The harsh truth of her situation struck her like a physical blow as she stared at the exiting take note in her shaking palms. She was drowning in debt after her parents' unexpected death, and the weight of their unpaid debts was dragging her down.Marie had always been a fighter, an independent young woman who had never asked for gifts. However, the prospects were unthinkable this time. Her employment barely covered her basic requirements, her reserve monies were exhausted, and she had exhausted all of her options. Hope was beginning to eat her as the day for her removal drew near.In a moment of panic, Marie remembered a conversation she had overheard at a café many weeks before. Two women were discussing the Stones, a wealthy family notorious for their erratic behaviour and tendency to hire flighty employees. One of the women had mentioned an unusual job opportunity at the Stone home, one that seemed to be perfect for someone like Marie.Marie decided to take a risk, a glimmer of optimism flashing in her eyes. She put on her best clothes, her pulse pounding with a mixture of fear and confidence. Some time ago, the imposing façade of the Stone chateau remained, its splendour a sharp contrast to her claimed little dwelling.Marie took a deep breath and pressed the doorbell. The door creaked open, revealing a grim-faced butler who looked doubtfully at her. His voice was clipped as he said, "May I assist you?"Marie swallowed her panic and explained why in a startlingly steady voice. She handed him the old clipping from the daily paper that advertised the job. "I am here for the work opening," she stated. With a jumbled look, the butler examined the clipping closely. Finally, he murmured, "Take after me," and he led her inside the opulent home. Marie entered a magnificent hall that was adorned with priceless artwork, marble flooring, and chandeliers made of gems. The conversation was filled with the aroma of wealth and advantage, a world that was not part of her own life.Suddenly, a woman appeared at the top of a cleared stairway. She was the epitome of modernism, tall and beautiful, with piercing blue eyes and a demeanour of cold calm. This was Mrs. Stone, the family's formidable matriarch.Mrs. Stone remarked, "You must be Marie," in a tone as icy as her appearance. "I have been anticipating you."Despite the shiver that went down her spine, Marie kept her head up. It was "Yes, Mrs. Stone," she said. "I am here approximately the work opening."Mrs. Stone's eyes narrowed as she thought about her for a minute. She remarked, "I am not beyond any doubt you are very what I had in intellect," in a question-bound voice.Although Marie's heart sunk, she refused to give up. She countered, "Mrs. Stone, I am a quick learner." "I am willing to work difficult and do anything it takes to succeed."Mrs. Stone's face softened a little. When she said, "Exceptionally well," "Marie, let me know if you are open to making a deal."Marie felt her heart pounding against her ribs like a drum. A good deal? What kind of deal could this woman possibly provide her? Mrs. Stone's lips curled into a subtle smile, hinting at something vicious behind her pristine exterior."My child, John," said Mrs. Stone, her voice fading to a whisper of conspiracy, "may be a bright man, a successful businessman." But he has a deadly flaw," she said, stopping, her gaze hardening. He is not interested in women, marriage, or starting a family. Marie frowned, unsure of the direction this was taking. "I am too bad to listen that, Mrs. Stone," she murmured, "but I do not see how-"Mrs. Stone interrupted, her voice regaining its abrasive edge. "Let me wrap up, expensive," she said. "I am desperate for grandkids, as is my hubby. We hope that our family bequest will continue. However, John is undermining our mutual trust because of his cold heart and unwavering reluctance to settle down."She leaned in closer, her gaze firm. "Marie, this may be your chance to help. We acknowledge that you have the power to change all of that.Marie's confusion grew. She stumbled, "I... I do not get it," she said.Mrs. Stone said bluntly, "We want you to entice my child," her words reverberating around the conversation like a thunderclap.Marie's cheeks became scarlet red as she gasped. With just a murmur in her voice, she said, "Tempt him?" "But I... I am fair a secretary."Mrs. Stone gestured with an arrogant hand. "Details, details. Marie, we are going to transform you. We will provide you with the best attire, the best training, and the most talented mentors. We are going to mould you into the kind of woman who can win John over."Marie's mind whirled. This was an idea from a story, franticness. But a desperate voice within her said that this may be her rescue, an opportunity to escape poverty and save her future. She said, her voice shaking, "What is in it for me?"Mrs. Stone grinned, her eyes glimmering with victory. "Marie, we will settle all of your debts. We will provide you a generous salary, a cosy loft, and an extravagant lifestyle beyond your wildest expectations. Additionally, you could get compensation beyond your degree if you are successful in marrying John and making him a beneficiary.Marie's mind raced, balancing the risks and the possible profits. This was a risky distraction, a wager with her soul and emotions. However, the elective-a life of vulnerability and poverty-was just as intimidating. She murmured, "I... I require time to think," in a voice that was almost audible.Mrs. Stone waved, her smile wide. "Expensive, of course. Take as much time as you need. Remember, however, that this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Do not allow it to escape your grasp. The weight of the offer turned Marie's head as she walked hypnotically out of the Stone home. Although the rain had stopped, she was still experiencing a raging tempest of emotions. Was she really prepared to give the devil her soul in exchange for the possibility of a better life?
