Becoming Mrs. Hilton Chapter 1 The Sickness

"Hurry up! Dave," Ivy cried out loud to her brother, who had gone to get water for their mother, Mrs. Smith.

Dave rushed out from the kitchen with a cup of water, stretching it to his mother, " Here mum, I hope it relieves the cough."

Their mother has been really sick and she doesn't seem to be getting any better. They could imagine the pain a single person must be going through trying to stay alive.

"Sorry mum," Ivy said as Mrs. Smith made a louder cough after gulping more water from the cup.

"I hope I can raise enough money by the weekend, at least I will be able to get you more drugs," she added.

Mrs. Smith got a bit of strength to speak for the first time in a while, "Don't worry kids, I'll be fine."

"Doesn't look like you will," Dave murmured.

They felt so much pity for her, it's been over a year of getting drugs and even sorting hospital bills, yet all doesn't seem to be well.

Mrs. Smith's health has greatly worsened. And now, they could no longer afford the bills from the hospital so they had opted to just buy drugs only since they were barely trying to survive.

"Don't say that!" Ivy cautioned her brother.

"Come on Ivy, I really want mum to be healthy. I'm in pain knowing she hasn't been herself for months, knowing we could lose her if we don't take her for a proper surgery and treatment," Dave answered almost in tears, taking a seat close to his mother and patting her.

A louder hack came this time around, it was continuous and felt like it wasn't ending anytime soon as Mrs. Smith held her chest in pain.

With worry, Ivy let out, "I think I'll have to use the little cash with me and see what I can get at the pharmacy, I had thought I could wait till the weekend and get more money to add as soon as I get my wage for the week."

Making her way out, rushing toward the door, Dave stood up too. "Please let me come with you," he said.

"No Dave, you need to stay here with mum. At this point, we can't leave her all by herself," Ivy insisted.

"I know, but... or just let me go instead, I'll rush down as fast as I can and I don't think you have that much strength, you were with her all day and probably haven't rested," he persuaded.

Mrs. Smith, who was persistently coughing, tried to speak. Although, it was low, like a person on their deathbed, "You both can go, I'll be fine."

They rushed to the nearest pharmacy where they were only able to get just one tablet of drug. Obviously what they could afford with the money they had at the moment.

"Please, can you help us with some other drugs to hasten her recovery, the cough has really been too much lately," Dave begged the pharmacist.

"Y-Yes Ma'am, I will pay you the balance by weekend, Please," Ivy added tearfully.

" I really wish I could, but I can't, I'm so sorry" the pharmacist, who was only an attendant in the store replied.

With no delay they headed home while they had all their mind and thoughts on their mum.

"Gbaamm!!!" the sound of a loud thud surfaced on the busy road.

"No! Daveee!!!" Ivy cried out as she watched her brother struggle for his life on the ground, while people already gathered at the scene.

"These kids, you shouldn't cross the road without watching properly," the drunk driver spoke out, as he smelled of alcohol and some sort of rich wine.

"R-Really?" Ivy said rushing at him, but later turn back to her brother who was moaning in pains, as he was bleeding profusely.

"He wasn't watching, so relax girl. Not everything that happened is my fault; if you had both been paying attention to where you were going, this could have been averted, and I wouldn't be in such a mess," the man spoke, rolling up his sleeves as he was sweating amidst the chaos.

"Okay, I'll give you some money, take him to the hospital," he offered rudely.

"Why not drive us to the hospital, please. My brother is in dying need of help, he is bleeding," Ivy cried, trying to support Dave off the road where he laid.

"Look girl, I don't have such time, you can see I was heading somewhere. I'm just trying to be kind here and help, but I guess you don't want it," he said blatantly, then went back to his car and zoomed off.

Some of the kind observers came to assist her as she took her brother to the nearby clinic but it felt like the day was already cursed for Ivy.

"We lost him, he already lost so much blood before he was brought here Ma'am," the doctor announced.

It was a shock, a big cut in the heart to Ivy, "What do you mean by that? Where is my brother?" she yelled as she tried to gain her balance on the floor in the hospital.

How was she going to break such news to her parents, especially her mother, who was almost dying when they left home that evening

"I'm so sorry, we tried all we could but I guess it was too late," the doctor said.

She couldn't do anything as she sat there shedding hot tears with no one to console her. Her legs were rather too heavy to walk home. She wished she had been able to save him.

She could not get the gruesome sight off her head; her beloved brother, her only sibling, died right in front of her eyes, it was one of the worst nights in her life.

A knock came at the door which brought Ivy back to her reality, as she was carried away still unconsciously mourning her brother even after months of his death.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

I lived as the "scarred ghost" of the Stephens penthouse, a wife kept in the shadows because my facial burns offended my billionaire husband’s aesthetic. For years, I endured Kason’s coldness and my family's abuse, a submissive puppet who believed she had nowhere else to go. The end came with a blue folder tossed onto my silk sheets. Kason’s mistress was back, and he wanted me out by sunset, offering a five-million-dollar "silence fee" to go hide my face in the countryside. The betrayal cut deep when I discovered my father had already traded my divorce for a corporate bailout. My step-sister mocked my "trashy" appearance at a high-end boutique, while the sales staff treated me like a common thief. At home, my father threatened to cut off my mother's life-saving medicine unless I crawled back to Kason to beg for a better deal. I was the girl who took the blame for a fire she didn't start, the wife who worshipped a man who never looked her in the eye, and the daughter used as a human bargaining chip. I was supposed to be broken, penniless, and desperate. But the woman who stood up wasn't the weak Elease Finch anymore; she was Phoenix, a tactical predator with a $500 million secret. I signed the divorce papers without a single tear, walked past my stunned husband, and wiped the Finch family's bank accounts clean with a few taps on my phone. "Your money is dirty," I told Kason with a cold smile. "I prefer clean hands." The cage is open, the hunt has begun, and I’m starting with the people who thought a scar made me weak.

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."
