MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE Chapter 1 The return of my husband and his lover

The sun cast golden rays through the windows, brightening every corner of the mansion.

Outside the chirping of birds filled the air with the sound of the gentle breeze on the leaves.

The aroma of food filled the atmosphere, making my stomach flutter with excitement.

My heart was racing and I felt like it was going to pop out of my chest. My husband, who I hadn't seen since my wedding day, was returning today.

I could hear the clock ticking, triggering my anxiety as every minute passed.

My marriage to Mason has been transactional, we entered into it for mutual benefits. I had managed to revive my father's company, and my mother's surgery was a success. I was grateful for the resources that Mason's connection provided.

Mason's family and my family had been business partners before my father passed away, so I had the chance to see him occasionally. I had always loved him, ever since the first moment my eyes met his, but he never seemed to notice me in that way. He has a lover, someone who captured his attention, while I remained in the shadows.

His parents arranged my marriage with Mason just to help me and I couldn't refuse the offer.

To the outside world, I was his wife, a title that carries weight to the Media, but behind closed doors, our marriage is just a marriage of inconvenience.

My heart aches as I anticipate his return that our marriage was more transactional than genuine and he will never love me the way I do love him

All the staff walked outside, and nervousness filled the air. I'm a few minutes, a sleek white Lamborghini drove in. I felt a wave of sweat trickle down my back. I managed to stay calm as I stood on the veranda of the house, trying to steady my racing Heart as the staff lined up at the entrance.

I glanced towards the car.

Some men rushed to open the door for Mason, their movements quick and practiced. As he stepped out of the car, the sunlight seemed to catch his face just right, brightening his features and making his handsome face glow.

My heart skipped at the sight of him, he surveyed the environment.

He walked to the other side of the car and opened the door, and I was shocked to see Brittany, his lover, emerge. Mason held her hand gently, and she stepped out confidently.

My heart skipped a beat. I was hurt. Seeing Mason and Brittany, the realization hit me that I was delusional, hoping Mason and I could have a chance to connect but seeing them together shattered that hope.

As they shared a laugh, my mind raced with questions. How had I allowed myself to believe that our marriage might mean something more? Standing there on the veranda, I felt invisible, Would I ever be more than just a name to him?

I envied their little laugh, the way he looked at her like she was his universe.

I questioned my worth, wondering why I had never been able to capture his attention. Was I not enough? Does our marriage mean little or nothing to him that he could easily share his life with someone else?

I stood there feeling like a ghost in my own life. Overshadowed by someone who has everything I have longed for.

They walked past me after glazing at me without saying a word It felt like a knife had been pierced through my chest.

The staff began mumbling to themselves. I just wished the ground would open up and swallow me. I took a deep breath and walked into the house.

I'm not giving up on Mason, Not yet.

"Home sweet home!" I heard Brittany exclaim with excitement, her voice bright and full of joy.

I watched, my heart sinking, as they leaned in and kissed right in front of me.

The staff began carrying big boxes upstairs; I couldn't help but roll my eyes, a mix of bitterness and disbelief written over me. "Is she staying here forever?" I mumbled to myself.

Mason didn't even glance at me, he turned to Brittany, casually saying, "I'll go take a shower. I'll be right back for lunch." He kissed her cheek, and she hummed in response, the sound of his footsteps fading as he ascended the stairs.

Brittany's eyes landed on me, and she walked closer with confidence. "Oh, the latest bride in town," she said, her tone filled with sarcasm.

Here she was, standing in my home, taunting me as if I were the intruder. I didn't respond to her, choosing to remain silent.

"Oh, poor little thing," she chuckled, she voiced with mock sympathy. "I see you want what I have."

Her confidence was infuriating. "You can have the title as his wife," she continued, leaning in slightly, "but you can never have the key to his heart. He belongs with me."

Every word she said sounded like a challenge

I forced a smile and said, "Welcome to the mansion," trying to walk away. But she grabbed my arm, her nails digging into my skin, making me wince in pain.

"As long as I'm here, you will do exactly what I command," she said, her voice echoing with authority. I felt the weight of her words.

She was the daughter of a multimillionaire, and I was just the daughter of nobody.

"Understood?" she asked, her tone commanding. I replied with a hesitant, "Yes," and she finally let go of my arms.

As she released her grip, I could still see the imprint of her nails on my skin, a painful reminder of her authority. I rubbed my arms lightly, trying to shake off the pain. She walked upstairs, her confidence with every step as she made her way to Mason's room. I watched her, a mix of frustration.

I couldn't stand the sight of Brittany and Mason, so I decided to visit my mom. The thought of her comfort and support felt like a lifeline. As I turned to leave, I reminded myself that I had a purpose beyond this agitation...

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

I was the titan of Wall Street until an indictment and an ankle monitor turned my penthouse into a gilded cage. To save face, I was forced into a marriage with Elza, a "mute" girl from the Schmidt family whom I treated as nothing more than a silent piece of furniture while my empire crumbled. The night I was poisoned at a high-society gala, a mysterious server in an oversized uniform saved my life with terrifying, clinical precision. They disappeared into the night, leaving me with a silver cufflink and a burning obsession to find the shadow who held my life in their hands. Back home, I took my frustration out on Elza, telling her she was "exhausting to look at" and "smelled like sickness" after her charity visits. Her own family treated her like a stray dog, trying to humiliate her at the next gala by dressing her in what they claimed was a cheap knockoff while whispering to the press that she was nothing but a high-end escort. "Stay out of my way," I would growl at her, never noticing the steel in her eyes. I sat at my table, watching my rivals' stocks plummet and wondering who "The Zero"—the legendary financial ghost—really was. I never suspected that the woman I ignored was the same one solving the equations that were currently burning Manhattan to the ground. The injustice peaked when Elza stood before the city's elite, not as a victim, but as a queen. She dropped over a hundred million dollars to buy back her family’s legacy, revealing a secret fortune that made my own empire look like pocket change. As I grabbed her wrist and saw the small red mole hidden beneath her watch, the truth hit me like a physical blow. The silent wife I had despised was the savior I had been hunting, and she was finally done playing the victim. "We have a lot to talk about, wife," I whispered, realizing I had been sleeping next to the most dangerous woman in the world.
