascinate him. * When Susanna flees from her husband, she stumbles right into the arms of her devilishly handsome neighbour with a brooding glare. He couldn't stand her, but she needed him, if she was ever going to escape her husband who now wanted her dead. Better the devil you know than the angel you don't. She should have recalled that before hopping into Zefiro's car and letting him whisk her away to Italy. Maybe then, she wouldn't have started an affair with him. He was the only man who touched her right, and the crazy man took no small pains in ensuring he would be the last.

Elodie took a deep breath and knocked, the sound echoing in the quiet corridor. A moment of silence passed, broken only by the pounding of her heart. Finally, the door snicked open, revealing a surprised Dashiell. 'Can't you see the Do Not Disturb sign? We don't want-' His initial frown quickly morphed into confusion at the sight of his wife. 'What are you doing here?' he demanded. 'Your girlfriend invited me,' Elodie replied, her voice laced with icy calm. She tried to peer past him, but his broad frame blocked the view. A saccharine voice chimed in from within the room. 'Elodie? Oh dear, we didn't mean for you to find out this way. It's just that-' Elodie cut her short. 'Oh please, Selene. Spare me the fake apologies. You wouldn't have sent me all those texts if you didn't want me to know.' Dashiell shifted uncomfortably, his face a mask of annoyance. 'What texts?' Elodie stepped past him, taking in the luxurious suite with a sardonic smile. The king-sized bed, the scattered rose petals, the lingering scent of sex – it all painted a vivid picture of their betrayal. She looked up at Dashiell, her gaze unwavering. 'I want a divorce.' ****** Dashiell lived a life of luxury, surrounded by the best things money could buy. But when a car accident left him vulnerable, he met Elodie, a seemingly ordinary woman who nursed him back to health. Mistaking her for just another employee, Dashiell entered into a loveless marriage with her solely for convenience. However, fate had a different script in store. Elodie, the 'ordinary nurse,' held a secret more precious than any diamond: she was the sole heiress to Northstar, a vast and powerful enterprise. Unaware of her true identity, Dashiell cast her aside when his ex-girlfriend returned, leaving Elodie humiliated. But Elodie was not one to be easily broken. She shed the facade of the meek nurse, reclaiming her rightful inheritance and stepping into the role of Northstar's CEO. Now, the woman Dashiell discarded was the one holding the reins of power. As Elodie thrives in her new role, Dashiell is consumed by regret. He finally sees Elodie for the extraordinary woman she truly is, realising the depth of his mistake. But will his remorse be enough to win back the heart he so carelessly discarded?
