Five years ago, Xu Zhengnan's family went bankrupt, and he was constantly pressured to repay debts. I had an abortion and divorced him. He knelt on the ground, his attitude so humble it was as if he were begging in the dust, pleading with me not to leave him. I nestled in another man's arms, pouring half-drunk wine over his head, laughing uncontrollably, "You can't possibly still think you can trick me into coming back to serve your half-dead mother, right? That's hilarious; what woman would be that stupid? Wake up." He was utterly despondent and left the country in disgrace. Five years later, he became a prominent business tycoon overseas, attracting a lot of attention. On the first day back in the country, he came to settle the score with me.
Five years ago, Gerald's family went bankrupt, and debt collectors hounded him daily. I aborted our child and divorced him.
He knelt on the ground, utterly humbled, begging me not to abandon him.
I nestled in another man's arms, pouring half a glass of wine over his head, and laughed mockingly, "You don't still expect me to go back and take care of your ailing mother, do you? It's ridiculous, which woman would be that foolish? Wake up."
Devastated, he left the country in disgrace.
Five years later, he returned as a prominent overseas business tycoon, attracting much attention.
On his first day back, he sought me out for retribution.
1
Gerald Adams returned from abroad.
I hid in a dim alley, watching silently with my one nearly blind eye at the LED screen on the skyscraper across the street, in which Gerald was holding the hand of Kylie Adams, the popular singer, and preparing for an interview.
The flashlights were so bright that Kylie blinked uncomfortably.
Instinctively, Gerald shielded her before calmly answering the reporters' questions below.
My heart felt like it was stung by something, and it hurt a little.
He used to protect me from troublemakers in the same way.
Everything proceeded normally until, near the end, someone suddenly asked, "Mr. Adams, we heard you were previously married. Who is this lady beside you?"
Gerald smiled, pulling the bashful Kylie into his embrace before answering, "My ex-wife abandoned me at my lowest, aborting our child and divorcing me. It was Kylie who stood by me unwaveringly, and now she is my new bride. I'm back to give my wife the grand wedding she deserves for her years of companionship. As for the past, let's just say I misjudged people."
The crowd erupted in murmurs.
With just a few words, Gerald cast me as the selfish, cold-hearted ex-wife, devoid of any marital commitment.
People condemned me, while others were envying the sweet interaction between the pop star and the business mogul.
Yet, I could see the deep-seated hatred in Gerald's eyes, a hatred that seemed to want to consume me entirely, even through the screen.
I realized profoundly that he despised me, wishing for my demise.
The blood in my veins almost curdled, my already chilly body now frozen to the core, as if I fell into an abyss.
I clutched the red string in my hand, withdrew my gaze, and limped away on my broken leg.
As I neared the basement, a little girl bumped into me.
Seeing my scarred face and the empty socket of my left eye, she cried out in terror.
Her mother rushed forward, shoving me harshly, cursing, "Get away from my daughter, you lunatic!"
The rain-soaked concrete was full of filthy puddles, splashing me with dirty water.
The woman hurriedly left with her child, not looking back.
I calmly picked up the red string from the ground, cleaned it, and left as well.
In my first year of work, I was in a car accident and nearly didn't wake up.
I was given three critical condition notices.
Gerald specially went to a temple to get the red string for me.
Yesterday, while out buying food, I accidentally dropped it on the way back.
I used all my strength to find it.
It was the only thing I left that connected me to him.
I couldn't lose it.
Back in the basement, I collapsed to the ground, utterly drained.
My vision blurred, and excruciating pain engulfed my body, as if my body was engulfed in flames.
I trembled uncontrollably, my chest felt crushed by a boulder, making me hard to breathe.
I clutched the red string tightly.
Besides the external injuries, I had a crippled leg and had once been injected with a sedative overdose.
I knew I wouldn't live much longer.
Making it this far was already a stretch.
But even I was dying, there was no dignity.
I let out a bitter laugh.
At least Gerald wouldn't see me like this.
As night fell, in a place where no one passed by, my body grew cold and lifeless.
2
I never imagined that one day, despite not believing in ghosts, I would become one of them.
After a moment of surprise, I quickly accepted it.
I drifted among the crowd until I found myself at Riverside Manor.
Only then did I come to my senses.
Five years ago, Gerald used the first money he earned as a stock trader to settle there.
It was also where we lived after we got married.
The interior was decorated entirely according to my preferences.
But shortly after moving in, he was schemed against, losing everything and drowning in debt.
Gerald's mother was also diagnosed with leukemia.
With no money, we were stuck.
I took the opportunity to abort our child and divorce him.
He sold the house to pay off the debts and left for five years.
The lights came on, and in the distance, a Bugatti slowly approached.
The car door opened, and out stepped Gerald and Kylie.
Kylie seemed drunk, leaning on him for support.
Gerald effortlessly lifted her in his arms and strode inside.
Once in the room, he placed Kylie on the bed and turned to leave, but she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Kylie nuzzled his face, her voice soft and slightly tipsy, "Gerald, will you stay with me tonight?"
She wore a light purple silk camisole that accentuated her graceful figure.
Gerald didn't refuse.
Kylie's hands began to wander, and soon his shirt lay discarded on the floor.
My heart felt like it was in a vice. I turned away abruptly and left.
Why put myself through this?
They were married now.
It was perfectly normal for a couple to be intimate.
Besides, I was the one who let him go first.
I looked around at the familiar layout, feeling lost.
This house, once filled with our memories, now felt like a place of despair with another woman living there.
I didn't know how much time passed before the bedroom door opened.
Gerald walked out from inside, holding a box.
The patterns on it were all too familiar to me.
It contained everything I gave him.
He sat straight on the sofa, lighting a cigarette but not smoking it.
After a while, the cigarette burned out.
He picked up his phone, his face expressionless.
I leaned closer, only to freeze in shock.
After five years, I was still pinned at the top of his contact list.
He opened my profile and typed a message in the chat box, "I'm married now. There are things you left behind in this house that my wife is not happy to see. When will you come to take them?"
After a moment's thought, he added, "Come tomorrow, or I won't hesitate to throw them away."
The glimmer of hope that had just risen in my heart burst like a bubble, leaving me with nothing but endless pain.
The box contained everything I had given him over the years.
No one else could touch it.
If anyone tried, he'd fight them.
He used to treasure them so much.
But now, he was ready to discard them without a second thought, cold and indifferent to the extreme.
So, was it because Kylie saw the things in the box and was unhappy?
A wave of bitterness surged in my heart.
I averted my gaze, wanting to touch the box again, but could only watch helplessly as my hand passed through it.
Gerald sat on the sofa all night, waiting for my response that never came.
His expression grew colder.
I whispered in his ear, "Gerald, I'm dead, and my phone is broken. How can I reply to you?"
But Gerald probably thought I was avoiding him, unwilling to engage.
A storm was brewing in his eyes, and his face was filled with hatred. His hand, hanging by his side, clenched so tightly that his fingertips turned white.
He let out a laugh, "Theresa Adams, don't regret this!"
The box was instantly thrown into the trash can, shattering into pieces, and the contents spilled out.
Among them, the white sweater I had painstakingly knitted for him over three nights was instantly stained with dirt.
It was such an eyesore.
Those things seemed to become filthy all at once.
3
I felt as if a sharp knife was twisting inside my heart, making it hard to breathe.
I crouched on the ground, tears streaming down my face.
So, ghosts could feel pain and cry too.
The commotion in the living room disturbed Kylie in the bedroom.
She came out, pouting at him, "Gerald, I have a photo shoot today. Will you come with me?"
Gerald's expression softened a bit. He grabbed his coat and took Kylie's hand as they left.
At the venue, Kylie, now in makeup, wore a black gown, her hair elegantly styled. She gazed at Gerald with affection.
"Gerald, you are my eternal and only one."
With those words, she ran to him, cupped his face, and kissed him passionately.
The photographer stepped forward.
With a click, time seemed to freeze at that moment.
I couldn't bear to watch any longer.
The negatives from the photo shoot were posted on social media by Kylie, causing an immediate sensation.
The internet was buzzing with excitement about the couple.
"Oh my god! She's worthy of being my favorite star! No wonder he's so smitten with her!"
"Exactly, she's beautiful and treats him well, much better than his vicious ex-wife!"
"I'd give up all the delicious food forever if it means they stay together!"
"Waiting for the ex-wife's demise!"
Gerald scrolled through the comments, bored.
Suddenly, he smirked, "Theresa, do you think ignoring my messages will help? Let's see how long you can hide.
The pain I suffered five years ago, I'll make sure you pay it back, one by one."
The bitterness in my heart was suffocating.
Gerald, I was sorry.
But if I had to do it all over again, I would still make the same choice.
After dropping Kylie home, Gerald headed to the office.
For several days later, he didn't return to the Riverside Manor, as if he had forgotten about me entirely, throwing himself into work.
The heat from his affair with Kylie continued to escalate.
Until one day, Kylie's phone rang.
He went to the police station again, because Kylie was harassed outside.
The car stopped at the police station entrance. When Gerald went inside, Kylie and the person were giving their statements.
When Gerald saw the person's face clearly, his eyes widened in shock.
