Love By Contract Chapter 1 Dark wedding

"Find him and bring him here at once!!!". Roni thundered to the men in black standing around him, and they scurried away like little squirrels.

I too, flinched at the sound of his voice and raised my head up a little; and stole a glance at him and my blood ran cold suddenly; I couldn't recognize him anymore.

Roni, my father-in-law, just didn't look like the helpless handsome old man I saw a day ago; I had never seen this version of him.

I looked around, and wasn't obvious of the numerous pairs of eyes on me. Yes I could see the invisible question marks on their heads, but I too didn't have answers to what is happening.

"Oh my, was she so horrible that she had to be stood up on her wedding day?!".

It was a whisper, but it sounded as loud as a gong; to my ears.

I turned my head in the direction of that whisper. It turned out to be an old woman talking to her friend.

To be honest, I never dreamed of having to be dressed in the most beautiful wedding gown I have ever seen, only to be stood up by my groom. It was not part of my plans, but life has a way of overturning our plans.

"Mr Wilcox, if your son doesn't come any moment from now, I'm afraid; I will have to call off the wedding". The priest was obviously becoming impatient too.

Everybody was.

Roni walked up to the priest, smiling but the look on the priest's face was that of horror.

Something was wrong! I thought.

I peered closely, and looked down at Roni's trousers, and I spotted a gun hanging down. I froze.

Roni wouldn't threaten the priest with a gun. Would he?

I had seen this ruthless mafia be anything. But,, threatening the priest with a gun?

Roni shouldn't even try it!! It wouldn't be right.

But, what has been right since I came into this church?!

If the priest was threatened with a gun, what would be my case if I made a wrong move?!

He probably would blow my brains off!

I shuddered at that thought, remembering when I had agreed to get married to Roni's son.

I looked from left to right, maybe there was a secret door or something; any route of escape, and deep down, I prayed that Brendan doesn't show up.

Maybe I don't need to marry him too. Because he doesn't want to marry me too.

But, one look at Roni told me otherwise.

Roni is the one who called the shots here, and from our earlier conversations, I dare not go back on our agreement.

"Keisha?".

I turned, to find Roni staring at me with a soft expression on his face.

"Do you want to sit? Do you need anything to eat?", He asked me as he examined me.

"No; I am okay. Thank you".i replied politely.

I didn't want to sober up for him because I didn't know what he had up his sleeves for me.

Roni nodded and beckoned to one of his men to come closer to him. I stared at his suit as he whispered an instruction to the man.

Roni's suit was screaming affluence, and I remembered what the internet said about him when I checked him up.

RONI WILCOX: BILLIONAIRE.OWNER OF THE BIGGEST CONGLOMERATE IN THE COUNTRY. RUMOURED TO BE THE LEADER OF THE POWERFUL WILCOX MAFIA GANG.

It's been said that the Wilcox was a mafia family lineage, known to be the most powerful mafia gang. The government couldn't arrest them because they were part of the government too. Hence their prolonged existence.

My thought was suddenly interrupted when I heard commotions.

Roni's men walked in, holding a younger man in between their hands.

"Brendan". I heard Roni say, as he smiled, and clapped his hands like a little child.

I whipped my head around, and my jaw came crashing down to the floor.

Standing in front of me ,though been supported by two men each holding him in one arm, was the most handsome man I had ever seen.

God!!

Were people still allowed to be this good looking?!

He had a coal black hair and a pair of dark brown eyes, 6ft tall and leanly muscled.

Roni's son. And my proposed husband, Brendan.

He looked so handsome.

He must have gotten his looks from his father.

Suddenly, a strong smell of alcohol hit my nose. He reeked of a strong smell of Brandy or whiskey, I couldn't place my hands on which it was.

Wow, he also love his bottles! Now I was getting married into a family of guns and alcohols.

Brendan refused to stand. No matter how the men that was holding him tried, he fell to the floor and everyone gasped. We waited for him to stand but he didn't move a muscle.

"Mr Wilcox, we can't perform this ceremony if your son is not conscious". The priest said, and I saw the fear in his eyes.

"Just a moment". Roni said to the priest and walked up to where Brendan was seated.

"Brendan stand up!". He said in a little raised voice, and with a gritted teeth. But Brendan didn't move.

"Brendan?!!". This time, his voice was louder as he stooped to Brendan's level on the floor.

"I want to get married to Charlotte". Brendan growled.

Roni stood up calmly, and beckoned on the men to force him up. They stood Brendan up with each of his arms on their shoulders.

And then Roni's clenched fist moved so swiftly across Brendan's face.

"AARRRR". Brendan groaned in pains, as he fell to the floor again.

Everyone gasped again in shock.

I too was not an exception; I couldn't just believe it.

Roni had just punched his son in the face.

"Stand up Brendan!!!". But Brendan stood his ground. Then the men carried him up again and Roni made it rain punches on Brendan's face.

There was blood all over Brendan's white shirt, and he was smirking at his father with a blood stained teeth.

I was visibly shaken and had to hold my hands together to prevent it from shaking.

How worst can this get?! I wondered.

Suddenly I saw Brendan glare at me and my heart skipped a beat. He looked at me like a hungry animal would look at his meal.

"Who the fuck are you?!!!". He growled.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.
