Chapter 1 Hearts

Anna Travis was a woman on a mission. At 28, she had already carved out a reputation as one of the most driven and ambitious young professionals in her field. Standing tall with an air of confidence, her piercing blue eyes and sharp intellect commanded attention in any room. Anna's life revolved around her career, and she thrived on the challenges and successes that came with it. Working long hours was a norm, not an exception, and she often found herself at her office desk well into the night, perfecting presentations or strategizing the next big move for her company.

Anna lived and worked in the heart of a bustling metropolis, a city that never seemed to sleep. Skyscrapers lined the skyline, their glass facades reflecting the vibrancy of urban life. The city was a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and opportunities, offering endless possibilities for those willing to chase their dreams. Anna's apartment was located in a sleek, modern high-rise with a stunning view of the city's iconic skyline.

Each morning, she navigated through the throngs of commuters, her heels clicking against the pavement as she made her way to her office in one of the city's most prestigious companies, Sunnex Corp.

Sunnex Corp. was a powerhouse in the technology sector, known for its innovative solutions and cutting-edge products. Anna had started at Sunnex as an intern right out of college and had quickly climbed the ranks. Now, she held a senior management position, responsible for overseeing major projects and guiding her team towards success. The office environment was fast-paced and competitive, but Anna thrived under pressure, her determination and work ethic setting her apart from her peers.

Anna's journey to success had not been an easy one. Growing up in a small town with limited opportunities, she had always dreamed of something more. Her parents, hardworking but modest, had instilled in her the values of perseverance and dedication. They had sacrificed much to ensure she had a good education, and Anna was determined to make the most of it. She excelled in school, earning a scholarship to a prestigious university in the city.

College was a transformative experience for Anna. Away from the familiar comforts of home, she immersed herself in her studies, discovering a passion for business and technology. She faced her share of challenges, from financial struggles to balancing multiple part-time jobs, but she never wavered in her pursuit of excellence. Her professors recognized her potential and mentored her, helping her secure an internship at Sunnex Corp. during her final year.

The internship was a turning point. Anna poured her heart and soul into her work, impressing her supervisors with her innovative ideas and relentless drive. Upon graduation, she was offered a full-time position, and she never looked back. Over the years, she worked tirelessly, often at the expense of her personal life, to achieve her career goals. Each promotion and accolade was a testament to her hard work and determination.

Now, as a senior manager at Sunnex, Anna was at the peak of her career. She had a beautiful apartment, financial security, and the respect of her colleagues. Yet, despite all her accomplishments, there was a lingering emptiness in her life. She had devoted so much time and energy to her career that she had neglected other aspects of her life, particularly love and relationships. As she gazed out at the city from her office window, Anna couldn't help but wonder if there was more to life than just professional success. Little did she know, her world was about to be turned upside down

On a Monday morning, Anna woke up to her phone ringing, it was a call from her mother.

"Good morning mum" Anna said.

Anna, why didn't you show up for dinner yesterday?" Mrs Travis said.

"Sorry I couldn't make it, I had to finish up some work yesterday" Anna said.

Always working, you know I wanted you to meet my guest. I was hoping you two would go on a date but you ruined it by not showing up. When will you ever find time to go on a date, so you can find Mr right to marry" Mrs Travis said angrily.

Mum, I have to go prepare for work, we would talk later bye!" Anna said.

Anna hung up the call, then stood up from her bed and went straight to the bathroom. Before now Anna had stopped going over to her parents house, since her mother doesn't want to cease talking about marriage, dates and to top it all promising to find date's for her.

"I seriously need a break" Anna thought .

Before heading out of the apartment to work she texted her friend Jean, that she wants to see her afterwork at her house.

Jean replied, " Sure, I'll prepare your favorite"

Jean and Anna met in college, where they quickly became best friends due to their complementary personalities. Jean pursued a career in marketing, where her creativity and people skills thrived.

She's happily married to her husband Mark, for three years and often shares insights from her own experiences with Anna.

After work hour, Anna took a cab to Jeans house. She got to the door and was received happily by Jean, who loves to have Anna around her. Jean had a shoulder-length, curly brown hair and hazel eyes.

She dresses stylishly, often mixing professional attire with trendy pieces. Her warm smile and energetic demeanor make her approachable and easy to talk to. She's the Marketing Manager at a prominent advertising agency.

Jean has a natural ability to understand and relate to Anna's struggles, offering thoughtful and practical advice.

"I'm so delighted to see you" Jean said.

How's Mark?" Anna asked.

Mark is away on a business trip" Jean said.

"So, how's work at the agency" Anna said.

"Good" Jean said.

Jean went to the kitchen to get the donuts for Anna.

"Thanks, for baking this" Anna said, then too a bite.

"This is so tasty" Anna said.

"Thank goodness you love it" Jean said excitedly.

She stood up to get a bottle of wine from it's stand along with two wine glass. Poured wine into the glasses.

"So, tell me about this new project at Sunnex. It sounds intense!" Jean said.

Anna sighed, "It is, but it's also an incredible opportunity. I just don't want to lose sight of everything else" Anna said.

"That's why I'm here. We'll make sure you stay balanced. And speaking of balance, how's the love life?" Jean said handing Anna a glass.

Anna laughed and said, "Nonexistent, as usual. my mum is so pissed at me. I didn't show up for the dinner date she set up last night."

"Oh no, what happened? I thought you were going to give it a try" Jean said.

"Yeah , I thought I could bring myself to, but no. The last thing I want is my mum setting me on a date. Right now my career is very important to me, I can't afford to lose focus" Anna said.

"I know but you need to give someone a chance, and I do believe their's Mr right out there for you" Jean said.

"You think so" Anna said quietly.

"You will meet him soon" Jean said and smiled.

Anna stared at the glass of wine in her hand, and thought about finding Mr right.

I was finally brought back to the billionaire Vance estate after years in the grimy foster system, but the luxury Lincoln felt more like a funeral procession. My biological family didn't welcome me with open arms; they looked at me like a stain on a silk shirt. They thought I was a "defective" mute with cognitive delays, a spare part to be traded away. Within hours of my arrival, my father decided to sell me to Julian Thorne, a bitter, paralyzed heir, just to secure a corporate merger. My sister Tiffany treated me like trash, whispering for me to "go back to the gutter" before pouring red wine over my dress in front of Manhattan's elite. When a drunk cousin tried to lay hands on me at the engagement gala, my grandmother didn't protect me-she raised her silver-topped cane to strike my face for "embarrassing the family." They called me a sacrificial lamb, laughing as they signed the prenuptial agreement that stripped me of my freedom. They had no idea I was E-11, the underground hacker-artist the world was obsessed with, or that I had already breached their private servers. I found the hidden medical records-blood types A, A, and B-a biological impossibility that proved my "parents" were harboring a scandal that could ruin them. Why bring me back just to discard me again? And why was Julian Thorne, the man supposedly bound to a wheelchair, secretly running miles at dawn on his private estate? Standing in the middle of the ballroom, I didn't plead for mercy. I used a text-to-speech app to broadcast a cold, synthetic threat: "I have the records, Richard. Do you want me to explain genetics to the press, or should we leave quietly?" With the "paralyzed" billionaire as my unexpected accomplice, I walked out of the Vance house and into a much more dangerous game.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.
