Chapter 1 Clarissa

I let out a deep sigh as I sauntered towards the skyscraper up ahead. I walked as fast as my legs could carry me.

It was past 9 a.m. and I was already late for my interview.

Sweat dripped down my forehead despite the cold weather. I wasn't sweating from stress but rather from the fear of missing yet another opportunity.

I got to the large building. At the entrance, staring at me were two hefty bouncers. Their tight muscles flaunt out of their slippery black shirts, almost ripping their shirts apart.

I made my way to the transparent door. My phone rang one more time and this time, I couldn't ignore it.

I stopped just by the door. I couldn't have my phone disturbing me inside.

I brought the phone from my handbag, intending to turn it off, but when I looked at the screen, it was my Dad calling.

"Papi!" I muttered worriedly with a deep sigh on my lips. As much as I was desperate for an interview, I had to talk to my father. He and my Mom were all I had in the world.

I picked up the call and placed the phone on my ear. "Hello, Pa!" I called, and a muffled sound came from the phone, followed by panic.

I held the phone tightly against my ear. "Pa?" I called out as a sense of worry settled on me.

Then came my father's trembling voice. "C...Clarry, it's your mother!" he said and the call dropped, leaving me in a state of suspense.

I paused as my heart made a quick sink. I felt my thoughts racing like a runaway train, each one a terrifying possibility of what could've happened.

My heart started beating aggressively. An overwhelming sense of fear choked me from within and my breathing quickened.

My Mom has been suffering from cancer and there was no money to oversee the recommended surgery.

Instantly, I turned around, abandoning the job interview. With all the strength in me, I dashed out of the place to catch a quick bus home.

On getting home, I noticed a Rolls-Royce Cullinan packed right in front of the house. Its shiny armor was elegant and I found myself admiring the car and wondering how it managed to get here.

Was my Mom really in trouble?

What is happening? I asked myself.

When I entered the house, my father was sitting comfortably on the sofa, and a rich-looking visitor was opposite him.

The young man was so handsome. His athletic body shot through his plain T-shirt as his car key dangled in his hands. He was the owner of the car outside.

Our gaze met and I quickly looked away. He had a cold aura and an incredible demeanor.

"Mr. Barry, this is Clarissa, my daughter whom I told you about," I overheard my father introduce me to him, and then he turned back to me.

"Clarry, this is Barry Woodson, your suitor. He has agreed to see through your mother's surgery," my father said. At that moment, I marveled.

I had given my father my approval on an arranged marriage with a rich man who would sponsor my Mom's treatment. When I heard the man was coming, I didn't expect him to be this handsome.

I made my peace with myself, believing I would be marrying an old wealthy man just to save my mother.

But seeing the young rich Barry Woodson seated before me, I felt a sense of satisfaction.

His gaze sent chills down my spine as I stared at his alluring eyes. The hunger in them and the low smile of satisfaction on his lips.

My heart sparkled with delight, and a radiant smile lit up my face. But as the saying goes; "not all that glitters is gold."

Blinded by his handsome nature, I had no idea what I was signing up for.

A loud ringtone from my phone snapped me out of my deep thoughts, and I jolted to consciousness. I realized that I was still in the kitchen reminiscing about my past and how I ended up with Barry.

It was past 8 p.m. and the anticipation of Barry's return, my greatest nemesis, dawned on me.

"Lucien, let's get a divorce," I said in a peremptory tone that was long overdue, the most decisive farewell to this absurd marriage. We had been married for exactly three years-three years that, for me, were filled with nothing but endless loneliness and torment. For three years, the husband who should have stood by my side through every storm, Lucien Sullivan, had completely disappeared from my life as if he had never existed. He vanished without a trace, leaving me alone to endure this empty, desolate marriage. Today, I finally received his message: "I'm back. Come pick me up at the airport." When I read his words, my heart leapt with joy, and I raced to the airport, thinking that he finally understood my love and was coming back to me. But his cruelty was far worse than I could have ever imagined-he was accompanied by a pregnant woman, and that woman was Carla, my closest and most trusted friend. In that moment, all of my previous excitement, all my hope, and all of our shared laughter and tears turned into the sharpest of daggers, stabbing into my heart and leaving me gasping for air. Now, all I want is to escape from this place that has left me so broken-to lick my wounds in solitude. Even if these wounds will remain with me for the rest of my life, I refuse to have anything to do with him ever again. He should know that it was his own hand that trampled our love underfoot, that his coldness and betrayal created this irreparable situation. But when he heard those words, he desperately clung to this broken, crumbling marriage, unwilling to let it end-almost as though doing so could rewind time and return everything to how it used to be. "Aurora, come back. I regret everything!" Regret? Those simple words stirred no emotion in me-only endless sadness and fury. My heart let out a frantic, desperate scream: It's too late for any of this!
