Chapter 1 Prologue

Alexis sighed heavily as one of the drunken men held her down. She turned to him, ready to slam his face with her purse or maybe her fist. Whichever one worked faster.

'Going so fast?'' he asked in a slur, his breath smelling like rotten fruits mixed with herbs.

'I'm not here to keep you company,' She gritted out.

'I want to take you home with me,' he purred, his eyes mischievous. It made his hideous looking face look even more hideous.

Trying not to gag, she forced a straight face and laughed. 'You can't even afford me.''

The man laughed and dug his hand into his pocket to withdraw his credit card. He waved it in her face. Alexis knew this man wasn't joking. Whipping her head, she looked around the club, wondering where Haven went. He said he had to pee and he's been gone for five minutes.

She turned back to the man. "Get your hands off me," she said, her stomach churning.

''I know you wanted me over. You've been eyeing me since you came in.'' The man snickered. ''Lucky you. Girls like you are just my type.''

She tried to pull her hand but his grip on her wrist tightened. He placed his hand on her hair, stroking the strands almost crazily. Then he leaned forward, breathing heavily on her neck. ''You smell so nice.''

"Let go while I'm being nice," she warned.

''You're such a tease.''

She should have known what would happen if she came to a place like this. It was all Haven's fault, leaving her behind and now she had to deal with this harassment from a creepy man. Just when she was thinking of flipping him over, she felt a hand on her ass, grabbing it roughly.

She felt blood rush to her face and without thinking brought her fist up, slamming it straight into the pervert's jaw. He let her go, stumbling across the dance hall. For a moment, she felt herself wobble forward but then a pair of hands clamped on her shoulder, holding her down. When she turned around, it was Haven.

''You bitch!'' The man was up, ready to pounce on her.

Haven raised a brow at the man, making him halt. "One more step and I will break your legs," he said in a cold tone.

The man gulped, visibly sweating. Alexis glanced at Haven. The pervert in front of them was two times Haven's weight and yet he stood still like a rabbit facing a tiger. It made her wonder if Haven was part of some dangerous gang she didn't know about.

''It's her fault!'' he yelled.

'Oh please.' Alexis scoffed, rolling her eyes. ''You came to me.''

'I don't care whose fault it is.'' Haven stepped closer to him. 'But if you lay your hands on my wife again-' he didn't have to complete his words. The man got the memo and ran off without another word.

As Alexis watched him, she felt Haven step beside her. He looked at her for a second before walking away. She fought back a smile, wondering why she felt this happy hearing him call her 'his wife.'

Well, she was his wife.

His fake wife to be exact.

And their story began exactly a month ago.

Nicole had entered marriage with Walter, a man who never returned her feelings, bound to him through an arrangement made by their families rather than by choice. Even so, she had held onto the quiet belief that time might soften his heart and that one day he would learn to love her. However, that day never came. After two years of a cold and distant marriage, Walter demanded a divorce, delivering his decision in the most degrading manner he could manage. Stripped of her dignity and exhausted by the humiliation, Nicole agreed to her friend Brenda's plan to make him see what he had lost. The idea was simple but daring. She would use another man to prove that the woman Walter had mocked and insulted could still be desired by someone else. All they had to do was hire a gigolo. Patrick had endured one romantic disappointment after another. Every woman he had been involved with had been drawn not to him, but to his wealth. She made an unconventional proposal, one that immediately caught his interest and proved impossible for him to refuse.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
