Chapter 1 The Accident

**THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT

TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2004.

5:00PM

"What do you guys think about this one?" Julie sauntered out of her closet as she twirled in her knee length blue dress.

She and the girls were going for a party-it was more like they were sneaking out but still-it was a school night and she knew her parents would never allow her to go.

It was the biggest party of the school year before they finally became seniors and there was no way she was going to miss it.

Julie giggled as her friends scrutinized her dressing, feeling the fabric and checking if it was 'party worthy.'

"Cute but not revealing enough." Tracy said as she helped herself into Julie's walk in closet. She gawked at the spacious room, she would never be able to get over the size of the room, the wealth of her friend couldn't be overemphasized.

Clothes were lined up neatly and shoes decorated everywhere, Julie was living the dream.

"Close your mouth, you look like a fish." Another girl taunted as she entered the closet causing the others to laugh.

Tracy threw them playful angry looks as she rummaged through the rows of clothes, looking for the perfect party dress.

Who wouldn't stare when they walk in? They all did the first time they saw it.

"Found it." Tracy squealed as she drew out a short pink gown that would barely covered her back.

"Try it on." Tracy shoved the dress in her hand before she could complete her sentence. They all looked at her as she unzipped the previous dress, their eyes fixed on her with eagerness.

"Are you guys going to stand there and just stare?" She covered her breasts with her hands as she broke eye contact. She was always the shy type.

"Come on, it's nothing we haven't seen before." Norah groaned, pulling her hair in frustration. They just wanted to see how the dress looked on her.

Besides, weren't they all girls?

Julie shook her head furiously and refused to go any further till they'd all left. Exasperated, the three girls left the closet, murmuring inaudible words.

Quickly putting on the cloth, Julie rushed out, a huge grin to her face.

Gasps and giggles erupted from them as they admired the dress on her body. It revealed a little too much of her cleavage, but that was the point.

Tracy stood up from the bed, her eyes sparkling as she clapped her hands. "Julie, this is the one. Ryan is going to beg you to have him back."

8:00PM

The girls had reached the club and they were partying wild. The place bubbled with music as different colors of lights illuminated the darkish room.

The smell of alcohol and weed filled the air, and the heat that came from the sweaty bodies couldn't be ignored.

Julie was having the time of her life. From the alcohol to the vape to molly, it was all too good. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had so much fun.

And it would have been much better if Ryan would just let her be.

"I told you it's over, what else is there?" Her words slurred, she was clearly intoxicated by the alcohol, plus the drugs seemed to be taking effect faster than usual.

"Babe I just want to talk, I'm sorry okay?" Ryan grabbed her hands, preventing her from doing any other thing. All he wanted to do was talk, and maybe have a taste of her?

Julie laughed hysterically and she wasn't sure if it was his words or the molly in her system. Perhaps it was something else?

"You're sorry?" She wiggled her hand free and poked him on the chest.

"You cheated and you think sorry is going to fix that? And this isn't even the first! How long has it been going on?" She asked, her words wobbly.

She had given him everything, yet this was her payment? She shuld have listened to her friends the first time.

When Ryan didn't answer, she snorted and yanked herself away from him. They were all the same. "You disgust me." she sneered.

Just as she was about to walk away, he drew her back again. "Julie." He growled, his voice a little too loud. People were beginning to stare at them.

"Leave me alone." She frowned and struggled to set herself free. His hold tightened on her wrist making it even more difficult.

"You're hurting me." She winced

"I'm talking to you Julie, you don't walk away when I am talking to you."

Julie scoffed. She was beginning to be aware of her surroundings, Ryan's talk was making her sober.

"I told you, I took care of Cara. She won't come between us anymore, it's you I want." Ryan drew her closer. He held her face as he leaned in a flimsy attempt to kiss her.

Revolted by his action, she kneed him in the groin. He pushed her and she stumbled back, she felt light headed as she tried to stabilize herself.

"You stupid bitc-"

"Hey!" A tall lean guy interrupted. He stood between them as he eyed Ryan, his hands stretched to the back like he was protecting Julie.

She smiled at the gesture, she liked it.

"Can't you take a hint? She. Doesn't. Want. You. Touching. Her." He simpered, his round eyes as cold as ever. His words enlaced with disgust.

She had clearly said no, so why was he still forcing himself on her?

Ryan glowered angrily at the unknown guy. Who did he think he was? He was trying to have a 'civilized' conversation with his girlfriend.

"Hey dude, she's my girlfriend, okay?"

"Ex-girlfriend." He heard Julie corrected from behind the tall guy and his rage heightened.

"She's my girlfriend and we're just talking."

The strange guy glanced behind him, he noticed the way Julie clutched to his shirt and he wondered if they were really just 'talking.'

Looking back at Ryan, he narrowed his eyes at him. This was a college party so what were two high schoolers doing here?

"She doesn't want to talk." He air quoted the last word. "Now get out before I throw you out myself."

Angry he wasn't able to get what he wanted, he hissed and glared at her furiously, his mouth twitching. Had he roofied her drink for nothing?

"This is not over." Ryan grumbled and without a second, he was gone.

Julie raised her head as he wanted to take a look at the person who had just saved her. She squinted, still the face was blurry and she felt dizzy.

Was molly supposed to give her this feeling? This was her first time taking it.

"You saved...what's your..." She could barely make a complete sentence as she swayed, thankfully he was there to keep her still.

"Let's get you somewhere safe." She muttered, then carried her bridal style as his eyes searched the club for a place she could relax.

Seeing her here was the least thing he expected. He was sure she had snuck out because there was no way her parents would have allowed come to a party like this

He peered down at her soft features, only if she knew him.

"Julie!" Shrieks of young girls were heard and immediately they headed at him.

"Oh girl, we've been looking for you." Tracy said as she helped her stand just as the guy dropped her. "Let's get you home."

They all murmured a thank you and dragged their drunk friend home.

He just stood there, a smile etched on his lips as he watched her turn around and waved goodbye to him.

10:39 PM

"You promised you won't get drunk! How do you sneak back in now?" Norah whined as she tried to keep Julie still in the moving car. "Tracy, can you take it easy? Your driving isn't good."

Tracy snickered.

"What do you mean by my driving isn't good? I'm just a little tipsy, that's all."

Norah face-palmed herself as they continued, was she the only responsible one present?

"I think that guy likes you." Tracy giggled, nudging a half sleeping Julie.

"He does?" She drawled.

"You don't even know him" They both heard Norah groan irritably at the back which made them giggled even more.

"You don't have to." Tracy dragged on, "He's cute and that's what matters." She giggled again and turned on the music.

As the music played on, Tracy distracted, drifted across the centerline, laughing and singing along.

Just then, headlights of an incoming truck flooded into the car, blinding them for a split second.

Tracy panicked as she pressed the car horn, alerting the driver as she found it hard to move of the road.

But nothing happened. Instead the truck increased its speed. Everyone in the car shook with fear.

Was this their end?

Julie grew pale at the vehicle coming right at them. Her eyes now devoid of sleep, she was sober and screaming.

"Tracy!" Norah screamed and the tires screeched as Tracy tried to avoid the car, but it was too late.

The car spinned out of control, skidding across the road before slamming sideways into a large tree with a thunderous crash.
