Chapter 1 Mia's World

Mia observes the vibrant city below from the window of her rooftop apartment, with the gentle glow of the evening lights illuminating the cityscape in a warm tone. Savouring a rare moment of tranquilly amidst the bustle of her hectic life, she takes a sip of her wine and lets the delicious flavours dance on her palate. The room is filled with the monotonous sound of her heels pounding on the wooden floor, serving as a continual reminder of her never-ending efforts and unwavering quest for achievement.

Tonight, though, is different. Mia gives herself permission to enjoy the luxury of silence and reflection tonight. She's at a crossroads tonight, drawn as she is between the attraction of the unknown and the comfort of familiarity.

Her phone vibrates with a message as she stands lost in contemplation, jolting her back to reality. It's from Sarah, her closest friend, asking her to spend a night out. Mia is hesitant because she can't decide between the adventure that lies beyond her door and the seclusion of her apartment.

Mia considers her options for a moment before accepting her friend's invitation. She is ready for a change of pace and an opportunity to get out of her head.

Mia and Sarah are tucked away in a comfortable corner booth in the softly lit lounge of a hip downtown pub, catching up on each other's lives with the gentle glow of candles casting shadows over their features.

"So, please spill it," Sarah replies, her mischievous eyes sparkling. "What's been going on in the world of Mia?"

Knowing that Sarah always manages to sift through the chatter and get right to the point, Mia smiles. "Oh, you know, the usual," she says as she takes a drink of her mixed drink. "Work, meetings, more work."

Sarah shows her scepticism by raising an eyebrow. "Come on, Mia, there's got to be more to life than spreadsheets and board meetings."

Realising that Sarah is correct, Mia sighs. She's been feeling stuck in a never-ending loop of productivity lately, with her days merging into a fog of deadlines and responsibilities. However, there's a restlessness bubbling beneath the surface-a yearning for something more, something she's not quite sure how to describe.

Before she can reply, excitement lights up Sarah's eyes as she points to the bar's door. Her tone is amused as she exclaims, "Well, well, well, would you look at that." "It looks like tonight just got a whole lot more interesting."

Mia follows Sarah's gaze and spots him, the man who would shortly set off the most significant turning point in her life. Amidst the crowd of partygoers, he stands alone at the bar, his dark eyes sweeping the space with a subdued intensity that makes Mia shudder.

As their eyes lock, there's an invisible awareness that sends a shockwave through her veins, a comprehension of something fundamental and unfathomable that transcends words.

As Mia observes him from the other side of the room, she realises that her life is about to take unexpected turns.

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ "I want to get a divorce, Mark," I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time-even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.
