As Sarah's pregnancy and plans to escape unravel, she discovers a way out with the surprising return of a man thought lost forever. But can she escape the cage they've built around her, or is it too late?

Romantic Homicide Chapter 1 THE UNWELCOME

Sarah was seated at the edge of the bed, with her hand protectively placed on her stomach. The results were obvious - two strong lines indicating her pregnancy. A new life was growing within her, a tiny spark of hope in her otherwise complicated world. She'd imagined Jake's reaction countless times: the joy in his eyes, the embrace they'd share as they looked toward their future as a family. This news was her lifeline, a bridge to the happiness she'd been dreaming of since marrying Jake.

But, as if on cue, a familiar figure interrupted her thoughts-Isabel, her sister-in-law, who seemed to have no boundaries when it came to intruding on Sarah's life.

The news of Alex's plane crash had left Jake distraught, and somehow, that pain had bonded him with Isabel. Day after day, she was at their home, her grief-filled expressions, subtle touches, and lingering looks at Jake filling the space that should have been Sarah's. It wasn't just the loss of his brother, it seemed, but the presence of Isabel that had transformed her marriage into something unrecognizable.

Today, Isabel came with an announcement of her own, revealing her pregnancy with a coy smile that left Sarah feeling as if the ground had disappeared beneath her feet. Jake's response to Isabel's news only deepened the growing emptiness in Sarah's heart. Instead of comforting her or even acknowledging her presence, Jake turned all his attention to Isabel, wrapping her in a warm hug, and offering words of comfort and support. His eyes sparkled with a tenderness Sarah hadn't seen in a long time, and it left her feeling invisible.

The days that followed were suffocating for Sarah. Isabel, now officially a fixture in their home, began to manipulate every situation to her advantage. Pretending to be helpless and frail due to her pregnancy, she demanded Sarah's constant attention, insisting on having special meals and sending Sarah on endless errands. All while smiling sweetly at Jake, her gaze daring Sarah to protest. Sarah was losing her patience, but she remained composed, wishing that Jake would recognize her distress and offer his support.

One night, Sarah made a lovely fruit platter for Isabel, aiming to alleviate the escalating tension with a simple gesture of kindness. With precision, she arranged slices of mango, strawberries, and apples, then drizzled honey and added fresh mint leaves. Walking into the living room with the tray, Isabel looked at her with a smirk, her eyes cold and calculating.

Isabel expressed gratitude to Sarah in a sweet manner before taking the tray. However, just as Sarah was about to reply, Isabel purposely knocked the tray out of her hands, causing fruit and broken glass to scatter on the floor.

Isabel gave a dramatic scream, grasping her stomach and widening her eyes in fake surprise. Jake! Hey there, Jake! "Jake, please assist!" she cried, collapsing onto the couch in a well-rehearsed swoon.

Jake dashed in, his expression contorted with worry. "Isabel!" "Are you doing alright?" He had all his attention on her, his hands shielding her as he gave Sarah a fierce look. "Tell me, what have you done?" he asked, his voice filled with blame.

Sarah started to speak to explain, but Jake interrupted before she could respond. His icy tone snapped when he mentioned that Isabel could have been injured. "Are you not able to recognize that she is delicate at the moment?"

Biting her lip, she looked down, trying to control her emotions. While she moved, the intense pain of glass stabbing her palm caused a small amount of blood to run down her hand. Even though Sarah was injured, Jake's focus was solely on Isabel, ignoring Sarah's suffering.

Without another word, Sarah slipped away, her injured hand cradled against her chest. Her heart ached with a pain deeper than the cut, feeling more wounded by her husband's indifference than by the glass. She managed to bandage her hand herself and decided to go to the hospital, not just for the injury but because she needed some space to breathe.

In the hospital, Sarah's emotions swirled into a tumult of betrayal and sorrow in her mind. Her mind wandered back to the life she had imagined with Jake, the future she had longed for deeply. However, it appeared that Isabel was pushing Jake away more and more each day, leaving no space for Sarah in their marriage.

A nurse entered the room and gently wrapped Sarah's hand, providing a brief sense of solace. "Things like that can happen," the nurse said with compassion, unaware of the profound pain Sarah was truly feeling. Sarah mustered a faint smile, her eyes revealing the loneliness she was experiencing.

While waiting for the discharge papers, she glanced at her phone, wishing to find a message or missed call from Jake. However, there was nothing displayed on the screen. Realizing he hadn't even noticed her absence made her heart sink. It seemed as if she was an apparition, gliding quietly through the existence she had previously believed belonged to her.

Upon returning home, she discovered Jake and Isabel having a peaceful moment together, their heads leaning in close while conversing softly. She coughed lightly, disrupting the enchantment that appeared to be holding them together.

"Welcome back," Jake mumbled, barely looking at her. He looked at Isabel again, not paying attention to the bandage on Sarah's hand or the slight bruises under her eyes. She wished to shout, to insist that he acknowledge her, to inform him about their child - their child who should be cherished, to have a father who was concerned. However, as Isabel's eyes connected with hers, the words she was about to say faded away, replaced by a subtle smile of contentment on Isabel's lips.

That evening, Sarah remained in bed, gazing at the ceiling, feeling increasingly isolated. She reflected on the life developing within her, and on the optimism she had previously held for their upcoming days. However, that hope seemed delicate now, vulnerable to breaking with one thoughtless remark from Jake. Her thoughts became more burdensome, her mind constantly returning to Isabel and the influence she held over Jake.

While drifting off to sleep, Sarah was certain that things could not go on as they were. She was faced with a decision: either defend her position in the marriage or leave, considering her unborn child and her well-being. In any case, it would involve facing the shadows Isabel had created in her life and revealing the truth about Jake's faithfulness.

The first steps of that journey, Sarah knew, would be the hardest, but she couldn't stay silent any longer. Tomorrow, she'd confront Jake about their future, about her place in his life. And, perhaps, she'd begin to unravel the web that Isabel had spun around them all.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
