Chapter 1 Cheating Fiancé

Evelyn's POV

"Lucas! How could you do this to me?" I shrieked angrily with gritted teeth at the man in my stepsister's room. My eyes pricked with hot tears, while I shook my head slowly in disbelief.

Breathing heavily, Lucas quickly released his grip on the lady lying beneath him and covered their nakedness up with the duvet. He laid down comfortably on the bed and directed his gaze to where I stood.

This was the man I have dearly loved for four good years of my life. The man that I wore his ring in my middle finger and was supposed to walk down the aisle with, in a matter of hours.

Lucas was every woman's dream. The looks, the money, he got it all. I couldn't contain my joy when he knelt down solemnly before me, to insert that beautiful diamond ring into my middle finger. I felt blessed indeed to be the lucky one and was too eager to flaunt my ringed finger in front of my friends. All of that was months ago. Right now, he's more than a worst enemy.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" He boomed into my ears. "You should have been sensible enough to have knocked on the door before you got in, but unfortunately, you're too dumb to think of that."

His face was expressionless. It was anything, but remorseful. So was that of the woman he made love to. I couldn't believe he could say such a thing to me, at least not now, not when we're supposed to get married soon.

"It's our wedding tomorrow, Lucas and this was all you could think of?" I said, in a soft but firm voice, laddened with sadness.

"Look here, young lady!" He began. "There is no us, so stop being so pathetic. It's never my fault that you are dumb! Too dumb to fathom that I was never getting married to you!"

His fierce words cut through my delicate heart, shattering it into many pieces. To think of it that this was someone who was on his knees months ago, pleading earnestly with me, in all genuineness of heart, that I should be his. How on earth could I have believed he could do this to me?

"You think you were ever going to get married to him? Oh poor, you! Lucas is mine," Lisa scoffed, giggling heartily under his embrace.

I ignored my stepsister's ill remarks. I already knew she despised me, but not this much. I didn't really understand why she always wanted to have what was originally supposed to be mine.

Lisa chuckled irritatingly, mocking me openly with a mirthless laughter. Her large almond eyes blinked slightly, while her gaze was fixed at me.

"I've been with Lucas even before he met you and you thought you could steal him away from me so easily? Never! That's never gonna happen!" She threatened, with clenched teeth.

I felt yet another stab in my chest. I should have known I've been fooled all these while. Why did it take four solid years before I got to realize that I had been living in a facade?

As much as I knew, Lucas and Lisa were just friends. They only spent stolen moments with each other, each time I wasn't close by and I felt jealous of those times, but I didn't show it. I never knew there was more to their little chitchats than I could possibly imagine.

I did so many things to make him happy, and to keep him to myself, but it never seems to work. I've been blindfolded by love and have begun to lose myself just in the process.

It hurt me each time he compared Lisa to me. He made me feel I was inadequate; almost worthless.

"Oh why can't you work out at the gym, so you'll get as curvy as Lisa," I heard him say on one occasion.

It has always been 'oh why can't you be like this or that?' I stupidly registered for gym sessions, worked my ass off, just to please him. Nevertheless, he still blamed me for not working hard enough and complained about my figure, claiming I fattened myself up by eating too much junk.

"But I loved you, Lucas. I trusted you with all my heart!" I whimpered, choking on my tears. "Is this what I get in return?"

"Enough of this!" He roared. "As you can see, we're having a good time right now, so you had better leave this instant!"

"What?! How can you say that? C'mon Lucas, our wedding is tomorrow! You can't tell me that!" I protested, unwilling to take in the tense message.

"Leave immediately! Don't let me push you out myself. I would not be gentle on you for any reason!" He growled, in a menacing voice.

"Lucas!" His name lingered in my heavy heart, tears now cascaded freely down my eyes. "I will leave, but I'd definitely make you regret this!"

My tiny voice was drowned by fits of uncontrollable laughter, as I uttered those words.

"Look how pathetic you are! Is this your own attempt at being stoic? Pity, it's just an attempt," Lucas sneered, with an amused expression on his face. " I have no regrets about this. I can't believe I could be with such a miserable creature as you are all these years!"

My eyes welled with a fresh wave of tears. His words hurt me so badly and unfortunately, they were true. I couldn't stand and watch him talk to me in that manner, so I decided to leave.

Taking a deep breath, I made my way to the door and swung it open. I stormed out, slamming the door carelessly with a loud bang and I headed down the stairs, as fast as I could, my heart wrenching with deep pain.

I made it to the front door and just as I was about to step out, I was called back by a shrill but firm voice from behind.

"Where the hell do you think you're going? Get back in and go do the dishes, silly!"

I averted my gaze slowly to see who it was that addressed me. It turned out to be Rosalie, my worst nightmare!

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I died on a Tuesday. It wasn't a quick death. It was slow, cold, and meticulously planned by the man who called himself my father. I was twenty years old. He needed my kidney to save my sister. The spare part for the golden child. I remember the blinding lights of the operating theater, the sterile smell of betrayal, and the phantom pain of a surgeon's scalpel carving into my flesh while my screams echoed unheard. I remember looking through the observation glass and seeing him-my father, Giovanni Vitiello, the Don of the Chicago Outfit-watching me die with the same detached expression he used when signing a death warrant. He chose her. He always chose her. And then, I woke up. Not in heaven. Not in hell. But in my own bed, a year before my scheduled execution. My body was whole, unscarred. The timeline had reset, a glitch in the cruel matrix of my existence, giving me a second chance I never asked for. This time, when my father handed me a one-way ticket to London-an exile disguised as a severance package-I didn't cry. I didn't beg. My heart, once a bleeding wound, was now a block of ice. He didn't know he was talking to a ghost. He didn't know I had already lived through his ultimate betrayal. He also didn't know that six months ago, during the city's brutal territory wars, I was the one who saved his most valuable asset. In a secret safe house, I stitched up the wounds of a blinded soldier, a man whose life hung by a thread. He never saw my face. He only knew my voice, the scent of vanilla, and the steady touch of my hands. He called me Sette. Seven. For the seven stitches I put in his shoulder. That man was Dante Moretti. The Ruthless Capo. The man my sister, Isabella, is now set to marry. She stole my story. She claimed my actions, my voice, my scent. And Dante, the man who could spot a lie from a mile away, believed the beautiful deception because he wanted it to be true. He wanted the golden girl to be his savior, not the invisible sister who was only ever good for her spare parts. So I took the ticket. In my past life, I fought them, and they silenced me on an operating table. This time, I will let them have their perfect, gilded lie. I will go to London. I will disappear. I will let Seraphina Vitiello die on that plane. But I will not be a victim. This time, I will not be the lamb led to slaughter. This time, from the shadows of my exile, I will be the one holding the match. And I will wait, with the patience of the dead, to watch their entire world burn. Because a ghost has nothing to lose, and a queen of ashes has an empire to gain.
