Chapter 1 The Darkness Awakens

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the empty room.

"You lied to me!" Clara shouted, her voice trembling with anger. She stood in the dim light, her hands clenched into fists. Her heart raced as she stared at Adrian, the man she thought was her mate-the one who was supposed to love her forever.

Adrian's expression was cold, his piercing gray eyes locked onto hers. "I didn't lie," he said calmly, his voice as sharp as a blade. "I just didn't tell you everything."

"Everything?" Clara repeated, her voice breaking. She pointed to the broken pieces of the vase on the floor. "You killed my trust, Adrian! You said we were meant to be, that you were my mate. And now you're telling me that wasn't true?"

Adrian ran a hand through his dark hair, sighing heavily. "I thought I could make it work. But I can't, Clara. You're not my fated mate."

The words hit her like a punch to the stomach. Clara staggered back, her chest tightening. "You... you're rejecting me?"

He looked away, unable to meet her gaze. "Yes."

For a moment, silence filled the room, broken only by the sound of Clara's shaky breathing. She felt as if the ground beneath her feet was crumbling. Fated mates were supposed to be forever, a bond unbreakable by time or distance. And yet here she was, being thrown away like she meant nothing.

"You're a coward," Clara whispered, her voice laced with bitterness.

Adrian's jaw tightened, but he didn't argue. Instead, he turned toward the door. "It's better this way. Goodbye, Clara."

She watched as he walked away, her vision blurred with tears. The sound of the door closing behind him echoed in her mind like a final goodbye.

Clara sank to her knees, her body shaking as the weight of rejection pressed down on her. How could this happen? How could her mate-a man she trusted, a man she loved-leave her like this?

The silence of the room was deafening. But then, a voice broke through.

"So, he's gone, is he?"

Clara's head snapped up. Standing in the doorway was a man she didn't recognize. He leaned casually against the frame, a smirk playing on his lips. His dark, golden-brown hair caught the faint light, and his amber eyes glinted with amusement.

"Who are you?" Clara demanded, quickly wiping her tears.

The man stepped into the room, his movements slow and deliberate, like a predator stalking its prey. "Lucian," he said simply. "And you must be Clara. Adrian's little... mistake."

Her eyes narrowed. "I don't know who you are, but you have no right to be here."

Lucian chuckled, his deep voice sending a shiver down her spine. "Oh, I have every right. You see, Adrian and I have a bit of history. And let's just say, I've been waiting for this moment."

Clara stood, her legs unsteady but her glare unwavering. "What do you want from me?"

"Me?" Lucian tilted his head, pretending to think. "I don't want anything from you. But I do want to offer you something."

She crossed her arms, trying to mask her fear with defiance. "And what's that?"

"A chance," Lucian said, his smirk fading into something more serious. "A chance to show Adrian what he's lost. A chance to rise from the ashes he left you in."

Clara frowned, suspicion flickering in her eyes. "Why would you help me? You don't even know me."

Lucian stepped closer, his gaze intense. "Let's just say I have my reasons. Adrian thinks he can walk away from you without consequences. I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen."

His words sent a thrill of both fear and curiosity through her. Clara didn't trust him-not yet-but there was something about Lucian that made her want to listen.

Before she could respond, a loud crash came from outside the house. The sound was followed by a low growl, deep and menacing.

"What was that?" Clara asked, her heart pounding.

Lucian's expression darkened. "Stay here."

"No way," she said, following him as he moved toward the door.

They stepped outside into the cool night air. The moon hung low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the empty street. Clara's breath caught when she saw the source of the noise.

A massive, shadowy figure stood at the edge of the yard, its glowing red eyes locked onto them. Its body was twisted and grotesque, like a nightmare brought to life.

"What is that thing?" Clara whispered, her voice barely audible.

Lucian didn't answer. Instead, he stepped in front of her, his posture protective. "Stay behind me," he ordered.

The creature let out a guttural roar, its claws digging into the ground as it charged toward them.

"Get back!" Lucian shouted, pushing Clara behind him.

But Clara couldn't move. She was frozen, her eyes glued to the horrifying beast.

Lucian raised his hand, and to her shock, a burst of golden light shot from his palm, slamming into the creature and sending it flying backward. The force of the attack shook the ground, and the air crackled with energy.

Clara stared at him, her mouth open in disbelief. "What... what are you?"

Lucian glanced over his shoulder, his amber eyes glowing faintly. "Someone you're going to need if you want to survive."

Before she could process his words, the creature roared again, this time joined by the sound of more growls coming from the darkness.

"There's more of them," Lucian said grimly. "We need to move."

Clara's mind raced. She didn't know who Lucian was or what he wanted, but one thing was clear-her world was far more dangerous than she'd ever imagined.

As Lucian grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the house, she couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever.

And somewhere in the back of her mind, a single thought echoed: *Adrian may have left her, but her story was far from over.

"Let's get married," Mia declares, her voice trembling despite her defiant gaze into Stefan's guarded brown eyes. She needs this, even if he seems untouchable. Stefan raises a skeptical brow. "And why would I do that?" His voice was low, like a warning, and it made her shiver even though she tried not to show it. "We both have one thing in common," Mia continues, her gaze unwavering. "Shitty fathers. They want to take what's ours and give it to who they think deserves it." A pointed pause hangs in the air. "The only difference between us is that you're an illegitimate child, and I'm not." Stefan studies her, the heiress in her designer armor, the fire in her eyes that matches the burn of his own rage. "That's your solution? A wedding band as a weapon?" He said ignoring the part where she just referred to him as an illegitimate child. "The only weapon they won't see coming." She steps closer, close enough for him to catch the scent of her perfume, gunpowder and jasmine. "Our fathers stole our birthrights. The sole reason they betrayed us. We join forces, create our own empire that'll bring down theirs." A beat of silence. Then, Stefan's mouth curves into something sharp. "One condition," he murmurs, closing the distance. "No divorces. No surrenders. If we're doing this, it's for life" "Deal" Mia said without missing a beat. Her father wants to destroy her life. She wouldn't give him the pleasure, she would destroy her life as she seems fit. ................ Two shattered heirs. One deadly vow. A marriage built on revenge. Mia Meyers was born to rule her father's empire (so she thought), until he named his bastard son heir instead. Stefan Sterling knows the sting of betrayal too. His father discarded him like trash.
