Chapter 1 MY MUM'S ARROGANT BOSS

The doorbell rang so loud disturbing Luca's peaceful sleep, he reluctantly stood up from the bed;

" Oh God! Who is that ringing that doorbell? I'm not expecting anyone, even if I am expecting someone, not this early. Wait, the only person who comes to my house this early is that cleaner, but she knows the code to the door. God! Heaven will make a loss today if I find out she's the one ringing that bell; she will tell me if she has amnesia and has suddenly forgotten the code." He said angrily, and stormed out of the room thinking it was Catherine at the door.

He walked hurriedly through the stairs, and went straight to the door;

" Good morning sir." The young lady at the door greeted them immediately after he opened the door.

" Who are you, and what are you doing in my house? Who let you in the first place?" Luca asked, looking around.

" One of your guards did, my mom called him before I got here." The lady explained.

" I don't get it, young lady, what are you doing in my house? I don't welcome beggars in here, so I don't know who your mother is or how she got my guard's contact; that guy should just consider himself jobless already because I don't know why he would allow a poverty-stricken bitch like you in here. I ask for the last time before I call the cops on you, who are you?" Luca asked angrily.

" Well, my name is Pearl, I'm... ... ... ... ... ... ..."

" I didn't ask for your name because there's nothing I want to do with that piece of information. Just go straight to the point and tell me who you are because I'm losing it already, and trust me, you wouldn't want me to unleash my anger on you. First, you disrupted my sleep, and now you're acting all dumb just to answer a simple question?" Luca said furiously, interrupting Pearl.

" Well, I was about to tell you who I am before you interrupted me rudely," Pearl said firmly, sounding angry.

" Wait a minute, did you just call me rude? You walked into my house, and the next word that comes out of that poverty-stricken mouth of yours is 'rude'. Are you mentally deranged?" Luca said furiously.

" I told my mum that it was a bad idea coming here in the first place, I told her that there was no way I could tolerate the rubbish she tolerates from you. I've heard a lot about you Mr. Rich, Arrogant, Mean, and Condescending Boss. My mum was right anyway, can you imagine? Already trying to boss me around even when I haven't started working with him. Just you so know, my mum is Catherine, I'm sure that name doesn't ring a bell, I even doubt if you know the name of your workers because I learnt that you don't address your workers by their names, you address them by what they do for you, for example, you always call my mum 'cleaner'. Anyways, she had a minor accident yesterday, on her way back from work, here obviously. She has been trying to reach out to you, but you've been ignoring her calls; she sent me here to come stand in for her till she gets better or, let's say, back on her feet." Pearl said firmly, looking at Luca with contempt.

" Wow! It's your audacity for me, you know? You walked into my house to insult me telling me how you've heard so much about me from that gossip you call a mother. So she asked to come stand in for her without informing me first?." Luca said, looking so angry.

" I'm sure you're not deaf; you can hear clearly because the last time I checked, my mum never included that in your personality traits to me. Why did you omit the part where I said she has been calling you, but you've been ignoring her calls," Pearl said rudely.

" Oh my God! This girl is mentally deranged, you're sick in the brain. Do you know who I am? Nobody talks when I'm talking, and nobody dares talk back at me; even your good-for-nothing mother wouldn't even dare me. But here you are, on my doorstep after disrupting my peaceful sleep, still spewing nonsense out of your mouth. Do you dare challenge me? I'm sure you have an idea of what I'm capable of, obviously, you don't because if you do, you wouldn't mess with me, even your mother who sent you here knows how terrible of a person that I am, and I'm sure that she must have warned you, but you wanna show that you are a heroine, right? Well done, mummy's warrior. But you know what, I won't do anything nasty to you because I woke up from the better side of the bed even though your poverty-stricken self disrupted my sleep; in other words, I'll let this slide. So leave my house, go and tell your mother that she's fired, her services are no longer needed. So, get out of my house!" Luca yelled.

" Finally, my mum will have peace of mind, and nobody will say condescending words to her anymore. I've always told her to quit this job anyway, but she kept saying she could never find a job that would pay her so well like this. She even complimented the job, saying that the pay is more than the job. Forgetting that, she's been paid so well because she works so hard and also receives insults at the end; I see that excess pay as compensation for the insults she receives alongside the job. Mr. Luca, it was nice meeting you, and finally giving you my piece of mind. Excuse me." Pearl said, turning to take her leave.

" Well, your disrespect just cost your wretched mother her well-paying job, as you called it," Luca said after her.

Soon, a car drove into the compound, flashing its lights on Pearl like a sign telling someone to wait.

" Who's this person?" Pearl thought to herself, looking confused.

" Oh God! Not again!" Luca yelled, smacking his head.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

For four years, I traced the bullet scar on Chace’s chest, believing it was proof he would bleed to keep me safe. On our anniversary, he told me to wear white because "tonight changes everything." I walked into the gala thinking I was getting a ring. Instead, I stood frozen in the center of the ballroom, drowning in silk, watching him slide his mother's sapphire onto another woman's finger. Karyn Warren. The daughter of a rival family. When I begged him with my eyes to claim me, to save me from the public humiliation, he didn't flinch. He just leaned toward his Underboss, his voice amplified by the silence. "Karyn is for power. Ember is for pleasure. Don't confuse the assets." My heart didn't just break; it incinerated. He expected me to stay as his mistress, threatening to dig up my dead mother’s grave if I refused to play the obedient pet. He thought I was trapped. He thought I had nowhere to go because of my father’s massive gambling debts. He was wrong. With shaking hands, I pulled out my phone and texted the one name I was never supposed to use. Keith Mosley. The Don. The monster under Chace's bed. *I am invoking the Blood Oath. My father’s debt. I am ready to pay it.* His reply came three seconds later, buzzing against my palm like a warning. *The price is marriage. You belong to me. Yes or No?* I looked up at Chace, who was laughing with his new fiancée, thinking he owned me. I looked down and typed three letters. *Yes.*

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

I had been a wife for exactly six hours when I woke up to the sound of my husband’s heavy breathing. In the dim moonlight of our bridal suite, I watched Hardin, the man I had adored for years, intertwined with my sister Carissa on the chaise lounge. The betrayal didn't come with an apology. Hardin stood up, unashamed, and sneered at me. "You're awake? Get out, you frumpy mute." Carissa huddled under a throw, her fake tears already welling up as she played the victim. They didn't just want me gone; they wanted me erased to protect their reputations. When I refused to move, my world collapsed. My father didn't offer a shoulder to cry on; he threatened to have me committed to a mental asylum to save his business merger. "You're a disgrace," he bellowed, while the guards stood ready to drag me away. They had spent my life treating me like a stuttering, submissive pawn, and now they were done with me. I felt a blinding pain in my skull, a fracture that should have broken me. But instead of tears, something dormant and lethal flickered to life. The terrified girl who walked down the aisle earlier that day simply ceased to exist. In her place, a clinical system—the Valkyrie Protocol—booted up. My racing heart plummeted to a steady sixty beats per minute. I didn't scream. I stood up, my spine straightening for the first time in twenty years, and looked at Hardin with the detachment of a surgeon looking at a tumor. "Correction," I said, my voice stripped of its stutter. "You're in my light." By dawn, I had drained my father's accounts, vanished into a storm, and found a bleeding Crown Prince in a hidden safehouse. They thought they had broken a mute girl. They didn't realize they had just activated their own destruction.
