In the evening, I went to the bar once again to pick up a drunken Archie. A row of attractive women sat beside him, each vying for his attention. Archie owned a chain of bars in Calchester. His father was a prominent figure in the city, and Archie, being the only son, was spoiled from a young age, which shaped his carefree and indulgent nature.

When Archie saw me, he wrapped his arm around my waist and blew a puff of smoke in my face. "I thought you weren't coming after making me wait so long. Come on, take me home!"

Feeling a bit embarrassed, I had a hard time hauling the drunken Archie. An attractive woman beside him, clearly jealous, reluctantly shifted him onto me. "Stop acting all high and mighty. Weren't you also working here before?" she sneered behind me.

I ignored her, but she wasn't wrong. I first crossed paths with Archie in this very bar. Back then, I was a top student at Horizon University, working part-time to pay off my family's debts. Because of my looks, I was harassed by some troublemakers at the bar, and it was Archie who saved me.

After that, Archie chased after me relentlessly. He had many women around him, but I was the only one he publicly acknowledged as his girlfriend. Despite his frequent cheating, he never mistreated me in other ways. Archie wasn't well-educated, but he had a knack for business and connections in both legal and illegal circles. Handsome, tall, and generous, he had no shortage of admirers.

As we left the bar, Archie whispered in my ear, "Your best trait is how tolerant you are." It wasn't that I didn't care; it was just that if I truly cared about Archie's philandering ways, I would have lost my mind long ago.

It was already late at night when I brought Archie to my place. My ten-year-old Tricia, upon seeing me, immediately came to greet me. Tricia was incredibly intuitive, with large, blinking eyes. She rubbed against me and gave me a kiss, a daily ritual for us.

I had a special bond with Tricia. I found her in an exotic pet shop in Azliwood during a trip. The shop owner claimed she was a magical cat from Rimgue Mountain, said to bring longevity if eaten. Some big guys had specifically ordered her, and the owner was about to kill her when she looked at me with her big, blinking eyes. My heart softened, and I spent a hefty sum to buy her, even getting into a big argument with the men, nearly resulting in a fight.

Since then, Tricia became my beloved pet. I pampered her with the best food, drinks, and health supplements. I even remodeled my home to create a cat-friendly environment. Friends who visited often joked that they couldn't tell if the house was for me or the cat. Tricia's only flaw was her dislike for baths, but I indulged her in this too, often sending her to luxury pet spas for pampering.

In short, apart from paying off family debts, most of my money was spent on Tricia. I found joy in it because she provided me with emotional comfort that no one else could. However, Archie didn't like her. He always felt that Tricia had an intimidating and sinister look. He often tried to persuade me to get rid of her, but I always refused, leading to frequent arguments.

Back in the bedroom, Archie tossed me onto the bed, ready to undress and kiss me. Suddenly, we heard the familiar "thump, thump, thump" of Tricia entering the room. Every time Archie tried to be intimate with me, Tricia would run over, squeeze between us, and scratch his face.

"Such a buzzkill. Every time we try to be intimate, she has to come over," Archie grumbled, lighting a cigarette and sitting up. Just then, his phone rang. It was one of the attractive women calling, her voice flirtatious on the other end. "Alright, I'll be right over, you little minx," he said, hanging up without offering me any explanation and hurriedly leaving.

I knew he had grown tired of our relationship. To him, I had become a dull and uninteresting person. As he slammed the door, I had a feeling that our relationship was nearing its end. Sure enough, while I was out, Archie took all his stuff from my place. Along with him, Tricia also disappeared.

I went to the bar to find Archie and ask about Tricia's whereabouts, but he wasn't there. The attractive women took the opportunity to taunt me. Angered, I grabbed a bottle and swung it in their direction, but in the chaos, I ended up hitting my own head and passed out.

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a luxurious hotel suite's sofa. A stranger with a sculpted body and strikingly handsome face, wearing pajamas, was walking towards me. I felt a jolt of fear, touching the wound on my head to confirm I wasn't dreaming.

I gave him everything. Twelve years of my youth, my full Stanford scholarship, a promising career as an analyst at Goldman Sachs – all sacrificed to build his company, NextGen Solutions, from the ground up. I was his co-founder, his COO, the true architect of his vision, working 80-hour weeks for a mere $65,000 annually while he took all the credit and lived like a king. Then, just seven days before my 30th birthday, Ethan Miller, the man I believed would finally propose, proudly announced in a Forbes interview he was marrying "a woman who dedicated her youth to him" on that very day. My phone exploded with congratulations, everyone convinced he meant me, his childhood sweetheart and loyal partner. But I knew the chilling truth: he was marrying Brittany Hayes, a stunningly incompetent intern, with a lavish Tribeca penthouse and a 10-carat Tiffany diamond bought with "our" company’s funds. I overheard him telling his fraternity brothers he’d “smooth it over” with me later, mocking me as his “free COO” and “total simp” behind my back. The man I had loved and bled for, the one who took every credit and let his friends humiliate me, truly saw me as nothing more than a convenient, disposable resource. His casual cruelty, after all my loyalty and hard work, hardened my heart. On my 30th birthday, wearing my own custom Vera Wang wedding gown, I walked into City Hall. My presence there was not a desperate plea for him, but a silent, deliberate declaration of my freedom. My true fiancé, a man who truly valued me and our future, was already on his way from London.

I was once the princess of the Upper East Side, but now I’m just "debt wrapped in pretty skin." To keep my father alive in a federal penitentiary, I signed a contract I didn't fully understand. I thought it was about restoring my family's name, but producer Barnett Orr treated it like a bill of sale for my soul. Inside his limousine, the air smelled like gasoline and fear. Barnett didn't want a star; he wanted a victim. He bruised my jaw and ripped my vintage silk gown to shreds, laughing because he knew I couldn't fight back without signing my father's death warrant. "Don't forget who owns you, Felicity," he whispered. When he dragged me into Dewitt Knight’s penthouse party, I was a walking disaster. I huddled in Barnett’s oversized jacket, my lip bleeding and my spirit shattered. The elite crowd didn't see a victim; they saw a fallen girl selling herself for a role. A former rival poured red wine over me, and the room erupted in cruel laughter while Barnett told everyone he was just "testing my commitment." I looked up at the balcony, locking eyes with Dewitt Knight. He was a god in a bespoke suit, looking down at me with cold, lethal disgust. He didn't see the bruises or the desperation. He only saw a transaction he found beneath him. "So the rumors are true," he said, his voice cutting through the music. "The Aguilars really will do anything for money now. Even this." I was trapped between a monster who wanted to break me and a man who thought I was trash. No one cared that my father's life depended on my silence. When Barnett cornered me in a guest room later that night, his belt jingling like a death knell, I realized no one was coming to save a girl like me. I fought back with a crystal vase, shattering it against his shoulder, but I was drowning in my own terror. Just as Barnett lunged for my throat, the door was kicked off its hinges. Dewitt stood there, finally seeing the blood on the carpet and the map of purple bruises on my bare back. He chased the monster away, but I didn't feel safe. I locked the guest room door, wedged a chair under the handle, and slept with a silver letter opener pressed against my skin. When I crept into the kitchen at midnight and found him waiting in the shadows, I aimed the blade at his heart. "In this house, no one hurts you," he promised, his voice a low velvet rumble. But in a world where I had already been sold once, I knew that even protection came with a price I couldn't afford to pay.

The Scars She Hid From The World

The Scars She Hid From The World

REGINA MCBRIDE

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
