Chapter 1 .

There she was, dressed in a white Empire Waist Peach gown with a touch of Black designs. That definitely isn't a wedding dress. Who cares about a wedding dress when she's not even interested in the marriage. She looked at herself for the fifth time in the mirror and sighed.

In the books she always read, a wedding is always a grand one. The Female character will dress in a Wedding gown and she always want hers to be a mermaid Tail gown with a very long veil that sweeps the floor as she walks.

But Just to make her life a bitter one, Step Mum want to marry her off to one dude who isn't close to her Desire in a man.

" Awn... my baby girl is getting married" she turned her head swiftly to see her step Mum smiling like she cares. " Adriana, aren't you Just a pretty girl?" She ran her hand across her face that has no make-up on it.

" But Step Mum, I don't want to..." She frowned her face, Making her stopped what she wanted to say.

" Adriana, this is for your own Good. There's nothing you do around the house. You just sit in one place, Reading those scribbles you call Stories. They won't help you at all and worse, people would point fingers at me for your laziness" She sighed.

" But Step Mum, You don't..." She interrupted her again. " Adriana, do not say a word again. You will Like Him when you see him."

That is what she has been going through for a week now since Step Mum brought the topic of her getting married. She doesn't let hee say anything. She's not even ready for marriage right now.

And what she called a wedding dress isn't anything close to a wedding dress. Who would wear an Empire Waist gown for her wedding? God!

" Mum?" Step Mum turned around. " He's here" Said her Step sister. No one has to tell her who she was referring to, Adriana knew that was her husband to be whom they had all been waiting for.

" Wonderful!" She Hurried out of the room leaving Adriana and her step sister in the room. To God, she hate the way her step sis looked at her with that disgusting expression.

" Finally, we'll get rid of you" She Smacked her lips. " Annabelle, just leave me alone" she turned her back on her. That girl has been giving her countless heart aches since the day her Mum fixed Adrian's wedding.

She would Tease her, Mock her and insult her. But for peace, Adriana ignored her. Her Mum won't take it slightly with her if she find out she's fighting with her Daughter. Moments later, she return back to the room.

" Adriana, come quick. He's here" her heart started to beat Fast after step Mum said that. She Inhaled deeply before stepping out of the room on her flat sandal.

And there he was, sitting on the couch facing the Stairs. Her heart skipped a beat, he's so handsome but he isn't what she wanted. She just have to do that to avoid step Mum's troubles.

That woman already doesn't like her and she'll do whatever she has to just to see that Adriana was out of the house. With an expressionless face, she stepped down the last stair.

" The marriage certificate is already here, we don't have to go to the court" Said her step Mum. Adriana turned to her left and saw a Man in his mid forties, wearing a black suit. He should be the Lawyer, if she wasn't not mistaken.

" Come sit here, Adriana." Step Mum Holds her left arm and Made her sit on the couch facing the dude. He was busy on his phone, without even taking a look at the woman he was going to Marry.

" What a rude jerk" she Mumbled. Step Mum heard what she said and she gave her a warning look. She lowered her head and gripped her teeth. If only her Dad was around, that wouldn't have been happening. But he choose to abandon his Child with his wife who was looking for a way to send her off.

" Mr. Harold has signed the Certificate. It's your turn now, Miss Adriana" The Man in suit passed the certificate which was on the table to her. Adriana looked at Step Mum before taking it from him.

" And here's a pen" she took the pen from him then looked at Harold before being forced to sign it by step Mum. " Wonderful!" She clapped her palms together.

Still, Harold didn't lift his head. He continued doing Only God knows what. Step Mum collected the Certificate from her hand and gave it back to the lawyer.

" What next?" She asked him. " I think that's all, unless Mr. Harold has something to say" Harold lifted up his head, looked at the lawyer and then stood on his feet.

" I think it's time to go" Said the lawyer. That surprised her, Harold didn't say a word ever since she stepped inside the living room. He didn't even care to look at her. Was step Mum trying to marry her off to a person who was dead and dumb?

" Adriana" She brought her back to the reality. " Time to go" She said. " Time to go where?" she looked in front of her to see him already exiting the room. " To your husband's" She Frowned her face.

" But step Mum, I can't leave without my Dad knowing. Please let me stay here for some time until he returns" I pleaded with her but that made her Angry.

" Your Dad already knows about the marriage and he gave his full support. Now leave, Your husband is waiting outside" She stood up from the couch and pointed at the door.

" Step Mum..." Annabelle started laughing at her.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancƩe hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
