Revenge of the Betrayed Husband Chapter 1 The Anniversary

"I guess I'll see you later bro..." Anthony waved at Atlas as he exited the building of the factory he worked in.

"Yeah, later man." Atlas waved back at his colleague and friend without looking at him. After the day's work he was too exhausted to move anywhere but straight ahead.

Atlas lets out a sigh of relief as soon as the outside breeze enveloped him, glad that he was finally away from all that toxic chemical in the factory.

The only good thing about work these days was when Atlas got to go back home to his wife and sleep. Usually he would be on his way to his second job where he worked as a waste carrier by now but it was his day off and as much as he had pleaded with his boss to let him take up extra shifts today, he had vehemently refused, saying that he was taking too much space here and that he wasn't the only one that needed money.

It would have been funny if it wasn't completely true. Atlas was in fact always there, picking up extra shifts every chance he got. It wasn't exactly because he loved his job so much, after all, his job was to pack and dump waste, it was because he needed the money even though the pay was piss poor. He'd even gotten himself a nickname, Shift sniffer, because of how eager he was to take up extra shifts.

He was doing all of this work for one reason and it was Jessica, his wife.

Atlas walked along the sidewalk, his hands in the pocket of his worn out jeans and his eyes trained straight ahead. He couldn't wait to get home and crash. He had not gotten much sleep throughout the week. Hell, he had not gotten much sleep in years and it had begun to take a toll on his body albeit slowly.

As he continued down the busy sidewalk of Preston, his thoughts focused on getting home and falling into the arms of his wife, his phone buzzed loudly in his pocket.

Without hesitation, Atlas plucked out the buzzing phone from his pocket to check who was calling only to find out that it was simply his alarm. He'd apparently set a reminder for something he couldn't remember.

Confused as to what he had set a reminder for, he typed out his pin, opening his phone.

Atlas stopped abruptly in his tracks as soon as he saw the words ANNIVERSARY! Written in bold letters onr his screen.

"Oh shit!" He cursed, his eyes widening in shock and distress still staring at his screen.

"Don't just stop in the middle of the road like that, you don't own it, you know." an annoyed voice snapped as the owner ambled past him.

"Move out of the way!" Another voice said, ambling past tge still shocked Atlas.

"Sorry." Atlas said absent-mindedly without so much as glancing up at the stranger who had almost bumped into him. He was more concerned about the crisis in his hands.

Shit! Shit! He cursed again as he stepped to the side of the walkway. He'd forgotten about his wedding anniversary!

He ran his hands through his brown moppy hair, as he began to race frantically.

Jessica, his wife, was going to kill him.

No wonder she hasn't texted all day. She had expected him to do the texting and the way she'd spoken to him on his way to work had been off and had sounded rad bitter. He hadn't wished her a happy anniversary.

A feeling of panic came over him and without thinking he began to type out an apology to his wife, hoping to mend the situation before it got out of hand.

Abruptly, he stopped typing as an idea popped up in his head.

He could apologize now and make his wife think he'd actually forgotten about their anniversary and never hear the end of it or surprise her with flowers and chocolate and maybe wine.

It would definitely beat apologizing and admitting he completely forgot about their precious day.

But even as the idea came, the realization that he didn't even have enough money to get these things for her caused his shoulders to slump like a fish that had just been taken out of water.

He could only afford to get her a single rose or at best the cheapest bouquet there was which would still look piss poor.

Atlas ran his hands through hair again, almost pulling the strands out as an overwhelming need to yell out in frustration hit him. How could he have forgotten about a precious day like today and how come his alarm clock had not buzzed earlier?!

He hated that he couldn't afford basic things such as chocolate for his wife.

No! He couldn't go home empty handed, not after forgetting to text her all day. He knew she would completely understand but he was beginning to tire of putting her in a position to always understand. He hated that for her.

Atlas and Jessica have been together since highschool. She was the popular homecoming queen that every guy wanted to be with and he was the nerdy, poor, quiet kid that was constantly bullied for being poor.

How they had gotten together when they were worlds apart still surprised him till this day.

It had been an unsual meeting but there was no denying that day had been the best day of his life.

It had been on a rainy day when they had first interacted. He had just been beaten up by the quarterback of the football team because he had forgotten to do his assignment.

In his defense, he had fallen asleep after a long shift at the factory and had forgotten to finish his work.

He had been walking under the rain with a bloody nose and shirt back home when he noticed Jessica parked just outside his house with the hood of a car open and a disgruntled look on her face.

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ "I want to get a divorce, Mark," I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time-even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran’s "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father’s multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city’s most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins—the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street—and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.
