Chapter 1 The beginning

Autumn Smith stood in front of the majestic Grey's Hotel, her heart racing as the vibrant pulse of New York City buzzed around her. The towering glass windows reflected the skyline, shimmering like diamonds in the sunlight, and the grandeur of the building seemed to dwarf her small figure. She felt a sense of both excitement and trepidation wash over her. This was it. She needed this opportunity more than anything.

"Just breathe," she whispered to herself, clutching the folder containing her application and resume. This job was her chance to change her life, to finally pursue her dream of attending college. With a deep breath, she stepped into the hotel.

Inside, the lobby dazzled with opulence. Gleaming marble floors stretched beneath her feet, reflecting the towering glass windows that framed the city's skyline. Everything spoke of luxury and power-polished furniture, sparkling chandeliers, and impeccably dressed staff attending to the needs of the guests. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, a mixture of lively conversations and the soft clinking of glasses from the nearby bar. Autumn felt like a drop in a vast ocean, overwhelmed by the opulence surrounding her. She had always felt invisible, a feeling that seemed to amplify in the grandeur of this place.

Trying to suppress her nerves, Autumn stepped up to the receptionist desk. "I'm here for the job interview," she said, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed.

The receptionist-a well-dressed woman with a sleek bun and a warm smile-looked up from her computer. Her expression shifted as she took in Autumn's nervous demeanor. "You're quite early. The interview isn't until eleven. You have about two hours to wait. Would you like to take a seat?" She gestured to a nearby seating area.

"Yes, please," Autumn replied, grateful for the opportunity to collect her thoughts. She was used to being the center of attention for all the wrong reasons, and she felt the familiar pang of self-consciousness creep in. Her insecurities bubbled to the surface as she noticed the stares of other guests. She knew how she looked-her big red bumps and oversized glasses didn't help her case.

The receptionist nodded and directed her to the lounge. "Have a seat. If you get a little bored, you can explore the hotel. Good luck!" she said with a smile before turning back to her work.

Autumn settled into one of the plush armchairs in the lounge, attempting to make herself comfortable. The lounge area was tastefully decorated, with soft lighting and contemporary art pieces adorning the walls. The faint hum of classical music played in the background, creating a serene atmosphere that she desperately needed. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the music wash over her like a gentle wave.

To pass the time, she decided to take the receptionist's advice and explore the hotel. With tentative steps, she wandered through the corridors, marveling at the luxurious decor and elegant design. Each hallway was adorned with fresh flowers, and the scent of expensive perfumes lingered in the air. It was easy to see why Grey's Hotel was one of the most prestigious establishments in the country.

As she walked, Autumn imagined what it would be like to work in such an environment. She envisioned herself greeting guests, assisting in events, and even helping organize special functions. The thought excited her, pushing her insecurities to the back of her mind, if only for a moment.

Her exploration took her to the dining area, where guests were enjoying gourmet meals served by attentive staff. The clinking of silverware and soft murmurs of conversation created a warm ambiance, yet it heightened her sense of being an outsider. She slipped away, wanting to avoid drawing any unnecessary attention to herself.

Eventually, Autumn stumbled upon the spa area. The tranquil scents of essential oils wafted through the air, creating a calming effect that momentarily eased her nerves. She watched as guests relaxed, indulging in luxurious treatments. Their smiles and laughter seemed like a distant reality, one she yearned to be part of.

Feeling a bit more confident, she continued her exploration, each room more extravagant than the last. But as she wandered, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was in a world far removed from her own-a world of wealth and privilege that felt just out of reach.

Continuing her journey, Autumn soon found herself at the entrance to the rooftop terrace. As she stepped outside, the stunning view took her breath away. The skyline stretched before her, a magnificent tapestry of towering buildings glistening in the sunlight. She felt a rush of exhilaration as the city sprawled beneath her, alive with the movement of cars and pedestrians below.

The terrace was adorned with elegant lounge chairs and small tables, where guests sipped drinks and enjoyed the breathtaking panorama. Autumn leaned against the railing, allowing the cool breeze to play with her hair. Below, the bustling streets of New York moved like a living organism, with people weaving in and out of shops and restaurants. The sounds of the city-a cacophony of honking horns, laughter, and music-formed a symphony that felt both exhilarating and intimidating.

For a moment, she closed her eyes and soaked in the atmosphere, feeling a swell of hope and determination. If she could secure this job, it would be a step toward the future she dreamed of-one filled with opportunities. She imagined herself working here, serving guests and sharing in their joy, helping to create memorable experiences in this beautiful place.

After a few moments of reflection, she wandered back inside, her heart still racing from the beauty of the view. She continued down the hallways, admiring the lavish decor that adorned every corner. The walls were adorned with elegant wallpaper in soft hues, and the floors were polished to a high shine. Crystal light fixtures hung from the ceilings, casting a warm glow that added to the luxurious ambiance.

Eventually, she discovered the hotel's library. It was a cozy space, filled with bookshelves that reached the ceiling, lined with leather-bound volumes and modern bestsellers alike. The scent of old books mingled with fresh coffee from a nearby café, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. She wandered through the aisles, running her fingers along the spines of the books, each one promising an adventure or a lesson waiting to be discovered.

After a while, she found a comfortable nook by a large window and sank into a plush armchair. She picked up a book, its cover adorned with golden lettering, and began to read. The story whisked her away to another world, allowing her to escape the pressures of the day. Time slipped by unnoticed as she lost herself in the narrative, feeling a sense of belonging in this little haven within the hotel.

As she read, she imagined how wonderful it would be to work in such an environment-surrounded by knowledge and creativity. The library was a treasure trove of stories, much like her own life that was yet to be fully written. She longed to contribute to the hotel's narrative, to be a part of something bigger than herself.

Eventually, she reluctantly set the book down, realizing it was time to return to the lobby. As she walked back, she reflected on her journey through Grey's Hotel. Each room had its own charm, and she felt a growing sense of excitement about the possibility of working here. The staff's professionalism, the beauty of the surroundings, and the vibrant atmosphere all stirred something within her-a hope that this job could be her gateway to a new life.

On her way back to the lobby, Autumn ventured into the hotel's garden. It was an enchanting space, filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. Delicate roses in various shades of pink and white bloomed alongside vibrant tulips and daisies, creating a riot of color. The fragrance of fresh blooms hung in the air, mingling with the scent of freshly cut grass.

Autumn took a moment to breathe deeply, letting the beauty of the garden wash over her. She walked along the winding path, stopping to admire the blossoms that seemed to dance in the gentle breeze. A small fountain bubbled nearby, the sound of water adding a soothing soundtrack to her exploration. The garden felt like a sanctuary, a peaceful escape from the bustling world outside.

As she wandered through the vibrant blooms, she felt a sense of tranquility envelop her. This garden was a reminder that beauty could flourish even in the most unexpected places. Autumn closed her eyes for a moment, imagining herself working in this hotel, perhaps organizing events or assisting guests as they celebrated milestones amidst the flowers.

But as she turned to leave the garden, a sudden rustle in the bushes caught her attention. She paused, her heart racing. The sound was faint but unmistakable, like something-or someone-was moving through the foliage. Autumn's breath caught in her throat as she scanned the area, feeling a chill creep down her spine.

Just as she began to convince herself it was nothing, a shadow darted past the corner of her vision. Startled, she stepped back, her pulse quickening. Was someone else exploring the hotel? Or was there something more sinister lurking in the corners of this seemingly perfect place?

Fighting the urge to flee, she peered deeper into the garden, her curiosity battling with her fear. The vibrant flowers now felt ominous, their beauty masking an unsettling atmosphere. Her mind raced with questions. What if someone was hiding? What if they had noticed her wandering around?

Before she could decide what to do, a figure emerged from the shadows of the garden, a silhouette against the vibrant colors. Autumn's heart raced. The figure was cloaked in an unfamiliar darkness, contrasting sharply with the brightness of the flowers. She felt frozen, caught between the urge to run and the instinct to understand what was happening.

As the figure stepped closer, Autumn held her breath. The garden, once a sanctuary, now felt like a trap. She had come here seeking hope and a new beginning, but now it felt as though the very place that promised a brighter future was hiding secrets of its own.

With her mind swirling in confusion and anticipation, she took a hesitant step back, unsure of what was to come. Whatever was lurking in the garden was about to reveal itself, and she was caught in the web of uncertainty, poised on the edge of discovery.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

For seventeen years, I was the pride of the Carlisle family, the perfect daughter destined to inherit an empire. But that life ended the moment a DNA report slid across my father’s mahogany desk. The paper proved I was a stranger. Vanessa, the girl sobbing in the corner, was the real biological daughter they had been searching for. "You need to leave. Tonight. Before the press gets wind of this. Before the stock prices dip." My father’s voice was as cold as flint. My mother wouldn't even look at me, staring out the window at the gardens as if I were already a ghost. Just like that, I was erased. I left behind the Birkin bags and the diamonds, throwing my Centurion Card into a crystal bowl with a clatter that echoed like a gunshot. I walked out into the cold night and climbed into a rusted Ford Taurus driven by a man I had never met—my biological father. I went from a mansion to a fourth-floor walk-up in Queens that smelled of laundry detergent and struggle. My new siblings looked at me with a mix of fear and disgust, waiting for the "fallen princess" to break. They expected me to beg for my old life back, to crumble without the luxury I’d known since birth. But they didn't know the truth. I had spent years training in a shark tank, honing survival skills they couldn't imagine. While Richard Carlisle froze my trust funds to starve me out, my net worth was climbing by millions on an encrypted trading app. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves. They didn't realize they were just letting me off my leash. As the Carlisles prepared to debut Vanessa at the Manhattan Arts Gala, I was already making my move. "Get dressed. We're going to a party."
