Chapter 1 A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL

Isabella Gray stood at the sprawling ballroom, her heart beating like a drum. The shiny chandeliers above revealed shiny on the dressed crowd, their laughter all over. She adjusted her dress, the only one she had that matched the event. But no matter how much she tried to feel among, she felt like an outsider.

She folded her fists, the business proposal in her hand now crumpled slightly at the edges. This was her only chance to save the family business her late father had built from scratch. The Gray family legacy had been her lifeline, her purpose. But years of financial mismanagement after her father's death had left it unsteady on the edge of poverty.

She looked around the room, finally seeing her target, Ethan Hawthorne.

He stood by the main windows, tall and clean, with a composure of authority that made the crowd move around him. His dark suit was tailored to perfection, and his c features seemed carved from stone. But it was his eyes cold, piercing, and unreadable that sent an unpleasant feeling down her spine. This was a man who used power like a weapon, a man who could make or break lives with a single word.

Isabella hesitated. Every fiber of her being screamed at her to turn around and leave, to spare herself the humiliation of approaching a man like Ethan. But the thought of her family's factory doors closing for good gave her the courage to move forward. She took a deep breath and stepped into his world.

"Mr. Hawthorne?" Her voice came out steadier than she'd expected.

Ethan turned, his eyes flickering over her with a mixture of curiosity and indifference. "Yes?"

"I'm Isabella Gray," she began, holding out her hand. "I run Gray Enterprises. I was hoping I could have a moment of your time to discuss a potential partnership."

He didn't take her hand. Instead, he adjusted his head gently, studying her like she was some kind of game. The silence stretched uncomfortably, and Isabella fought the urge to fidget under his gaze.

"I've heard of your company," he said finally. "Small, family-owned. Struggling to stay afloat, if I'm not mistaken."

The bluntness of his words stung, but she forced a smile. "That is why I am here. I believe that with your resources and our business, we could create something beneficial."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "And why should I invest in that?"

Her cheeks thrilled, but she refused to back down. "Because I believe in what we do. Gray Enterprises has been an influence to this community for years. We don't just manufacture; we build. We create jobs, opportunities. And with your help, we can do much more."

For a moment, Ethan said nothing. Then, to her surprise, a small smile glim at the corner of his mouth. It was warm it was sharp, calculated.

you are bold, I'll give you that, he said. But boldness alone does not make a good investment.

Agony came up in her chest. "I am not asking for charity, Mr Hawthorne. I'm asking for a chance. Give me fifteen minutes to present my proposal. If you're not interested, I would leave, and you'll never hear from me again."

Ethan watched her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he gestured toward a side door leading to a quieter lounge. "Fifteen minutes. No more."

Relief flooded her, but it was short lived. She knew the hardest part was yet to come.

As she followed him into the lounge, Isabella could not shake the feeling that she was scared . And Ethan Hawthorne was her fear, watching her every move, waiting to see if she was worth it.

This was not just business. This was survival. And she couldn't afford to lose.
