Chapter 1 The CEO's Dilemma
Alex pov
The sun was beginning to set when I looked out of the window in my office, watching the beautiful city skyline views below. And the sun was making a magnificent glow over the towering skyscrapers.
Looking at my image on the billboard next to XGAL company. ' That's a view that most people would envy to see me the CEO of XGAL used as the model for his company' I thought.
Despite the wealth, power, and prestige, I couldn't shake off the feelings of emptiness gnawing inside of me. I had worked tirelessly even when my father was still running the company to climb the corporate ladder, sacrificing countless hours and personal relationships along the way.
For all my achievements, there seems to be something missing in my life but a void that no amount of wealth or success could fill.
As I turned away from the window, my gaze fell on Maya Bennett, my quiet and dedicated secretary, who was busy at her desk, as her fingers flew across the keyboard with utmost seriousness and concentration.
Maya has been employed as my secretary for three years now and her calm efficiency has been a comforting anchor in the storm of my busy and exhausting schedule.
But recently, I had begun to notice something off and different about Maya, or is it the dress she wore or her makeup and I couldn't comprehend the feelings that seemed to elude me.
She moved with confidence and grace, which I found so captivating and elusive.
Lost in thought, I barely noticed when Maya approached my desk with a stack of papers in her hand. " Mr. Sinclair, I have compiled the latest financial reports for your review," she said in a soft voice.
"Thank you, Maya" I replied, tearing my gaze away from her to read the documents she had placed on my table. But as I was about to go through the numbers and figures on the document, my mind went back to the dissatisfaction that plagued me.
"Are you okay, sir?" Maya asked, her brow furrowing with concern as she noticed the frown on Alex's face.
I hesitated a little bit, unsure of how to express the turmoil that was within me. But with a sigh, I decided to confide in her.
" I don't know Maya" I admitted, my voice tinged with vulnerability. " I have achieved a lot in my career, but sometimes I can't help but wonder if it is worth it.
" Success means different things to different people, sir," she said gently. "But in my opinion, I would advise you to take some time to yourself because it's time to explore what truly brings you fulfillment, beyond the confines of the boardroom"
I felt something stir within me, and a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe there was more to life than endless meeting and bottom lines.
And as I looked up I met Maya's eyes and I found myself inexplicably drawn to her as if she held the key to unlock the secrets of my heart.
But before I could dwell on my newfound feelings, a sudden knock at the door, interrupted Maya and my conversation. It was Ethan, my trusted friend and confidant, his expression seemed grave as he entered the room.
"Alex, we need to talk," Ethan said urgently. "There is some information going around the company and it seems urgent".
Curious to know what he meant I turned my attention to Ethan and I could see the seriousness in him.
"Miss Bennett, please excuse us," I said in an authorized voice.
"Yes sir," she said almost immediately and left quietly.
" What do you mean by some information going around the company I don't know of it," I said curiously.
"Well," he said and kept quiet
"What's going on, Ethan?" I asked, my voice betraying me.
Ethan hesitated for a moment, his face getting worried before he finally spoke. "It's about Gabriel Smith," he began, his tone measured. "There have been rumors within the company about his evil intentions towards XGAL."
I felt a surge of anger at the mention of Gabriel's name. Ever since Gabriel and I confrontation, I had been wary of the businessman and his hidden agenda.
"What kind of rumors?" I pressed, my brow furrowing with concern.
Ethan sighed, his gaze steady. "It seems that Gabriel has been acquiring shares of XGAL stock without our knowledge, to gain a lot of interest in the company."
My heart quickened at the revelation, If Gabriel succeeded in gaining control of XGAL, it would be a disaster for everything I and my late father had worked so hard to achieve.
"We need to find out every Gabriel's plans against XGAL," I said, my voice sounding with determination. "We can't afford to let him undermine everything my late father and I built."
Ethan nodded in agreement, "I've started looking into it, but we need to act fast. Gabriel is an enigmatic businessman, and he won't hesitate to use any means of information to achieve his goals."
As we went deeper into the investigation, I remembered my father's late words to me 'I know you would not make my effort be in vain, I trust you, my son, go and make XGAL, the best enterprising company in the country' those were the late words he said to me. I won't let Gabriel succeed in his evil plans.
Lost in thought, I barely listened to what Ethan was explaining to me.
"Alex, Alex is everything alright?" Ethan asked, his voice filled with concern.
I tore my gaze away from the documents spread out on my desk
"Yeah, so Ethan I think we shouldn't take this matter lightly, Gabriel isn't going to sit idly while we gather evidence against him" I replied with a sense of determination.
" We would need to move quickly if we're going to be one step ahead of him," Ethan remarked, his voice tense with apprehension.
I nodded in agreement, my mind assuring me of possibilities. Suddenly, a thought occurred to me, a business opportunity that could not only further the investigation but possibly stop Gabriel from stealing the company's interest.
"We need to take advantage of the upcoming international trade conference that will commence in Paris," I said, my voice filled with excitement. "It's the perfect opportunity to expand our valuable Intel and networks on Gabriel's activities."
Ethan's eyes lit up on hearing the suggestion, recognizing the potential for their plan to succeed. "But we would need to act fast," he cautioned. "Gabriel won't hesitate to sabotage our efforts if he finds out what we're planning."
With a sense of determination, Alex and Ethan set to work, gathering the logistics of their impromptu business trip.
They knew that every moment counted and that they needed to act fast if they were to move ahead of Gabriel's evil scheme.
Maya's pov
Meanwhile, I watched from the sidelines, curious about what they were planning, despite my role as Alex's secretary, I couldn't deny the feeling that there was more to their mission.
Determined to follow my instincts, I approached Alex's desk, my heart pounding hoping I won't say anything that would upset him. "Mr. Sinclair, if you don't mind, I would like to accompany you and Ethan on the trip to Paris," I said, surprised that my voice sounded steady.
He glanced up from his computer, surprise flickering in his eyes. "Maya, I'm not sure if that's necessary," he began, but I immediately interrupted him before he could finish.
"I understand, sir, but I have a feeling that my presence could be useful " she explained, her voice almost sounding with determination. "Besides, I've always wanted to visit the love city (Paris)"
Alex studied my face for a moment, his gaze searching my face as if looking for a sentence in a book which almost made me nervous, and thank God he immediately turned away from me.
"Alright," he said finally. "Book our plane to Paris, we have to get there before the sun rises.
With excitement I booked our plane to Paris, Wondering what was next. But amidst the uneasiness of our journey, a sense of happiness filled my heart.
