Silkworm Woman Chapter 1

Chapter 1

[1]

If there were a piece of clothing that could make you the person who got the highest score on SAT effortlessly, would you wear it?

My mother is a legendary figure known for producing magical silk. The clothes made from this silk can transform even the most unremarkable person into the top student.

Because of this, our village became famously known as Genius Village. However, no one noticed that the children's eyes gradually lost their sparkle and they became listless.

[2]

1. Our village is nestled deep in the mountains, a journey requiring at least three hours of trekking from town. Despite these humble beginnings, we've recently gained a reputation for producing academic geniuses, earning the nickname Genius Village.

This year, the village leader's son, Ian, achieved the highest score in the entire state for the science section of the college entrance exam. When the TV station arrived to interview our top-scoring village, I was in the cellar feeding my mother.

The cellar was filled with the smell of freshly picked mulberry leaves, still glistening with morning dew. My mother lay on a pile of straw, eyes closed, mouth open, chewing with a serene rhythm. Her actions and appearance were unsettlingly similar to that of a silkworm.

Up above, I could hear the reporter's admiring voice, "Your village is extraordinary. Last year, both the top scorers in the county's college entrance exams came from here, and this year, you've produced the state's top science scorer. Truly remarkable!"

The village leader, basking in the attention, boasted, "You have no idea. My son Ian has been remarkably intelligent from a very young age. He excelled in everything he did. Becoming the state's top scorer was actually an underachievement for him. If he took that test again, he would surely be the top scorer in the nation."

I glanced at the simple-minded person beside me, who was picking his nose, and sighed helplessly. "Your grandpa sure knows how to brag," I muttered.

The simple-minded person didn't grasp my words and just smiled foolishly at me.

Everyone in the village knew the truth about Ian. He had developmental delays: he couldn't walk until he was three years old, didn't speak until he was six, and only learned to feed himself the previous year.

The reporter, confused, asked, "So why didn't you send Ian to study in a big city earlier? There are far better educational resources there."

The village leader coughed, signaling my dad, who immediately took on a somber tone. "We don't have many resources here. Once the kids are old enough, they need to help out at home. There's not much time for studying."

The reporter wasn't satisfied and pressed further, "A couple of years ago, didn't you plan to build a road? With a proper cement road, the kids could go out to study, and it would be more convenient for everyone. Why hasn't there been any progress?"

I knew the answer to that. A couple of years ago, there had indeed been plans to build a road. The county had even allocated funds. But on the day before construction was to begin, there was a massive argument between my father and the village leader.

My father, who had always been respectful to the village leader, shocked everyone by grabbing him by the collar and saying, "If the road is built and people discover this secret, your grandson Ian won't be able to take the college entrance exam in two years."

All these measures were to prevent others from discovering my mother's existence.

My mother was the most unique person in the village. She was a "silkworm woman" who could produce magical silk.

For as long as I could remember, my mother had lived in the cellar like a silkworm, needing to eat fresh mulberry leaves every day. By spring, she would produce a batch of silk, which my father would make into clothes and sell.

Those clothes had an amazing effect: they made the wearer incredibly smart.

Moreover, the clothes my mother produced each year were progressively more effective. This year, the clothes had transformed simple-minded Ian into the state's top scorer.

Faced with the reporter's persistent questioning, my dad carefully replied, "Our village kids have always been known for their hard work and resilience. Building a road would spoil them."

Though this answer seemed dubious, the reporter didn't probe further and instead asked about Ian's whereabouts. "Why isn't the top scorer at home today?"

The village leader vaguely responded that Ian had gone to the neighboring village to visit his grandparents, attempting to dismiss the reporter.

I couldn't help but chuckle. They crafted stories so easily. Ian didn't have any grandparents; he only had a mother who had been living in a tragically abusive situation. His father had beaten her to death a few years ago and had later died in a fall.

The reporter remained insistent. "Last year, we didn't get to meet the county's top scorer, and this year it's the state's top scorer. We must meet him this time!"

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."

The last thing I remembered from my first life was the fire. It wasn't a quick death. Mark wanted me to suffer, watching the flames eat my skin. I didn't give him the satisfaction. My final act was defiance, shattering a framed photo of Ashley Greene, the woman who destroyed my life. His roar of fury was the last thing I heard before darkness. Then, nothing. Until I woke up, in a luxurious armchair, the heavy satin of a wedding dress clinging to my unblemished skin. A mirror showed me Sarah Miller, on my wedding day, about to marry Mark Johnson, the man who would one day burn me alive. Memories of his torment and humiliation crashed into me, not a nightmare, but a dress rehearsal. His abuse started long before the fire, isolating me, dismantling my family's business, and forcing me to beg for repentance at Ashley' s corporate shrine. A soft knock interrupted the horrifying clarity. "Sarah? Are you ready? The car is waiting downstairs." It was Emily, my assistant, the snake who fed Ashley information. This time, my face was a mask of calm. "I'll be down in a minute, Emily." I walked to the window, overlooking the city, and saw her. Ashley Greene, in an identical wedding dress, already slipping into Mark' s penthouse. This was the moment it all began. In my past life, I ignored the doubt. This time, I felt nothing but cold certainty. My phone buzzed. "Sarah? Everyone is getting worried. Mark is waiting." I looked at my reflection. No longer a naive bride, but a ghost with a second chance. I didn't go downstairs. I didn't rush to confront them. Why stop the show when I already knew how it ended? This time, I wanted revenge. I walked toward the emergency exit, away from my old life, for good.

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."

HONEY MULLINS

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I've returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders-the man I was told was a crippled recluse-intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I'd cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent-the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower's security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy-Archibald's secret son-wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald's face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."
